He's insecure in a weird way, where he doesn't feel that he's good enough so he has to prove how good he is at all times. I have a friend with the same kind of weird insecurity. Doesn't matter though, like I said most athletes are super full of themselves and they may just not say it all the time. Messi is the rare exception because he is a genuine autist, but almost every great major American athlete is huge egomaniac. Tom Brady, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, are all narcissists on par with Ronaldo, they just aren't as insecure and attention seeking about it.
