I truly don't know why Alfa Romeo would buy Sauber or any team in general, other than for marketing purposes. I'm just going by the rumors that have been going around regarding the Afla takeover.
Ferrari doesn't need a junior team in F1 as they can get just about anyone anyway, and rarely get inexperienced drivers. I think Massa was basically the only really unproven driver that they have hired in the last 15 years. But even then I don't really remember Massas pre-Ferrari career and how he was rated back then. Ferrari also have something of a "junior" team in Haas and perhaps even in Sauber (Bianchi was promised a seat at Sauber for 2015 as a stepping stone towards an eventual Ferrari seat, I don't know if this was actually true but Ferrari said so and it suggests that this link exists)
Point being that there's no need for a Ferrari junior team as all their drivers are generally successful elsewhere first before moving over to Ferrari.

There's a couple reasons, even though I'm not completely opposed to the idea. It's not like I'm going to stop watching F1 if they implement it.
1) I don't like how it looks, which does matter, despite what people might say
2) It obscures our ability to see the driver, which is a big part of what makes F1 great; being able to see the man within the machine
3) This is a contentious point yet to be proven but it is likely any sort of halo/windscreen may impair a driver's ability to get out of an overturned car (it certainly would be in a closed cockpit)
4) It just seems unnecessary. The pitched ideas wouldn't have saved Jules nor, given the size of the piece that hit him, Massa. In F1 we have never had an incident of flying debris seriously injure a driver (apart from Hungary '09)
5) It's just not F1. F1 cars are open wheel, open cockpit. People like to shit on that sentiment with "yeah well, drivers dying every other race used to be F1" and "the crash structure used to be the driver" type statements as if it's a comparable situation but it's not. F1 already lost a large part of it's character meaninglessly two years ago with the switch in engine regulations. It doesn't need closed cockpits to happen as well.

3)A closed cockpit hasn't hurt extraction or fire safety with le mans prototypes, which recently have similar internal cockpit design to f1
4)Hard to argue, but how do we or you know this wouldn't have helped massa? The only thing that would have helped jules of course is to have better regulations regarding yellows and on track equipment, one of the very few areas which F1 seems to be stuck in dark ages
5) not sure what this point is aiming at, the sport has evolved several times over against the wishes of ""purists"". at least for me personally, it is those evolutions and advances that kept me interested in the sport early on. Like you say, F1 has lost character recently and it is no coincidence that came alongside regulations that have effectively banned innovation. I don't know how much an innovation a windscreen or closed cockpit is, but why not open the area up to development
These are just rcounterpoints that popped into my head , so far the proposed ideas seem worthless wastes of PR time. The real test will be when they fully design a chassis around it. I'm sure people like Newey have dreamed of the aero gains a closed cockpit could bring.
