It could well happen tomorrow. Their pace this weekend has been great. Jenson 3rd in FP2, then they're 12th and 14th on the grid. It looks WAY better than last season. Perhaps we can now consider them a mid-table team again rather than a back-of-the-grid team
>This year, it seems that even a newcomer like Haas get their shit together straight up, so less chances to luck out a point.

Haas is still a new team, and yes, they get their PU and some other parts from Ferrari, but that's it.
Unless Honda can bring up some revolutionary shit with the few tokens they have, McLelren Hondshit will barely improve this season.

the 2015 cars were only 1.5-2s quicker than 2015 because the nose regulations (and a few others) changed

It's actually unbelievable how clean the running has been all weekend.
I don't think there's been a single yellow flag the whole weekend and the biggest incidents so far have been some cars losing the rear or going wide in the last corner. What does this even signify?
Is there any reason to think tomorrow will be good at all? If Hamilton is still P1 after the first corner, the race is over. Why am I even looking forward to this?
Kvyat is doing a great job of making it an easy choice for Red Bull on who to fire.

>>66543636
>>66543751
>>66540940
You do realize that the drivers attend a meeting prior to the weekend in which they agree upon things like track limits, and where they are enforced and where they are not.
It is generally an agreement that in difficult corners where it is easy to go off track, the track limits rule is not actively enforced unless repeated consistently with considerable gain. Similarly, some corners have a much stricter adherence to the rule because the FIA knows that it is a huge time benefit if you go wide in the corner (e.g. Copse at Silverstone which caused some laps to be DQ'd last year)
The whole "hurr 4 wheels off the track automatic disqualification!!! especially when its my least favorite driver!!!" opinion is stupid and untrue.
>>66543851
Three reprimands -> 10 place grid penalty, but they have to be reprimands for "driving infringements" and if this doesn't qualify as one then it's basically just a caution.
>>66543934
going wide was certainly faster than braking hard to keep within tracklimits, which would probably eliminated him.
>>66543934
Point being that going wide in the last corner at Bahrain serves no real advantage as it's so bumpy anyway that it actually loses the driver time, and is therefore not actively policed as a track limits violation because its pointless and the time lost going off track already destroys your lap anyway

Will anyone from Formula E ever race in Formula 1 (again)?
Why is Vergne still hanging around? He was in Melbourne for example in Ferrari gear. Does he think he's going to pull a Gutierrez despite having no financial backing and choking hard in an electric karting series despite being straight out of F1?

Just wait until the race. The quali is boring as always but the actual races are consistently fun. Lots of memes, carnage, on the limit overtakes etc
Last season was a lot better so far though
>>66545346
It would've given him something, not to mention the opportunity to be observed by other teams. His lack of sponsorship automatically means he's tied to nobody, so if he were to do well (which he was clearly capable of given his speed), Force India at the absolute least would come knocking on his door.
He's no Haryanto or Stevens. Just because Manorussia and Sauber are dead end choices for dead end drivers doesn't mean it would've been the same for him. Nasr's likely to have a decent future and he's considerably worse.

It's refreshing to get a break from the corporate super-serious circus that is F1 and to see top-tier drivers actually capable of talking to each other despite being "rivals" and not having egos that prevent them from being normal people. It has something of a charm to it.
Current F1 has no real "charisma", it has no charm, no real soul at this point. Everything is a secret, how much can you possibly sandbag until you finally push the car for 1 lap in one qualifying session, how much you can preserve your wear rates and fuel consumption in the race etc. And the drivers rarely say what they want to say and the huge media attention around the sport makes it so, as every little thing is under huge scrutiny.
F1 continues to try and push this idea of prestige despite the fact that the sport lost its flair a long time ago. It's not dangerous anymore, the drivers aren't manly heroes, the cars aren't untameable beasts with huge engines, and the racing is mostly boring and super cautious because no one wants to pull off anything crazy just in case you destroy your car (except based MAD MAX)

