Yeah, I'm extremely underwhelmed by how RPMs play from a CM position this year. I quite like them though when they start from deeper positions. It seems like they changed the purpose of the role - in FM15 it was a very vertical, mobile playmaker on drugs, and now it just seems to be a mobile DLP. Their roaming is mostly horizontal now, they don't really attack the oppositions third at all.
They are great from a DM position because they're pretty attacking for a DM, push up quite a bit and help your team out a lot to get the ball forward. I need another role next to my CMa though that will readily enter the box if the striker drops back and there is , I need more threats through midfield in my 4-1-4-1.
I have to admit that I never liked advanced playmakers in central midfield, they never worked for me so I never tested them for a longer period. Do they attack the opposition's box off the ball, do they make runs?
I know for a fact that BBMs do, and I think BBMs could give me some balance in midfield because they are generally more defensive minded than other roles that provide what I'm looking for, and I don't want to have 3 very attacking players. I wouldn't like the fact though that I'd only have one playmaker left.

this is not FM15 anymore, please don't do this. The easiest way to concede goals (and the way to concede the most goals) is to sit deep and allow your opponents to get the ball to the wings.
You will concede a few stupid goals with a high line because the opponent's striker will be able to walk through your defense, but it will be much less than with a deeper line. FM16 is all about crossing. Go slightly higher
PS: Try lower tempo. This gives your attackers the time to make runs before your player plays the pass, otherwise they release the ball too soon and you can't really get a counter attack going.

That's why I had the best GD and one of the best defences in the league with a wage budget of 500k per month, or to put it another way, almost half that of the second lowest wage budget in the league
If you sit high, enjoy those balls over the top which your slow CB's will never catch.

Strange, maybe its a DC/Keeper thing then. I couldnt defend crosses in any of my teams in FM16 and I realized that a higher line was better for my teams, even though I had slow DCs.

High lines will stop the constant cross goals but they also make it fucking impossible to score anything but a cross
