Hello newfriend.

Pay denbts.

Last year I went to the Hungaroring, I got to see 2/3 of the track without moving my ass on Sunday. I saw Perez's flipped car on friday, got to see Tricky's car vomiting smoke on Saturday, and got to see the mercs getting BTFO by the Ferraris at the start, saw the whole grid, the drivers paying respect to Jules, I was surrounded by the tifosi who cheered every time Vettel went past and I got to see him cross the line, get out of the car, wave the flags and get on the podium with the also insanely happy Red Bull guys. I'm sort of a tifoso since I was a kid, saw Schuey with my own eyes but this race is the best F1 related memory so far. That's how this is fun.

dog bless arribavene
>>
>>66630520
fia should get rid of rule 20.1
"The driver must drive the car alone and unaided"

they have 500 different settings so it doesn't really matter,
because they can greatly change driving characteristc,
those settings are the driver aids in themselves.

Why don't McLaren and Willams, or even Sauber get a bonus for Long Standing Team?
>>
>>66632608

I see. I still think it's just an experience only for the most hardcore of fans. I'd still rather watch it on my tv to be honest while being comfy on my bed. Plus, I would have to travel to another country and pay a shitload of money to see it live.
>>
>>66632759

What they should do is go back to an engine formula that doesn't require a computer science degree to operate it
>>
>>66633027

Williams does. That 10 mil is a "heritage bonus" for basically being a classic team

Also how the fuck can Sauber be broke if the only thing they're spending money on is the engines? They barely developed their car and they employ two paydrivers.
>>
>>66633106
let me share another experience with you
I was there in 2012 somewhere between turns 10 and 11 seeing the cars for like 3 seconds
there were too many people
it was uncomfortable sitting on the ground
it rained the night before and in the morning so it was all mud
the sun burned my face
literally nothing happened during the race
hamilton won

so your point is absolutely right
last year I just managed to hit the jackpot

Shame? No.

There's plenty of places to watch a rally event that don't involve being in the impact zone of an out of control car.

No, what we really need is more dead and injured drivers because dipshits, like you and Nigel there, don't want F1 to "waste" time picking up shit that can blow out tires or hit drivers in the head while driving at 200 MPH.
>>
>>66636177
Why do you care about dead drivers in a sport that haven't had a mortal accident in 2 decades and has the most safe cars in the world (see Alonso's crash)?

If something there's more chances of F1 drivers dying in COTA due to retarded Murican gun laws than driving through debris that gets shattered in million piece if a driver actually goes through them

That's not what I said, but nice strawman m8. I asked what is your motive for caring about this, since the wellfare of the sport clearly isn't. You seem to be trying to convey to us that F1 isn't a safe sport, when the numbers and accidents clearly indicate that it's one of the safest "dangerous" sports in the world.

You are trying to tell us the sport should be pretty much deleted in order to get more safety even though. You are just lobbying your stupid ideas to a crowd you obviously don't care about (if you actually cared about the sprot you wouldn't be saying you need 5 safety cars per race) and you are just either baiting or retarded, which, considering you are american, I can understand. either that or you are just one of these facebook muggers that just go to whatever is hot right now and started to learn about this sport with Haas being successful and you are trying to seem a hipster with lots of knowledge with a wikipedia tab open in your second monitor.

Go lobby for guns to be removed if you care so much about deaths, not about a motorsport with 3 deaths in 20 years.

In Massa's case there also wasn't a chance to pick it up. It flew off Rubens' car and hit him directly, which is much worse than something just flicked up off the track. As far as I know there has never been a case of a driver being injured by debris on a track, not even in the case of a resulting puncture.

>trying to argue logically with an American

>>66636736
>That's not what I said, but nice strawman m8

Is it a language barrier or something, Spain? What part of driver safety do you not understand?

Debris on the track CAN: reduce traction, puncture tires, hit drivers in the head, and cause potentially fatal accidents.

There is absolutely zero reason to NOT mandate F1 clean up debris before allowing green flag racing to commence. None.

Nobody likes cautions, but they're better than dead drivers, fucked up cars, or fans.

Quit trying to defend that bullshit.

>>66636965
>That's not related to the argument at all though.

It absolutely is, as ALL potential hazards on a track should mandate a yellow flag, and a safety car.