Really seems to help that a good number of big name drivers in FE are ones which are not known to have big egos. It helps foster the right kind of culture and is quite welcoming for the younger or weaker guys as well.
>no real charisma
>lost its flair a long time ago
I'm not entirely sure about this, given how quickly the sport went from being bashed to being hugely praised on two different occasions in recent times (the borefest of Bahrain 2010 vs the ultimate championship fight of that year, 2011's VWL vs the insane rise of Ferrari in 2012). That said, it's going to take a lot more to get itself out of this slump, and MWL certainly isn't helping in that regard.
>the drivers aren't manly heroes
You sure about that? Just look at how people view Vettel and Alonso. I don't agree with them on the latter at all, but he's still one hell of a character. This one strikes me as being more of a case of people looking through rose-tinted glasses and remembering only the notable moments, elements, people and the like.
>untameable beasts with huge engines
Could better marketing solve the latter issue? You'd think Lauda crashing in 2004, Hakkinen being slow in 2006 or Brundle crashing in 2015 would make the cars of the last 12 years stand out more, but the FIA are failing to push the sport's image in the right direction.

Their pace this weekend has been surprisingly good though. I'm hoping they can emerge this season as a solid middle-of-the-grid team. I reckon they can. If they finish around the mid-point in the constructors' then it will be a vast improvement on last season, and something to build on for 2017

>>66548175

Also his race pace is basically up to par with Vettel regardless of how slow he is at quali. If he can have an error-free (both himself and the team/car) race tomorrow I would not be surprised to see him in P1 or P2. He historically does well on this track as well and managed his tires better than anyone last year. Mercedes' race pace relative to Ferrari does not seem as strong anyway. If a Mercedes gets stuck behind any car at all they will be useless, as shown earlier.
Then again he could choke the start and crash out in the first lap or spend the whole race overtaking from the back and finishing in P4
>>66548175

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xqh5jo_formula-1-bahrain-gp-2012-onboard-raikkonen-vs-vettel_sport
To be fair, so does Vettel, 2014's safety car misfortune or 2015's Vetlel moments notwithstanding. Not that it's going to help either of them since Mercedes are simply too far ahead on race pace, especially if AMuS are right about those turbo issues.
>>66547964
They were pretty strong in Super GT last year, at least. Maybe they can only do hybrids now.
>>66548350
But was he really? I mean, his F1 stint was as unremarkable as of any generic moving chicane team driver, but in his third year of GP2 he showed half-decent pace, he was pretty damn okay in IndyLights and put in some good laps in St. Petersburg. Seems like he's more comfortable with these cars than he was with F1, especially as they seem to be glorified GP2 cars.
Not that I wasn't surprised seeing him that high.
>>66548334
m8, he is referring to honda in indycar.
>>66548370
desu i'd give Hairyanus a better chance because his car could work for the whole race
Serious question though, did Button basically just force his own retirement? As good as Vandoorne might be, it's really not "acceptable" for Button to be outqualified by a rookie who's driven only a handful of laps in this particular F1 car, and probably less than 100 laps of F1 total in his life.
Bit of a blogpost but I honestly think that Button's persona and charisma have gone a long way to really elongate his career. He is a known and valuable personality, sponsors like him, his face can be used to sell fucking insurance and banking shit in ads in the UK because he is a good looking and likeable dude. Can't really say the same about someone like Vandoorne who doesn't have much of a personality at all. I honestly think a lot these "big personas" go a long way in ensuring career longevity as long as you're not total shit. This might be part of the reason why Kvyat is constantly under pressure (somewhat deservedly) yet people completely brush off the fact that he outscored Ricciardo last year and somehow make it seem like not a big deal at all that tricky honeybadger smile lad got beaten by the driver people are expecting to be replaced now.
So many of these current/new generation drivers have like no distinguishable personality whatsoever, Kvyat, Bottas, Verstappen (minus the HOTHEAD), Wehrlein, Vandoorne etc. They're all super bland people outside of the car. Which basically means that they're not as beneficial for sponsors. Can you really sell anything if the face of your brand is someone like Kvyat?
>>66547964
Honda bankruptcy when? They're doing a pretty good job of ensuring no one wants to buy their cars both in the North American and the European/International/South American/where-ever people watch F1 market
I honestly don't know how long they can keep this up before it is ultimate sudoku time

