Why is tennis such a mentally torturous sport?

No matter what physical skills, any weak-willed individual will be eaten alive by tennis. Why? The individual aspect?
>>
>>66345414
>The individual aspect?
yup
it's all on you
>>
>>66345441

That and not being able to mentally/physically "take a point off" so to speak? Just constant increasing pressure?

Murray is an uncharistmatic spoilt brat who hates the country that made him wealthy. Of course he is mentally weak

At least it still has that 1on1 gladiator feel. Players can only blame themself.

False, he did it many times in his younger days.

Miami is full of Spanish losers that like Nadull.

I remember hearing one of the old GOATs (can't remember if Borg or Agassi) saying that tennis is like a 90% mental sport.

well he was talking utter bollocks, it's 90% talent

played tennis as a kid / teenager and the best of our group (made top-100 oslt) was the angriest, always shouting and throwing his racket about

>90% talent

No one is born knowing how to play tennis. To literally be good at this sport, you have to have started at a really early age.

>>66349462

This is usually the norm in women's matches.
>>
>>66349475

no m8, you have to have the talent for it, I can;t become a world class tennis player just by practicing a lot, I need to have the inborn 'gift' for it like with any sport

>>
>>66349495

That's pure bullshit. You can't become a pro if you never played before you were a teen. Talent alone isn't enough, and it sure isn't 90% of being good at the game.

I think its agreed that the top 50 all have the shots available to them, the next step is by being mentally strong.

Murray was able to survive the worst ever Scottish massacre to become one of the world's best. Rafa survived steroid abuse. Federer survived the most boring country in the world. Djokovic survived genocide (probably, he's from that sort of place)
>>
>>66349594

if even I had played before I was a teen I would never be a pro

That's one big thing, there's no clock. You have to play each point until you win or lose, which really grinds you mentally.

I hate having to close out matches when I'm ahead instead of just running out the clock, I always choke...

Can you imagine match point? I can't think of any other sport that has an aspect as mentally unforgiving as a match point.

Imagine you're in a fifth set tiebreak, and your opponent has a match point. If you fuck up that shot and put it into the net, that's it. I can imagine tennis players must have to really train themselves to not think about bad points, otherwise they'd sit up at night mentally torturing themselves thinking about it.

I played high school tennis in burning hot las vegas, I was also the top rated player under 13 as well. I stopped practicing as seriously in high school because I was kinda content just being one of the best on the team, instead of trying to beat the best people in the state.

The game is an absolute grind though, especially when played in the heat. In a 2 set match, the 2nd set is really just a war of attrition. At that point energy is more important than skill, and whoever can put more effort into each individual point will win. It's grueling though, its rough on all of your joints simultaneously and when you're so tired you're basically at a breaking point, you still have points to play and you can't give up the game.
>>
>>66352172

I play tennis and for me it's more stressful to be UP a match point rather than DOWN a match point.

I get really tight when I'm winning.
>>
>>66352317

Yes indeed. It is physically and mentally demanding. I had two 3.5 hour matches, both in the summer.

Won one of them 6-7 7-5 7-5. I was down 0-5 in BOTH of the last two sets and came back, saving tons of match points.

Lost the other one 6-7 7-5 6-7. I had match point at the end but legs cramped and after that I couldn't really move and lost in the TB. Barely made it home, full body cramps. That was the day I learned that just water/gatorade was not enough - needed to add sodium supplements.

>>
>>66345414
man, you have no idea. I cannot begin to imagine what it must be like to play something like a Grand Slam. Imagine being at the match point and THEN fucking it up. How do you not kill yourself at that point?

One of the biggest chokes of all time was Gaudio-Coria in the RG 2004. Coria was the better player and was dominating and was way ahead, but choked on a bunch of match points and then choked the match away. It was really sad. Coria's career never recovered - it broke his mind.

>>66352558
Yeah, but there's some kind of meditation in it. He states facts and is therefore able to overcome the situation. Being able to verbalize his issues made it possible.

Remember that US Open 2011 semifinal? Federer having 2 match points against Djokovic in the fifth at 5-3, the crowd absolutely on Federer's side, and then Djokovic smiles, gives a nod as if to say "I got this" and then doing what was probably the best return in the history of tennis, and then went on to break him, win the semifinal and win in the finals against Rafa.
Imagine how both players must feel in those situations.

>>
>>66352737

LOL
>>
>>66354510

Look Serbbro. I know you gotta side with your boy, but that's not a true telling of the situation.

Djokovic got LUCKY shots, which he himself admitted. He said he closed his eyes and swung because he already figured he'd lost. The smirk was his passive aggressive bullshit against the crowd that he always pulls. "Oh, you're cheering against me, how cute." Then he says to a fan "go fuck your mother" in Serbian but never gets penalties because the umpires can't understand him.

Djokovic is a passive aggressive bitch, in the female sense.

WTA pushfest. Funny thing is, Woz won that match. Zvonareva is one of the biggets chokers/nutjobs in the world.

Wanna see some more great Woz tennis?

Although to be fair, cramps are no joke and when they hit you like that it's pretty much the worst thing ever.
>>

> Why is tennis such a mentally torturous sport?

Because there's no clock. It ain't over, 'til it's over. I think you could say the same about baseball.
>>
>>66355069

True. I guess the big difference is that baseball isn't individual.

But yeah, the lack of clock can be grueling.
