I just had this thought.
Messi is Superman -- genetically gifted with raw talent (power); Cruyff is Batman -- great player (hero), but his real strength is as a strategist.
In a physical confrontation, Batman loses to Superman every time; similarly, player vs player Cruyff loses to Messi every time. But as a coach, if Cruyff's task was to come up with a strategy to stop Messi, then the confrontation is more balanced. This would have been interesting to see, and I'd postulate that Cruyff has the advantage given that he pretty much invented Messi's style-of-play.

Cruyff invented dribbling?

But Cruijff was gifted with raw talent as well, he was the transition of old to modern football

dribbling probably was invented the moment football was invented
So if Cruyff had to manage a team versus a team managed by Messi, dem Messi boys would get BTFO by Cruyff Athletic?
Yes, obviously.

I meant Cruyff as a coach could stop Messi as a player. Most people could extrapolate that implication. Sorry about your sub-human IQ