>>66548677
>Can you really sell anything if the face of your brand is someone like Kvyat?
You can, in Russia. Patriotism goes a long way.
Not that they use him too much in ads over here, to be honest.
That said, it's just one qualifying. Vandoorne has consistently proven himself as a great qualifier and racer, but Button is an old fox with many tricks and he generally does better in races. And not many people expect him to stay for another season in the first place (it should've been Alonso/KMag or Alonso/Vandoorne THIS season before Button outwitted Dennis somehow) so he can't really force anything at this point except for a surprising extension of contract/team change.
>>66548810
McLaren's chassis doesn't even seem that great.
Everything about their car so far is just basically average as hell

>>66548677
>it's really not "acceptable" for Button to be outqualified by a rookie who's driven only a handful of laps in this particular F1 car
Jenson's not a good qualifier. It means very little. Are we already so quick to forget that, even with the help of a few fluke results, he outscored ALONSO last year?
He'll be fine. It's a great result for Vandoorne, but it's not going to harm Button that much imo.
>>66548742
Don't know about what people generally think, but I'd never really judge road cars by race car performance of the same brand. Hell, most of these teams don't even make road cars, especially ones that ordinary people can buy.
Not to mention that a lot of road car companies share technology and parts and whatnot so the road cars are all about the same with some exceptions.

And they sure need a big name designer, seems like most left for Mercedes or Red Bull or wherever.
>>66548946
Yeah we all know that Button isn't a quali specialist. But even then it his hard to justify what happened. I'm not saying Button is shit, I'm saying that this situation basically directly highlights the situation McLaren finds themselves in, and exemplifies the fact that Button's experience and the paycheck that goes with it is not necessarily as valuable as McLaren have previously thought.
Even if this somehow means that Vandoorne is literal GOAT tier then McLaren have to keep him somehow, and that means someone is going to have to go. And unless Alonso suffers permanent brain injury, the one to go is going to be Button, especially if he performs at a worse level than Vandoorne already.
>>66549270
Herbert is a beta cuck mate who won like 3 races in his whole career, all of which were fluke luck victories with several retirements from positions above him. I have no idea why he is employed as a commentator. He wasn't a great or even good driver, he isn't likable and he honestly comes off as quite dumb in many segments, which is further evidenced by the fact that he honestly cannot construct a proper argument for what he believes, whether it's live on air or in written form, as evidenced by his Alonso smear-piece.
Herbert himself had a crash that almost killed him and permanently affected his career and ability early on in his career and yet he has somehow the audacity to claim that Alonso isn't good enough for F1 anymore now that he crashed. And that Alonso isn't passionate enough about driving because he didn't object to the FIA judgment on his injury being too severe.
I mean what was Herbert expecting? He basically wrote a poorly justified criticism of a very dedicated driver for seemingly no reason at all other than clickbait
>>66549365
Button was never supposed to stay in the first place! For a few years now. Yet somehow this is his fifth partner in this team, two of which were world champions. And with the way things are going with Alonso, who knows, he might just get tired of this shit. And Vandoorne himself, albeit unlikely, might get headhunted into, who knows, Williams or something.
That said, Alonso/Vandoorne or Alonso/KMag should have already happened this year and Alonso/Vandoorne was always the plan for next year before this season even began, so that's still the likeliest outcome.

>>66549499
>and yet he has somehow the audacity to claim that Alonso isn't good enough for F1 anymore now that he crashed
Uh, does his own performance really invalidate his point in any way? As I said earlier in the thread, Alonso himself pointed out that he wasn't good in 2015, and he's crashed into other drivers out of idiocy in both of the last 2 races. He really hasn't been the same driver since leaving Ferrari, and you don't need to be a rocket scientist to know that. People just give Alonso more of a leeway because Britain (outside of a handful of individuals like Herbert) is bloody obsessed with him to the point of mass hysteria and retardation.
>WHAT ARE THEY DOING?
>GET THEM OUT OF THE FUCKING WAY
>>66549578
Yeah Herbert was right in suggesting that Alonso should retire. His wording just was a bit strong. If he doesn't quit, the sport will kill him.