Whether it's debris, or some Japs operating a tractor on the side of a track, a safety car will help keep drivers at safe speeds until the hazard is removed, and then, and ONLY then, should green flag racing commence.

i'm simply speaking the truth. i'll use NASCAR as an example: they had to slow the cars down to make it safer after Earnhardt's death. NASCAR has been plummeting in viewership and is practically a dead sport.

the same can and will happen to F1. the hybrid engines effectively neutered the sport. there is NOTHING exciting about F1 anymore(except for crashes obviously).

What? GA is the same as it was last year in terms of access, but a little cheaper. Grandstand/bleacher tickets always restrict you to one section of the track.

>>66632033
Because you get cheeky pictures like pic related.

>>66632204
$150 for GA, cheapest it's ever been. Parking is a little more expensive than last year if you pay for it (up to $100 from $70). Not sure what the status on the free shuttles is this year.
>>
>>66646161
>Parking is a little more expensive than last year if you pay for it (up to $100 from $70)
WTF?! How can parking even be that expensive? And who actually parks there with those prices?
>>
>>66646161
>What? GA is the same as it was last year in terms of access, but a little cheaper. Grandstand/bleacher tickets always restrict you to one section of the track.

guess I'm just too used to sportscar and indycar races where you can move around
>>
>>66646247
>And who actually parks there with those prices?
Considering it's that or ride a 45m-1hr shuttle with fuckhuge lines and a bunch of people that are gonna smell like shit at the end of the day if it rains again (and some even if it doesn't rain), a lot of people paid for the $70 "park and ride" option in years past. You parked about 2 miles away then took a 10 minute shuttle to the track. Also keep in mind Americans drive a lot more than people in other countries, and many people don't stay near where the normal shuttles drop them off. Austin is really spread out, and some people don't even stay in Austin, but in one of the cities north or south to save on hotel costs and avoid some race traffic. COTA is on the very outskirts of Austin, right by a major nice tollroad that takes you around the city.

tl;dr The cost is worth it considering the logistics of getting to/from the track if you don't have a private helicopter. Also, I don't know if this makes a difference, but that's for all three days.

>>66646260
Are you talking about GA or seats in the stands? If it's GA, you can still move around. I usually sit in a different spot each day. If it's stands, pretty sure that's how it is at all F1 races. The F1 seating map is live on the COTA website if you want to check it out.
>>
>>66646365

That toll road is Texas-130, and it's fun as fuck. Speed limit is 85mph and the cops don't even look at you until you're over 100. But for the love of Jules stay the fuck off it after dark. No lights. NO fucking lights.

WHY ISN'T THIS JUST HAPPENING?
>>
>>66648132
Cause Todt and Bernie don't want the old format

Most likely they want a format where the top tier teams have to constantly be on track while the bottom tier ones disappear as soon as possible, in order to have better TV sponsor coverage

This kills the bottom tier teams, both because no primetime and because that way the FIA pay them less in TV and championship money

'86 is one of the GOAT seasons, the quality's not too bad, but not all races are in English.

Others from the 80s worth watching should be '82, '89 and maybe '88, although McLarenWinsLOL. Rest aren't bad, but not excellent.

From 90s, I'd say 1990, '94, '95, '97, '98, '99 were all good enough to hold your interest throughout the season.

From the 2000s, there's 2000 itself, then 2003, 2005 and '06. 2007 was decent, but was better for the off track drama than on track action, for the most part.

If out of that I had to recommend 5 full seasons to watch (in good quality and full English) I'd say - '94, '97, '98, '99 and 2003. You're far enough removed from today to not be too recent, but it's not exactly 'old'.

If you don't mind quality or language issues, then the early to mid 80s are great too

It was memorable because of McLarenWinsLOL in the 80s, but isn't exactly very aesthetically pleasing.

Also, if Streambro still posts here - Are you planning on downloading pre-1993 seasons for the stream any time soon? Personally, I don't mind language issues or some amount of poor quality races, if we can still watch most of the season.

I agree it has little on track action (unless people running out of fuel counts), but as a season, the championship (& momentum) swings between the 4 in a pretty compelling manner. You have to pretend you don't know who's gonna win at the end of the year to enjoy that one, I'll give you that

The real question is whether or not Haas will be able to develop their car properly for future seasons. We really have no way of knowing that yet.

Look at Sauber. Came into F1 as a big name in sports cars, with a works deal, and were surprisingly competitive for the first couple of seasons. Then they plateaued as a midfield team for many years before finally being competitive again with BMW, but since they've left they've been relegated to lower-midfielders/backmarkers.

