In overtime the coin flip basically determines who gets the ball first. If you score a touchdown on that first possession, you win. If you make a field goal, the other team gets a chance to tie with a field goal or win with a touchdown. If they tie, it basically starts over. If they cant score its game over

In the NHL, it's a best of 7 series. A game will go until one team is a definite winner. When it goes to overtime the first team to score wins.
