Then look for bargains with good positioning, concentration, anticipation and tackling. One good thing to also do is look for DM's and FB's with good jumping and convert them (they tend to be better all-around players).
I won the Premier League with 3 CB formations, and 3 of my 6 starters were free or thereabouts.

I bought a dm to cover the position until my youth prospects grew up, and now he wants to go home to France (I'm managing in Germany).
I offered him to every team in Ligue 1 for free with me paying his current salary for the duration of the contract. No one was even interested. He's still decent, not world class but definitely good enough for a midtable Ligue 1 team for another year or two.
So now I'm just letting him live in France until his contract expires. Have no real need for him, my second batch of dm youngsters are now going on 18 and can play backup if they need to. He did his job well and even won a champions league with us, so I have no complaints paying him until he retires at the end of this contract. He's only on £40k p/w (3% of my wage bill) so it's not even that big of a cash sink.