>2017 aero comes along nicely

Based Gimi. Does he want them to get out of the way too?
Also, source?
>>66549540
That's true. Weird how Button just keeps getting another year and another year added. They even had a retirement recap segment for him a few years back haha. I guess Dennis just really likes him and to be fair he has performed quite well against some strong teammates.
I wonder if McLaren's mismanagements are down to Dennis or if there's other factors at play? Dennis is an autist but he's a successful autist who has brought together amazing teams in the past, Prost-Senna era, Häkkinen-era, Hamilton era, even arguably the Kimi era despite it not resulting in a WDC.. All of those instances show that Dennis is in fact not an idiot at all and knows the sport inside and out. It's not like he suddenly forgot. So wtf is going on? It's not even the engine fiasco, it's the culmination of so many things
>losing hamilton
>the endless quest for replacing Hamilton
>Perez, Magnussen, Vandoorne to an extent
>numerous personnel changes
>dropping and losing sponsors
>unclear driver signings
>weird design direction changes
>what ever happened to Whitmarsh?
It all just gives the impression of a team scrambling around without a clear focus or aim. Button is seemingly the only real constant that the team has had in the past 5 years.
>>66549705
Actually Dennis hates Button but the Bahraini family which owns 50 (?) % of McLaren insisted that he stays for 2015 and 2016. So did Honda. It's why it to Ron so long to announce the lineup because he tried to put Alonso alongside his then favourite young talent (not heidfeld I believe)
>>66549705
Eh, he lost Prost and Alonso the first time the same way he lost Hamilton, and he's attracted the ire of drivers like DC and Kimi as well. His favoritism, while positive when taking a cursory glance at what it's given us, quickly turns negative when you study the details or figure out what it's robbed us of.
>no Heidfeld or Hill
>several great drivers hate what he's done, to the point where Mika, to this day, feels sorry for DC and is even more humble around him
>the engine saga with Senna despite Prost being the better driver
And that's just a handful of events.
Also, as >>66549765 said, Dennis isn't really fond of Jenson. He also tried really hard to get KMag into the team and to get Jenson to retire, but was eventually overruled.
So apparently Da Costa just lost the pole position over a 0.05 below the limit tyre pressure.

Is Alonso really that bad though? Sure 2015 was a disaster but he was driving an actual backmarker. You can't shine in a backmarker. Hell you could put Nasr in the Ferrari and he'd be pretty good but because he's driving a shit Sauber, no one will ever be impressed by what he does simply because the car doesn't enable him to shine, except in comparison to his teammate. 2015 was an oddball season for so many reasons for both the drivers and the McLaren team so I don't think it's fair to judge so harshly based on what happened then.
Maybe his instincts aren't as sharp as he hasn't been racing hard for the past year, but honestly it seems like huge speculation to say he has deteriorated significantly since Ferrari. The crash with Gutierrez was his fault but it only gets talked about because it was a huge destruction crash. If there was no sand, he would have just breaked on the tarmac and crashed into a barrier like Max did and there wouldn't be 1000 replays of the crash everywhere.
Mansell won a championship age 42 or something. Damon Hill entered F1 in his 30's. Age is a factor but it is not 100% determining of performance. Even Schumi was back on pace by the time he retired the second time.
I'll agree with you if there is a noticeable pattern of Alonso's deterioration. So far he just coincidentally crashed in 2 races back to back and I don't even rememebr what happened in Abu Dhabi. It's going to take one or two cool overtakes and no one will doubt his determination and talk about his eventual retirement again.
>"If you take the top rally guys it is absolutely amazing what they do. If you take the top NASCAR guys it's not like we can jump in and suddenly beat them. They own the things that they do, but if they came here they would be in trouble also. It depends what you are used to and what you do, but if you just want to look at the highest level of racing at race circuits, for sure it is F1."
Would be bizarre being in the same room with Kimi when he speaks like that.

