i have a few questions about haas.
why didnt they set up shop in austin texas instead of UK? i realize the uk is like the f1 hub of the world but this is an american team with the headquarters based in america. why is the team in the uk?
why didnt they sign rossi? im pretty sure manor didnt want to renew rossi's contract and haas was looking for a new driver. it seems like a perfect fit. instead they went for gutierrez who has barely any more experience than rossi.
also, how american is the team? really?

so if Hamilton posted the fastest time, and Rosberg the 2nd, then Hamilton would start 8th, and Rosberg 7th?

>>66378621
Their HQ is located in Charlotte because that is not only next to Stewart-Haas Racing's NASCAR's team it is also where all the American racing talent, suppliers and equipment is located. They also needed a European base to work out of and England is where all the F1 talent, suppliers and equipment is located. They also have a facility is Italy because that is where Ferrari and Dallara are located.
They choose Gutierrez over Rossi because Guenther Steiner obviously thought he was the better choice. They did hire a young American as a development driver who hopefully they can bring up into F1 to represent the US.
The team is owned by an American, the team is being run as an American team.

The only decent proposal like this that I've heard was to combine reverse championship position with qualifying position.
Example:
Rosberg gets 22 points for leading the WDC and 2 points for qualifying second. That's 24 points.
Wehrlein gets 7 points for being 16th in WDC and 21 points for qualifying 21st. That's 28 points.
Raikkonen gets 0 points for being unclassified in the WDC and 4 points for qualifying fourth. That's 4 points.
Then everyone is ordered from least points to most.
>>66382259
Leave the quali as it is. It's perfectly fine in the 2015 style.
What the fuck are F1 trying to achieve? Make every single moment an explosive energy excitement fest? Why is everyone somehow convinced that F1 is in it's most boring form now? Has anybody even watched races from like 2004 when there was maybe 4 overtakes the whole race?
Quali is boring most of the time, it was even more boring before. People didn't even watch FP's in the 80s or 90s. And now people are bitching that FREE PRACTICE SESSIONS are not exciting enough. Most races in 80s and 90s were mostly boring. F1 is the quintessential "leave the TV for 5 mins. come back and nothing's happened" sport and many people in the past woudl basically just watch the start and the first 5 laps and then watch something else.
Jesus christ. It's embarrassing to have to justify why I still follow this shit.
>>66382259
Convoluted bollocks desu, just put the fastest cars at the front.
If they're desperate for fast cars at the back then they could always just order the grid from the last GP's finishing positions.
>>66382346
>Quali is boring most of the time, it was even more boring before. People didn't even watch FP's in the 80s or 90s. And now people are bitching that FREE PRACTICE SESSIONS are not exciting enough. You just gave a good explanation on why FIA is "trying" to fix things.
>>66382346
I favor the old quali too, but that is the only decent proposal that would punish faster drivers.
>>66382387
Reverse grids reward sandbagging at the end of the race or even retiring if there is no chance of points.
>>66382346
>Has anybody even watched races from like 2004 when there was maybe 4 overtakes the whole race?
I loved them though. Those overtakes were often much more worthwhile than any of the DRS-helped ones we see today. There's little skill in passing these days. If the car's capable of it, you're going to do it anyway, with or without DRS. If the car's less capable of it, then the worse you are at wheel to wheel racing and the more cowardly your opponent is, the more likely you are to get past (see Bottas vs Palmer in Australia).
>>66382438
>slowest car in Q3 starts on pole
>Q3 becomes competition of who can set the slowest laptime possible
>cars cruising at 20 km/h in 1st gear
>10+ minute laptimes
perfect system
You need a system that is unjewable because the teams employ so many strategists that they will figure out the best way to jew the system before even running, as we saw in Australia
>>66382546
Yes, the reverse Q3 system is obviously retarded. But I don't see how the reverse WDC + normal quali system is jewable.