Why are people so in love with Grosjean all of a sudden? I highly doubt Ferrari will sign him, or that Kimi will even retire after this year unless he performs abysmally (which he hasn't so far). I feel like Grosjean is made of the same material as Massa. Quick and good, if not great when everything is going their way and the car is how they like it. Very easily affected by external factors and emotions, and his 2012 season is still a stain on his reliability. Grosjean has also never really been under any real pressure, I mean like "win this race or we lose the WCC" pressure/ He was under pressure in 2012 as a "rookie" with a lot to prove and he performed terribly as we all know. His last 2 years at Lotus were difficult but he didn't really act that maturely about it, constantly bitching and complaining about it even though he knew the situation and knew that there's nothing to be done about it. Basically proves that he is not that great at dealing with adverse conditions.

He is performing well now because he is in an underdog car that happens to be a lot faster than expected and he's happy because he is overperforming (thanks to retirements and other teams fuck ups) against no real expectations at all. But put him in a real championship challenger car and I would be almost certain that he chokes and starts making mistakes again. I think even someone like Perez could probably remain less chokey in the Ferrari and I wouldn't even be that surprised if Ferrari picked Perez to replace Kimi eventually.

Shit car, shit luck, fucked by new quali, shit driving

Also something about the new car being harder on the tires and the new tire compounds making it harder to save tires like he's used to.

Force India's main advantage was that they had the Mercedes engine and even then they were behind Williams (equal by the end of 2015). In 2015 Renault and Honda engines were miles behind and Sauber was so shit that they couldn't do anything with the Ferrrari engine anyway. In 2016 Manor switched to Mercedes, Toro Rosso switched to Ferrari (2015), Haas joined with Ferrari, Honda made a huge leap forward, and even the Renault PU is being worked on actively, with considerable improvements coming in the future (Red Bull even have publicly admitted satisfaction with the engine which is kind of funny after the whole Tag Heuer branding). All of this is happening while the Mercedes power unit doesn't seem to have improved hugely in terms of performance, and the focus has been on reliability and consistency.

Basically the Mercedes enginebabbies of Williams and Force India are getting exposed hard.

The problem is that the new qualifying hasn't muddied up the grid. Mercedes has had a front-row lockout with Ferrari on the second row for both grands prix this season. The only "top" team that has been affected by the qualifying is Red Bull, and that was only because Kyvat had an electrical issue in Australia.

It didn't work.

So Bernie unironically just thinks its about the show, not about being a semi-legitimate sport in which achievements get due rewards.

As much as I hate MWL, I don't get why they should be punished for it? They did the best job, the best car and the best driver deserves to be P1. Other teams didn't do as good of a job, so why should it be made more difficult for Mercedes? How about F1 actually spends more than 10 seconds thinking about the rules and making engine regulations that don't cost 10000000000000 per unit and then further restrict in-season development or amount of power units in general?

I mean fuck what are they thinking? Now we're going to get cars with the same shitty super expensive power unit that's still going to sound like shit with even HEAVIER cars with even more downforce. Once the power-levels normalize in 2017 and teams figure out how to work the cars the best, it's going to be the most boring season ever unless two teams magically make cars that are identical in performance
>>
>>66650960

F1 drivers used to be even older back in the day. Now F1 is just easier to handle by the body, so we see 17yo kids driving it. Also Schumacher was racing in 2012 and he was as good as Rosberta.
>>
>>66650960

What is it that Kimi does that makes him such a desirable driver anyway? It's amazing that he's managed to have such a long career considering how inconsistent he manages to be. He must really be doing something amazing behind the scenes and whatnot.

It's pretty amazing the managed to make a comeback and then even make it back to Ferrari. Why did Ferrari rehire him anyway? He wasn't THAT impressive in the Lotus and the fact is that the Lotus was quite a good car both years. He still managed to underperform in qualifying and was getting beaten by Grosjean by the end. His paycheck in his first year back at Ferrari was one of the biggest on the grid as well. He's taken massive paycuts now but still gets paid more than anyone aside from the Merc and McLaren boys.
>>
>>66650992
I disagree. The top teams should always be punished, we would have exciting races.

