You are right but the system is broken to begin with. Let me explain:

I met a lot of kids that had a "never dive" mentality, but the ones that go pro always end up doing for this reason.

As you say it's broken. It's need to be a case that if you go down without the ball being won it's a foul or it's a yellow card for a dive (unless it's a trip or something that would actually cause someone to go down and they don't then waive their arms in protest)
But there's tonnes of rules which just get casually overlooked now (pulling shirts at corners for instance) and they're too far gone to be able to claw back

Don't know about AFL, but in rugby you don't get a pause in play for "being in pain" like you do in soccer/football, so rolling "in pain" is not a viable tactic for setting up a play (be it in offence when your players position themselves and/or try the opponents to relax and lose focus; or in defence when you break up the opposing team attack effort and allow your team to better prepare for it).