>>66381615
>hating the new meme
>>66382546
Found it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=el0QV-k_uqs
The story is that the old qualifying consisted of 2 lap attempts, the first one (pre-qualifying) to set an order for the second lap (reversed) and the second being the actual grid decider
So for example, Faglonso does a lap and ends 7th, then he's the 13th to go again (assuming 20 cars) to do the final time.
So what happened is that there was rain expected in the middle of the second set of laps, so everyone wanted to be the first to start the second set of laps to avoid the rain. This led to drivers going purposelly slow, some started doing flips and burnouts or stopped in track.
And then it didn't rain at all, thanks Britain's shitty weather!
Sadly I can't find video fo the pre-qualifying, which was the fun one

I like the "one and done" approach. Give the drivers practice, and then on qual day, you get warm up laps, and then you get ONE qual lap, and if you fuck it up, you fuck it up...and make them start from a stopped position so they have to showcase initial take off skill as well as standard lap driving skill.
>>66381284
you could get tickets for the WEC race in fuji, it's only a week later. Of course there is a strong chance it will be during a typhoon or monsoon since they keep scheduling it during the rainiest time of year in Japan.
Take the qualifying order from the previous race, and line them up back to front at the end of pit lane. Send a car out every three seconds to make a lap.
Ok. I fixed the qualifying.
>40 min quali

Didn't the one-lap qualifying already fail in mid 2000s due to sponsors' unhappiness and weather unpredictability?
>initial take off skill
I like this idea but i think stationary starts would be physically too risky since it is one start-finish line. Plus most constructors don't have engines under their controls. Smaller teams will be fucked.

>>66394063
iirc there was one session on Saturday with low-fuel, and a second on Sunday with race fuel, and the driver's fastest lap in each session was averaged
>>66394063
Average of single lap runs across two sessions (Saturday and Sunday). Saturday was low fuel where as Sunday you had the fuel you would start the race with.
It lasted for like the first 5 races in 2005 before they replaced it.
>>66394140
I think they just added the two laps together.
But the result is the same as using the average. Its not good, it has to be a single lap.
>>66394140
How long were the sessions?
It seems like it would be more interesting with many sessions, perhaps 4 or even 5, of around 10 minutes.
Each team has to try to set a good lap every session, and you don't have the fastest teams slacking off like they do now in Q1, and Q2.
>>66394302
They were single lap run session so yours is marginally better I guess
What is the point of Manor? What do they gain by being in F1? Do they even turn a profit?
Ok, so: new qualifying format:
Q1:
Random seedings, two cars on the track, rolling start a-la v8 supercars, one lap, first past the post goes through to Q2.
Q2:
Same thing.
Q3:
Multiball!!!!
>>66395675
nah, new qualy is a knockout tournament of the drivers playing Chicken
Why don't they make it kind of like a battle royale system where you have to knock out the other drivers through any means necessary?
They could bring Maldonado back as the track boss who intervenes at random times.
>>66380534

Been watching MotoGP since i was young. They didn't show it live on tv until Kallio got into MotoGP, so i got really hyped in 08. That then fizzeled like my interest.
Le Mans is pretty big here. I'll watch as many hours of it as humanly possible.
FE seems pretty exciting. They've started showing Indy and Nascar, but i think it's too memey. Also kind of lost interest in GP2 and Formula renault
>>66389257
I regularly watch MotoGP, and Formula E (if that counts), and like to follow Nascar and Indycar casually, but with interest in the championships.
Apart from these, if there's any motorsports on the telly, I watch it, even if I have no idea of the field or series.

Feeder team.
There's really 4 levels of F1.
Championship teams:
Ferrari, red bull, Mercedes
Ex-championship teams:
Williams, McLaren, Renault
Midfield feeders:
Sauber, Force India
New team feeders:
Manor, Haas
It is possible to move up groups and slide down. Sauber sank to 'new team' rank in '14 for getting 0 points. McLaren sank from the championship in '13 when Hamilton left and too engineers with him, thus rising Mercedes from midfield to championship.

>when Hamilton left and too engineers with him,
He literally only 'took' Paddy Lowe, who also came a year after (I.e. In 2014). All of Merc's current success is down to Brawn having insider info on the 2014 technical specs (both engine and otherwise) before they were officially ratified (This was confirmed by Shekelstone last year).
He then spent 2011-13 in assembling a number of former technical directors to run the development of each department, with a clear focus on 2014. Hamilton has almost nothing to do with MWL
>>66404922
bit early to judge, maybe he'll start doing destruction derby instead with maldonado
>>66405287
>All of Merc's current success is down to Brawn having insider info on the 2014 technical specs
Implying nothing has changed in 2 years. Theorizing too much T. Ganesan.
>>66405473
The engine formula is identical to the original, which is where the majority of the advantage lies, as is the aero, apart from insignificant cosmetic changes to get rid of the dick noses.
The current cars are a clear evolution of 2014-spec, which were developed under Aldo Costa (still chief designer, and hired in late 2011/early 2013), with departmental oversight from Geoff Willis and Bob Bell, both also hired by Brawn in the same period.
The engine was developed in a joint effort between Mercedes AMG in Stuttgart and Brixworth under Andy Cowell, who works directly for Merc, producing their F1 engines since 2005, and focused on hybrids since 2009.
Literally none of the influence of MWL is down to Hamlelton or any mythical engineers he brought over from McLaren.
Also, source on Ross Brawn having inside info on technical specs for engine: http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/motor-racing/mercedes-f1-engine-dominance-puts-off-new-teams-claims-bernie-ecclestone-10506861.html