Button isn't a bad driver, he's always been that constant guy that will just drive the car and finish in the best position he can without driving to the limit
Sort of like a better Stevens, drives the car home without pushing too hard, getting good results with it. For example when Perez was in Mclaren, the guy was fast but he crashed or did really stupid stuff every now and then, canceling the good results
Also, if he got dropped from Mclaren he would've killed himself for sure
>2014 father dies
>2015 cucked by Jessica
>2016 dropped from Mclelren
He's also one of the few drivers that aren't cocky pieces of shit and still remains gentlemanish. Unless the car has understeer.
>>66549935
if only they'd DQed Senna in London for blocking him
So, Formula E. Will we make our own thread for the race? Go to the motor/sp/ort general? What's the plan friends?
>>66549781
>>66549765
Any reason as to why Dennis hates Button?
I mean sure yea I know Dennis isn't the perfect person but at least his leadership has brought in success despite his mismanagement. His favoritism is very noticeable though and its weird that he can even get away with it. He had such a huge boner for Häkkinen as well even though a driver like DC (who is rarely rated as a great) could have achieved similar results if given the same sort of support and backing as Häkkinen did.
Häkkinen was flat out better at qualifying (DC himself has admitted this), but he was also one of the better qualifiers in history. On raceday though the two were not too far apart and Mika could have easily supported David into a championship if such a situation would have arised.
>>66549499
You realize Mark Blundel used to be an F1 pundit right?
it's not like their standards are particularly high. Having simply driven an F1 car is enough.
>>66550012
the /f1/ thread has always been fine
>>66550012
Either our own thread or just stay here, but it's not like there's too many of us to require a dedicated thread and this one isn't very active overnight.
>>66549944
Button is just extremely consistent. He never really was anything too special, its just that his career got a massive boost due to the lottery win that was Brawn. If the Brawn GP car would have been some shit tier Honda instead, Button would have retired from F1 years ago. Had it not been for that year, he would have been known as that pretty good midfield driver who won a few races and was good in the wet.
>>66550066
Pretty much this, yeah >>66550067
I do wonder what shall the few of us who stay for Indycar do, though.
Speaking of which, just one bong left until LBePrix.
>>66550018
Probably because Jenson doesn't conform to his autistic ways. But who really understands Ron? I don't think he ever gave a clear answer to that, maybe he thinks Jenson isn't fast enough or too expensive. Who knows?
>>66550018
Hell if I know why he's not fond of Jenson. Generally, he's just very stubborn and possibly more than just a little bit bitter about losing KMag and having to push even Vandoorne further and further away, but I don't think that would be enough in this case. Ron's bloody weird.
>(who is rarely rated as a great)
This really goes to show how much the outside perception of drivers can shape their legacy. To me, DC is easily a great driver, as is Rubens, but merely had the misfortune of dealing with Mika and Michael, two god tier legends, in their respective prime.
That said, let's be honest - DC wasn't really that close. In 1997 he only won the teammate battle because Mika's luck was abysmal, and in 2001 Mika himself said he only really raced at 100% capacity in two races (and he doesn't even know why), both of which he won.
>>66549944
>He's also one of the few drivers that aren't cocky pieces of shit and still remains gentlemanish.
You know that that is a ruse and Jenson is commonly known to be one of the biggest cunts in the paddock?
Because he is. He just covers it up well.

Lewis gets a drive through for speeding in pit resulting in 8th
Rosberg gets cucked at the start and comes 4th
Piquet got a 10-place penalty for changing the motor and since he was already starting the race from New York he got 10 seconds of extra pit stop time to compensate for the lack of grid places behind.
>>66550226
Wait. This isn't long beach at all, is it? God damn it, Fe.
I would rather they take the standard track and put in chicanes wherever needed, honestly. So tired of just sweepers and 90* turns in this series.

>>66550351
I think it's Long Beach with a part of it cut off. Seems like the cars not handling well and trying to have a decent amount of laps in a race causes all these boring-looking tracks.
At least there hasn't been another disastrous track like Beijing 2014, and that track itself was somewhat better in 2015, too.

>>66550351