If not by fucking up their qualy somehow by something else. A technical regulation maybe. FIA could enforce a rule decreasing the total brake disk width so only the fastest team (Mercedes) would be affected making them run slower or else the brakes would fail at some poing.
>>
>>66650674
But we're going to remember this and try to fuck them over next year with something even more retarded
>>
>>66651129
People say he works hard with the engineers and shit.
When it comes to inconsistency - it's only in quali. In races he's prolly one of the most consistent pilot.
And yes, he was THAT good in Lotus. Only after the back surgery has his results fallen down a lot. So yeah, it kinda explains why his first paycheck was huge - Ferrari hoped he'd recover from it better than he did.
Tho now his ability to keep up the pace with Vettel kinda makes him worth being in Ferrari. If only they didn't fuck his car and strategy up so often...
>>

>>66650992

I'm going to bet that Ferrari retain him for 2017 and that he might even grab a cheeky win at some point this season. The quali pace between him and Vettel honestly doesn't even seem that bad now, compared to last year.

He's a racer. Politics got to be too much for him. It's a shame really because he shows himself to be a very confident driver even today, doesn't seem to have lost much of that edge at all and I would argue that the oval Indycar races are more high intensity anus clench than most things F1.
>>
>>66652907

The drivers of the future don't really seem too bad. Even someone like Vettel still has 10 years left in the sport and probably 15 if he wants to go full Schumi

>Vandoorne
>Ocon
>Verstappen
>Wehrlein (a meme but he is good undoubtedly)
>Gasly? No idea if he's that good but still
>Some cheeky Finns in a couple of years

Along with drivers like Ricciardo, Kvyat, Sainz, Bottas reaching their primes and some actually getting into proper title challenger cars. Even someone like Nasr could be Massa-tier if he ever gets into a decent car. Magnussen will probably try and stay around for a while and Renault is projected to be competitive within the next few years.

I think the sport will be fine as long as the regulations don't go more full retard than they already have

I think we can all agree that if F1 was a spec series and there was literally nothing you could do to the car (setup, balance, wing adjustment etc) and all the cars were completely identical, Alonso would win just about every race.
>>
>>66657049
Alonso needs to retire he peaked a long time ago in the Renault
>>
>>66657065

He's still a great driver he just makes desperately poor career choices

Quitting Ferrari the season before they become the second best team in the championship, so you can flounder at the back of the grid? Lel.
>>
>>66657156
That's -still- a decision to be seen as good or bad. It depends on who's the next team to win a championship that isn't Mercedes. If it's Ferrari, he has said the decision would be terrible, but it doesn't look like that.

When Hamilton ditched Mclaren for Mercedes, many said he was doing the worst decision of his life. Hamilton bet on the Mercedes power unit and he won. Alonso did so in the Honda one and lost.

Overall I think it's karma. Alonso in his early years was a massive cocksucking piece of shit, one of the worst drivers to ever win 2 championships, and now he's getting karma for it. And he totally deserves it and I hope he never wins another race.
>>
>>66657023

Because he was a piece of shit

When he was on Renault he always acted like he was a god driving a shit car. His ego was over the line. We are talking of a sport where while still competitive, you are supposed to not be a gigantic dick to your team and be grateful that they give you an insane F1 car. Alonso would pretty much drive a race from start to finish and then go out and say "yeah, I'm a fucking god, suck my dick, choke on it". Next race something fails on the car and he would be "Renault is a piece of shit, this car is complete trash etc". He always did this. Whenever he won races, it was because he was good, whenever he lost it was because the car was shit. He would NEVER say "I fucked up". You simply don't do this. Being a dick to your team to me is still an insane offense that makes me mad every time. He did this at Renault, he did this at Mclaren (he was the one that leaked the spygate when Hamilton was winning against him even though he and De la Rosa used a lot of that info), he did it at Ferrari, and he does it at Mclaren again.

The worst of this came when he started to be a serious WC contender. Everything was everyone else's fault, and the worst is that the spanish tabloids and "long life fans" (2 years at max lol) would defend him. It became the norm to shit on Schumi, the "MAFIA", Ralf, Trulli, everyone that came across Alonsos path would become labeled as a piece of shit. Petrov got hit pretty badly too, but he's lucky it didn't happen earlier and a lot of people already saw through Alonso's bullshit. /pol/'s conspirations seem true compared to the amount of bullshit Alonso would spout.
>>
>>66657988
lmao
>>
>Even Spain hates Alonso

HOLY SHIT ALONSO ON SUICIDE WATCH
>>
>>66657643
He ended his time at Ferrari a year early. If he was there for 2015 he would have gotten a couple wins which would have given the team reason to extend his contract
>>
>>66657988
The truth is that he was in a car that not only was one of the best in the grid, it also had an insane start mechanism that made qualifying completely irrelevant. They would get on quali with conservative fuel, do a decent lap and then put the turbo on the start. Whoop, 1-2 or similar with better tyres and more fuel than the rest. Since this was the crazy aero era, nobody would get close to the car in front, so overtaking was almost nule.

