There was a documentary on Mayfield released about a year ago.
He had a prescription for Adderall because of ADHD. Now there is a huge difference between not being able to sit still in high school, and actually being diagnosed for ADHD. As an adult, it's crippling - you literally can't get shit done. You need meds to function like a normal human being.
He informed NASCAR and everything about the prescription, but at the time they wanted to push how great their new "Road to Recovery" system worked. Piss tested him, amphetamines obviously came up. He refused to be their poster boy for the program because he had the prescriptions to prove it. NASCAR proceeded to claim he was a drug addict. Independent researchers looked at the case and said "there's no way a meth addict was a stock car driver." NASCAR didn't care and basically ignored their stories in favor of MAYFIELD MAY POSSIBLY BE A METH ADDICT. I've got their rule book right beside me, and they get autistic about the most obscure shit. They can send you home for having a sponsor they don't approve of.
All of the charges/thefts, as well as his step mom calling him a chronic user etc, were used as a smear campaign and thrown out when they finally got to court.

They realized that to pump out a game every year they can't make a game too good or else people won't be bothered to pay a $60 yearly fee for a roster update.
