To be fair I don't watch the NBCsports version of my team playing, I'm going to watch my local feed. Plus NBCsports has to compete with CBC airing the games so that cuts probably over half the viewers as well.

Hockey, although it requires an incredible amount of skill, isn't very dynamic.

It's literally just dump the puck in the corner. Scrum on the boards. Kick out to Dman. Go D to D. Shoot through traffic and look for rebound.

This is how it plays out 99% of the time.

Power plays aren't very interesting either since one side is solely committed to defending.

If they played 3v3 like they decided to in regular season OT, you might actually have fans.

As it stands right now, it's an extremely crude game.
>>
>>66934861
I really don't understand why Americans dont like hockey. Its fast paced, physical, and fighting doesnt warrant an ejection. Seems like the kind of thing Americans would enjoy, but I guess the whole ice thing throws off 60% of the country.
>>
>>66934861

This only proves that our country is full of niggers.
>>
>>66935372
Probably like 35 of our 50 states don't see snow and if they get a half an inch they cancel school.
And as much as it pains me >60% white

Not to mention ESPN didn't air it so casuals become unaware.
Whatever though, I don't mind hockey being niche since it keeps casual scum from ruining the sport

Because the game is played from the perspective of the athletes on the field. Nba2k's 2k camera angle is the same.

The tv angle is for the casuals who dont see whats really occuring on the field(ie why real football fans pay for the coaches' tape on nfl.com)
>>

The lockout completely destroyed the general fanbase largely because ESPN lost all rights afterwards and Versus (now NBCSN) was just starting up. It was never a major sport, but it got relegated to less coverage than even shit tier sports like Golf and NASCAR.

That does happen quite a bit, but that's not what happens 99% of the time. And you could break any sport down like that if you wanted to. There's plays off cycles and people carrying the puck in on oddman rushes or if the d-man pivots early (for example) which also happens quite a bit.

It kind of sucks that hockey isn't nearly as good on tv as it is live. I also think cameramen follow the guy with the puck too much, it should be a wider angle and mostly stationary, there's so much more that goes on that gets missed on tv

>>
>>66935732
Bro, I love hockey but I think it needs to be "updated". The incredible skating skill (and speed it gives the game) is what sets hockey apart. Unfortunately, today's game doesn't allow for it to truly shine. Offenses are too stagnated and can rarely even gain smooth entry into the opponent's zone. The players are too big now and everything seems so clogged up.

Go to Olympic ice or play 4v4 and the ratings would go up imo.
>>
>>66935827

>>

Americans will typically watch sports they grew up playing, either casually or in leagues/highschool/college.

I was into hockey at the height of the Lemieux, Gretzky era, when every kid seemed to own NHL 94, and Mighty Ducks was like the most popular kids sports franchise.

I even bought some street hockey gear, but my interest quickly faded, since playing hockey in the driveway grew old pretty fast. Furthermore, I'm from SoCal, so I can't just walk down to the local frozen pond and get a close to authentic experience.

Compare this to basketball, baseball, football, or even (god forbid) soccer. To get a pickup going with friends in these games, all you need is a ball, hoop, couple of bats (don't always need gloves for baseball, since you can play with a tennis ball), and a field.

Hockey requires each kid to have their own stick, skates, know how to skate (yeah, you can play on foot, but it's pretty lame), and if you want something like the real thing, ice.

It's not that Americans don't like hockey. There's just not a lot of states that have the necessarily climate that allows kids to connect with the game early on. Yeah, you can sign up for league or something, but most kids connect with their favorites sports by playing them with friends at school, in the yard, etc.
>>
>>66935837

First they came for the NHL, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a NHL fan.

Then they came for the MLB, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a MLB fan.

Then they came for the NBA, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a NBA fan.

Then they came for the NFL—and there was no sports left to keep it out.

The thing is every second of action in football is exciting and worth paying attention to. Compare this to furpuck and divegrass where it's mundane puck cycling and back passing 95% of the time, and you will easily see why so many people prefer football. At least when the ads come on we know we can stop paying attention, grab a beer, etc. but with hockey you're literally sitting there watching boring shit waiting for something to happen. You can't even stop watching the boring stuff because then you could miss something exciting.
>>
>>66936026

Wrong:

Football: Can be played in a variety of climates, on a variety of terrains.
Basketball: See above
Baseball: See above
Soccer: See above
Ice Hockey: Needs ice.

>Roller hockey

Indeed an alternative, but it still requires more necessary conditions to play relatively properly than the other sports.

Golf is the whitest of white sports, and the Masters and other Majors are still big television draws.
>>
I bet you think Keeping Up With The Kardashians is better than True Detective too
>>
>>66935958
If you think hockey ratings are smaller because it doesn't have as much "entertainment value" you're fucking retarded.
It's because decades of TV deals, ESPN domination, bad decisions by hockey commissioners and the fact that only a small portion of the US even has ice.

Nobody turns hockey off because it's "boring," they don't watch it because they grew up watching dunk highlights on ESPN and the sport isn't advertised.
>>
Hockey is a northern sport
Subhuman southerners are too dumb to get it. That's why it's mainly popular in states with high education and income.
>>
>>66936142
to each their own I suppose. I watch football as well, but I don't see anything exciting about a RB running into 10 big men and gaining a yard or losing one. But I get what you mean, it's more controlled entertainment in a way
>>
>>66936108

Yeah. It's why I hate /sp/'s hockey fans. They think the fact that it's a "white sport" is the reason why it isn't popular nationwide.

