Holy shit, are people really that ignorant of the law and legal principles? This stuff is important, you don't need to learn it in-depth like I am but people saying things like "the 15-year-old clearly wanted it so why the harsh sentence???" are missing the point completely
The point of the law is to protect people, even if its due to their own stupidity. That's why we still would punish a thief if the person whose house they broke into left the door wide open and all their valuables sitting in the hallway while they were out on holiday. Yes they're fucking retards, but they were still the victims of theft.
The principle here is that a 15-year-old doesn't know what is good for them, and that despite how much we all wanted to fuck older people when we were teens that, for many of us, wouldn't actually have been a beneficial experience. Yes you can argue that some 15-year-olds won't be harmed by fucking Johnson but what kind of test do you propose for the courts to apply to determine this? It'd never work. We operate on the basis that anyone under 16 is legally incapable of giving consent regardless of how much they yell "FUCK ME RIGHT NOW" because there must be a cut-off point whereby people cannot determine what is in their own interests, and 18 seems to ignore reality while many 15-year-olds and below would clearly suffer from sexual encounters with older people so we settled at 16.
