It's far better than being in OFC no matter how you twist it. The only team in OFC with even a slight chance of stopping Australia is New Zealand, and that pretty much never happened in any instance where Australia were actually trying. If anything, their protests might make FIFA question the qualifying procedure. In my opinion something should be done, leaving it like this is an inconvenience for everybody. And I think it's fine Australia being in AFC, there's precedent for teams not playing in their home continental confederation anyway, see Israel, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan playing in Europe despite being in Asia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana playing in North America despite being in South America. Australia should definitely be in AFC where they are a competitive team rather than a big fish in a little pond.