Well the tension between the sides of the garages was way worse than the media even got a sniff of. The management did a fantastic job of keeping a lid on it. I can only recall one time both sides of the garage worked together in those 2 years.
The years with Schumi were much more fun, everyone knew we were working towards the new rule changes and building for the future, so everyone was more laid back. There was numerous times when a few of us would go for a drink with a driver, mainly Lewis.

i think it has to be set out like that at the outset though. those sports are willing to go to the length of offering apps on apple tv to provide content and make subscriptions easy for the customer.
some of the european leagues, i.e. english premier league and european champions league, don't do this and leave fans jumping from cable provider to cable provider, or streaming service to streaming service, to see content.
i currently pay for the streaming version of the local cable service to watch f1. some of the rights restrictions around one of the australian sports available on that same service are hilarious.

What are some classic quintessential Super Formula races to watch?
Best, craziest races etc.
Might start following Super Formula just to see more of based Lotterer and Kobayashi and see how much Vandoorne chokes
Funny how the Super Formula cars are only a few seconds slower than F1 despite having much much smaller budgets and less complex engines etc. F1 is just fantastic I hope they make the cars even heavier and even more reliant on energy recovery and neuter the engine completely and make it100% aero reliant

>>66423725
>single-manufacturer open wheel racing
>>66424578
Yeah Bahrain was a good race I agree. Silverstone was a borderline meme-fest with the Williams and rain and all
I wouldn't be surprised if F1 went back to being boring shit next weekend though and this season might turn out to be just as bad as 2015 once the teams figure out how to optimize their performance after which each team is going to be lapping in their own bracket, not directly challenged or challenging anyone aside from maybe their teammate which they can't do anyway because it destroys their tires.

He has this much F1 experience and is still so overwhelmingly shit?????
>>66425017
I can see that happening. Both are still performing very well despite being past their prime most likely. If the performance of the car improves to where it should be, then I don't see why either driver would want to leave. Mansell won his title at what, 42? I'm sure Button and Alonso who basically live and breathe fitness and racing can remain competitive into their 40's even.
Vandoorne is a hopeful. He might be shit in F1, who knows. And I don't see why it is that great of a choice to drop Mr. Consistency Jenson Button for Vandoorne who is either going to be another Perez/Magnussen, or become the next Hamilton and ditch the team as soon as there is a better opportunity. McLaren don't really "need" Vandoorne. They already have a strong lineup and even though they are old, I'm sure that Alonso could still comfortably challenge for wins and titles if he gets a good car under him. McLaren employs two World Champions who also happen to be the most experienced drivers on the grid. Vandoorne offers nothing to McLaren that they don't already have, except maybe youth.
The only way I see Vandoorne getting the McLaren drive in the next few years is by either Button/Alonso choosing to retire, or Alonso ragequitting the team (and retiring or joining Renault)

I miss this version of the nigger

I actually quite liked Hamilton when he was at McLaren, aside from the constant whining. He actually seemed to have some sort of pretense of humbleness back then and seemed much more normal and chilled.
Ever since he moved to Mercedes he went full NIGGA and his ego never stopped rising.
>>66427849
Bennis was probably paying him nothing. Hamilton contract with McLaren was done from before everyone was going to be a champion.
When he switched to Mercedes he was already considered one of the best drivers so he probably got a huge pay bonus and things started to change.

Honestly the sport feels like it's lost a lot in terms of characters after those two left. There's nothing quite like a likable slow driver, whether they're slow because of the car or because of themselves.

Besides being Mercedes' Chosen One (TM) and hailing from DTM of all the places, what do people have against Wehrlein? The kid doesn't seem all that bad - his start in Australia was excellent for someone in his first ever race, and outside of two specific laps just before the red flag he was much faster than Haryanto while only losing pace to the others due to (according to him at least) Manor's extremely high tyre wear. His personality doesn't seem too bad either.