Never mind the fact that only a few States have the right climate and conditions where kids can just go outside and get a hockey game going.

I'm just debunking that the "white" and "educated" naturally follow hockey.

It has everything to do with what State you grew up in and little to do with race, education level, income level, etc.

As I said before, golf's image is more upper crust than hockey, but it still draws on television, because it's an accessible game to play for most of the country. There's hundreds of golf courses in pretty much every state.

Relax. A game like hockey can never become some kind of global phenomenon. Just too many barriers to entry.

A sports popularity has everything to do with accessibility. It's why the worst sport in the world is the most popular, because it can played anywhere, anytime, using a wadded up piece of newspaper or a goat's head for a ball.

And I like hockey. I want more Americans to watch it. I think it would be a crime if the MLS takes over the 4th sport spot, but it's just a tough sport to get into if you don't live in a frozen wasteland.

>The thing is every second of action in football is exciting and worth paying attention to

No it isn't. I've been a football fan for most of my life but I can't stand it anymore. It's literally

>kickoff
>touchback
>beer commercial

>1st and 10
>run up the middle
>2 yard gain

>2nd and 10
>slant pass
>incomplete

>Remember this game is brought to you by Subway! Subway! Eat Fresh!

>3rd and 10
>deep pass
>incomplete
>flag
>Holding 10 yard penalty
>Repeat 3rd down

>There's a player slow to get up! Let's hope he's ok

>More commercials

>Replay 3rd Down
>deep pass
>incomplete
>reciever bitches for a Pass interference

>Punt
>Fair catch
>more commercials

wash, rinse, repeat and you get 75% of NFL "action" sure there's exciting moments, but it's really not any more than most sports, and it has the most commercials and stoppages by a country mile.

I'm sorry your team is shitty, anon.

Literally every play that happens in football is important. That's the difference.

some autist made this exact same thread twice. i dont understand why this board is so obsessed with hockeys irrelevance.

My football team was in the playoffs and I missed 3 games and fell asleep for like 3 others.

Football is boring when it isn't a nightgame

I find this very hard to believe and I'm not a avid furpuck fan

I went to high school with guys who went pro in hockey. There was nothing impressive physically or athletically about those guys. Just average white guys that grew up skating.

you can't disagree that the commercial penetration has gone beyond ridiculous

Florida is a bandwagon state with only Tampa being a city that supports it football and hockey

Everything else is a disappointment

>ESPN continues to diss hockey
>hockey continues to be itself
>ESPN hemorrhaging money from the billions it spent on NFL deals and billions more for MLB games
>hockey continues to grow a bit out to the west coast
>ESPN will slowly be dropped by cable providers after iger leaves
>nhl will only have a incompetent commish that refuses to put more Canadian teams but that might change soon
Eh

Not a fan but the truth is that

Hockey grows while ESPN , a former giant in sports , falls

I think you mean its college football. the bucs arent really supported like the gators

ESPN's making plenty of money on CFB

The fact that nobody watches SportCenter(due to broadband internet providing instant highlights) anymore is why their revenue fell off so significantly.

Also has a successful minor league team.

Inb4 "muh tarps"

Not just any city could have put up with the Jaguars for the last 10 years.

that's the thing, it's too fast-paced

it's perfect for americans in that aspect so I don't really get why it isn't more popular. + the violence

Probably because it is one of the least played sports/least accessible in the country. There are so many barriers such as the ability to ice skate, the equipment/# of people needed to play and hell even just the presence of an ice rink nearby. I grew up in the midwest and it was a 40 minute drive to the nearest ice rink and even if you got there good luck getting all the ice skaters to clear the ice so you and your buddies can stumble around with hockey sticks and a puck.

I think baseball is having the same problem nowadays. It isnt easy to field enough people for a quick pickup game of baseball and its hard enough to find a place to play it even if you do find people.

Its much easier to play a 2v2 pickup game of football or basketball.

ESPN was a problem. ESPN/ABC/Disney wanted exclusivity, but wasn't willing to feature it as part of their programming befitting such a deal. The NHL didn't do much better going to the motherfuckin' Outdoor Life Network, but they got a deal on their terms and have been growing their own product they control. ESPN is all sorts of butthurt even though they never would have given the NHL what it needed.

Buffalo has been worst off since the creation span of the jags
OAKLAND has been worst off both on football and baseball(getting slightly better over the years but that aint saying much)

>ESPN's making plenty of money on CFB
Their new year game was a terrible experiment that backfired on them
>The fact that nobody watches SportCenter(due to broadband internet providing instant highlights) anymore is why their revenue fell off so significantly.
It is much more than just that

you can't tell me a channel is held by a single show which can be the make or break for it because that is unbelievable and impossible .

ESPN spent billions on NFL deals that don't matter anymore because of NFL network , soon twitter if their streaming really takes off , the local television markets shifting with the rams coming back
>>
>>66943289
>you can't tell me a channel is held by a single show

this is literally all espn really was during the 80s and early 90s

>NFL network

yeah those thursday night games have been a massive success

>soon twitter if their streaming really takes off

they paid 10 mil for thursday night games literally nobody watches. meanwhile ESPN has MNF thru 2021 which you can access via any mobile WatchESPN app, so it's not like they have completely ignored where the future is headed

ESPN is still doing quite well. they just had to restructure a bit.

They still have CFB playoffs, UEFA Euros, USMNT, Monday Night Football, NBA, College Basketball, Golf, Tennis, etc

in the end, the networks are fine.. it's the cable companies that are literally walking dead
