I don't know about gyms there/what the quality is like, but anywhere is a good place to start really, especially if it's only 5 minutes away for you - better than traveling to liverpool/manchester and realising it isn't for you.
I've been to 3 gyms in Liverpool, all of them were positive experiences on my first visit, and people are very understanding of initial fears that many have on their first few days tbqh. It's hard to explain without actually going there, but yeah, give it a shot because I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