Probably no where seeing how his main backer is out. He might have some outings in sports cars though.
His cousin is doing Italian f4 i think this year. Might see him in a few other open wheelers in the coming years.

OK Dost. I agree with your theory of Hamilton not being responsible. I never said he was.
But i refuse to accept your theory of Ross Brawn fucking everything up for F1.
Kindly allow me to show off now.
Caution: I am talking on the surface level (I am just a mid-tier fan)
Mercedes' customer teams did not get the max. output from the 2014 engine because of homologation dates. So teams like Red Bull and Force Bharath could not capitalize on it by incorporating it in their designs. Mercedes moved their gearbox forward because of the compressor being moved away from the turbine, and thus changed the center of gravity and hence the handling of the car, as I'm sure you may know.
But now Merc's customer teams can, and have, exactly the same engine, so all I am saying is there is more to it than one man Ross Brawn. That may have been a head-start as you have suggested (still sounds like puffery to me) but that was 2014. Two seasons later and nothing has changed. It's still HamRosVet.
>inb4 you said earlier things have changed
As for the AERO changes,
like i said earlier, because of the COMPRESSOR-TURBINE split, the INTERCOOLER was smaller and hence smaller side pods and a world beater car.

>Mercedes' customer teams did not get the max. output from the 2014 engine because of homologation dates.
mercedes' customer teams get a weaker engine spec..
> So teams like Red Bull and Force Bharath could not capitalize on it by incorporating it in their designs.
but red bull doesn't run a mercedes power unit.
> Mercedes moved their gearbox forward because of the compressor being moved away from the turbine
if anything it's moved slightly backwards because the gearbox is encased in another structural unit so that it can be changed because of damage or for aerodynamic reasons without incurring a gearbox penalty.
>>66435883
M8, the point you're missing is that every bit of advantage that Merc has due to the engine, whether it be due to higher power, or better packaging, CoG, heat harvesting etc. is because Merc had a year's head start in developing the engine in terms of power, performance, as well as packaging.
That head start, is due to Ross Brawn being on the working group that was discussing the new engine spec.
>Two seasons later and nothing has changed. It's still HamRosVet.
This is because engine development is largely frozen, and the allowed developments are not too major.
It may still be HamRosVet, but Vet is closer this year (it appears) than he was last year, and much much closer than Alonso was in 2014. The scale of improvement is unfortunately limited by the development cap on engines.
>so all I am saying is there is more to it than one man Ross Brawn
I've addressed that - The aero chief (Aldo Costa) was hired by Brawn in late 2011, after being unceremoniously dumped by Ferrari.
You may argue that that's a management move that anyone could make, but you also have to keep in mind that Brawn had groomed Costa for over 6 years at Ferrari in the SchumiWinsLol era, to take over as TD. Aldo Costa is definitely a Ross Brawn man.
Technical Director Bob Bell and Technology Director Geoff Willis, though not Brawn men to the degree of Costa, were nevertheless hired by Brawn in 2011, all with a clear plan towards the 2014-onward spec of cars.
>As for the AERO changes, like i said earlier, because of the COMPRESSOR-TURBINE split, the INTERCOOLER was smaller and hence smaller side pods and a world beater car.
And what gave them the ability to have that split? Merc was the only one who managed to eliminate the resonant harmonics that were making the split turbo unstable by 2014. It took Ferrari an additional year, and Renault still hasn't got it.
All that is down to the extra development time Merc was able to put down, starting their R&D in 2011 thanks to Brawn.

and all it took was half the field not even being there, a decent amount of cars already being DNF'd from the race, and her crew/team managing the best pit-stop/fuel strategy!

My bad. I meant to say Williams(I think!). Thanks for the correction.
>mercedes' customer teams get a weaker engine spec..
They had some issues in 2015 but now Williams, Force India and new Mercedes runner Manor Racing will get the up-to-date engine from the outset in 2016. Exactly the same (autosport.com)
>if anything it's moved slightly backwards
Pretty sure it's moved forward. In any case, i was trying to get the discussion move towards specifics.
>>66436395
Look, to me as a fan, you make it sound more complicated than it actually is. I refuse to believe Ferrari can't "think ahead" like Ross Brawn's super-magical prowess. There's a million more variables and only a matter of time before the others catch up. It can not and should not be due to one man. It's self-defeatist to think in a reductive manner like your keen observation of personnel tactics implies.
I've been watching this red bull global rallycross thing and I have no idea what to make of it. Pretty much every aspect of it is something I can't decide whether I like or not.
