The clock hit zero twice with the US ahead but time kept being put back on (one of which was ordered by someone with literally zero authority to do so) until the Soviets "won" on their third try. Bulls (from South Africa) vs Reds (from Australia. Last game of the regular season before finals.
The Bulls needed to win and score more than 70 points difference in for/against. This is a massive difference in Rugby. Like needing to score 6 goals difference in a single soccer game.
Lo and behold the Reds send a team with 16 new players out of a 22 man squad (including 4 players who had never played a game before), and promptly give away the biggest scoreline in 19 seasons of Super Rugby.
It didn't help that the Reds were one of the poorest teams in the comp, and the Bulls were the 2nd richest.
Its been thought that they were paid to field a C grade team, as the game meant nothing to the bottom placed Reds.

And yes, the NFL pulled out all the stops so that Peyton Manning could retire with another Super Bowl. I think the call on the Jerricho Cotchery catch early in that game set the tone, especially since it set up the Broncos' first touchdown. It was, more than anything else, a game-altering call.