Schumi would spent like 30 laps behind alonso in some races (Imola I think) or viceversa, unable to get close to him. The only way of overtaking was pit strategy, for example when Schumi did a marvelous 4 pitstop strategy on France.

So he gets an insane car, still complains to the FIA (which actualy made other teams able to fight with Ferrari by pretty much nerfing Ferrari to the ground after winning all the championships in a row), complains about other drivers and laughs at them when he wins. A real peice of shit

The worst of this was in Suzuka, when Schumi was ahead of him, and his motor broke. What Schumi did was go to the team and hug every of his mechanics, even though he just lost the championship right there.

Alonso would've killed everyone in his team.

So yeah, when he went to Mclaren and hell broke loose, he started saying that "hamilton copies my telemetry", "Hamilton is getting better peice from the team", "the team hates me and wants hamilton to win" and this eventually resulted in both losing the championship to Raikkonen. I couldn't tell if I was happier because Alonso lost or because Ferrari won.

And then he goes to Renault, wich was in a position similar to Mclaren, he wins Singapore due to a scheduled crash and finally goes to the Ferrari.

It's karma. He deserves it.
>>
>>66658111

It's just one self-hating autist.
Don't mind.
>>
>>66658117
but the only reason they finally built a winning car is because the people that liked alonso left the team, and the dominoes tumbled and he was left essentially forced out.
>>
>>66653564
>The "Pinacle" of Motorsport
Will always attract exceptional talent and the current ladder system makes it easy to spot good drivers. It's just a case of how many F1 teams will risk the experienced veteran to use an untested rookie

>Vandoorne - cucked by Jenson for the McLelren seat
>Ocon - Forced to go the DTM route, may do a Wehrlein
>Verstappen - Future GOAT, everyone knows it
>Wehrlein - Untested but may not be terrible
>Gasly - Probably no chance anymore, has missed too many opportunities, see Marciello
>Some Cheeky Finns - Maybe, but don't hold your breath, Kari / Huovinen maybe.

As for the experienced runners, they're great proof that the new generation need a chance. If F1's gonna go downhill in the next few years, why drag down the experienced drivers reputations.

As much as I get this is a meme thing to say
>Build it from the Ground Up
Other than Ham / Ros / Vet, why not just get rid of the old garde in a blaze of fire, rather than letting them sizzle out, squandering others careers.
>>
>>66658343

The oldest of the old do probably need to go. It's just that they are all a proven quality and a kind of "you know exactly what you're getting" type of deal and none of them are so past their prime that they can't compete at all.

>>66657988
>>66658162

I'm amazed that Alonso has so many fans. I bet most of them are from the Ferrari years and not before. He's been a part of so many controversies and he was kind of a dick back in the day. You do have to remember that he was literally the youngest champion ever at the time so it's somewhat understandable that it got to his head. The McLaren situation is probably partially his fault, but also Hamilton's and Dennis' typical picking sides and terrible driver management.

He does seem to have calmed down a bit and I'm sure the McHonda extravaganza has humbled him more. Too bad the fans can't really see what he's like behind the scenes, because I assume he must be quite a terrible person to work with taken into consideration his track record. Very surprised Dennis actually took him back, why would he? I guess he knows that Alonso is actually amazingly good, like worth leaving Magnussen and Vandoorne without a drive good. Although Dennis did say that the best driver he's ever worked with was Mika lol.

What does /f1/ think of Sergei Sirotkin? 3rd in his first year in Gp2 is pretty good and the rest of his racing record isnt too bad, plus he has Vandoornes seat at ART for this year. He done testing for Sauber in 2014 or '15 too, potentially next Russian F1 driver?

less downforce on an oval is a good thing for the spectators though
>>
>>66661062
Not in this case, the down force from the floor would be a lot less meaning that most of it comes from the body which is affected much more by dirty air so slipstreaming and overtaking will be worse

Because never have a team come into the sport and done this well ever. Ya ok they are Ferrari B team but they still had to design a chassis and put everything together. That isn't easy to get right imo. Look at the shit show at McLaren Honda in 2015 where a works PU supplier and one of the powerhouses of the sport could barely get a car to even work.
