every driver on the grid made at least one silly mistake last year.

and yet people single out pastor, despite the fact that the majority of his incidents were due to other drivers.
>>
>>66337914
it doesn't fit the english language media narrative to acknowledge this

we saw the same thing when perez was at mclaren. several times perez was clearly the faster driver, but Button was given free reign by fans and media to swerve and block and brake check and pretend Perez was too "aggressive" when attempting to pass him
>>
>>66337914

The idea that Pastor is actually a decent driver is typical 4chan contrarianism at its finest. Even in his grand prix winning year, he mostly disappeared for the rest of the season and was arguably outraced by Bruno fucking Senna
>>
>>66338672
so? alonso was "arguably" outraced by trulli for a few years. maldonado significantly improved in the last 2 seasons, shit changes.

You're wrong. I like the ones in the middle row but I don't like the ones in the bottom row (which I think are Alonso, Massa, and then obviously Vettel)

But yeah the ones on the bottom are shit. Alonso's and Massa's have too much going on, terrible colour combinations. And Vettel's looks like it was made in Paint.

The ones in the middle are really good, I really like that sort of tailed parallelogram shape that's on Di Resta's helmet, and on the one in the middle (Maldonado?). It's on Lewis' helmet too and his helmet is fucking based in my opinion (pic related)

He was the world champion last year, that gives him the right to take the number 1 for his car this year. He chose to keep his assigned number 44 instead of the traditional number 1.

His helmet design is reflecting that he is the reigning #1

yvw m8, sorry I thought you were trollin.

drivers taking permanent numbers started in 2014, before that the WDC took the #1 and the numbers 'usually' followed suit with the teams relative finishing position. drivers didn't have numbers that they kept for their careers before 2014.

The FIA has given the driver the choice of keeping their career number or switching to the traditional #1 following their WDC.

Would he have though? I reckon his sense of entitlement would get the better of him, and Merc are better at handling personalities than Ron 'mild autism' Dennis. I rate Alonso with the all time greats, and it would be great to see the two of them go up against one another almost ten years later.

yeah, he even tried to defend that awful quali format. otherwise, I have no problem and he has gotten much better at calling the race the past few years

I suspect that Crofty feels like he is replaceable (he might be) and doesn't want to ruffle the wrong person's feathers. As he gets established, like Martin Brundle is now, I expect he will be more willing to 'call it as he sees it'.

The top ones look awful with the exception of MSC's. They have nothing interesting about them.

At least Vettel's is an homage to MSC's old karting helmet, but even then, his 2015+2016 helmet is much worse than his old creative RB helmets.

So i just saw someone post about this in one of the threads and read people posting stuff like Haas are ahead of McLaren and stuff so i figured i will give you guys a run down on how fast the McLaren actually is.
So we will take Jenson's car for obvious reasons,
This is him and Nico. Mark the laps where Jenson fitted new mediums and was in clean air. It might have something to do with Nico's brake issues but its still encouraging,
Laps 32 to 39. Button caught up to Nasr at 40 and got stuck behind him.
http://en.mclarenf-1.com/index.php?page=chart&gp=956&graf=3&dr1=Jenson%20Button&dr2=Nico%20Rosberg

Now let's take Force India
Perez,
http://en.mclarenf-1.com/index.php?page=chart&gp=956&graf=3&dr1=Jenson%20Button&dr2=Sergio%20Perez
Yes Button fitted new mediums later than Perez but over the course of the race Button was MUCH faster than Perez. Look at the time when Button was running in clean air.
Hulk,
http://en.mclarenf-1.com/index.php?page=chart&gp=956&graf=3&dr1=Jenson%20Button&dr2=Nico%20Hulkenberg
They were more or less neck and neck with Button having superior medium tyre pace.
>>
>>66347738

Haas,
http://en.mclarenf-1.com/index.php?page=chart&gp=956&graf=3&dr1=Jenson%20Button&dr2=Romain%20Grosjean
Nasr,
He got stuck behind Nasr at lap 40,
http://en.mclarenf-1.com/index.php?page=chart&gp=956&graf=3&dr1=Jenson%20Button&dr2=Felipe%20Nasr
Sainz STR,
http://en.mclarenf-1.com/index.php?page=chart&gp=956&graf=3&dr1=Jenson%20Button&dr2=Carlos%20Sainz%20Jr.
Whats to be noted here is both Button and Sainz fitted new mediums within a couple of laps of each other and their race pace on new mediums with equal fuel load was more or less the same. Again laps 32-39 for Jenson was clean air, 41-46 for sainz was clean air.
Now for the big one,
Bottas,
http://en.mclarenf-1.com/index.php?page=chart&gp=956&graf=3&dr1=Jenson%20Button&dr2=Valtteri%20Bottas
Yes Bottas fitted mediums much earlier BUT see how button is slower on SS than Bottas on mediums after the redflag and then once Jenson fits new mediums and gets clean air he starts flying and is much faster than Bottas for the entire last stint and not just when he is in clean air.. Overall McLaren had a MUCH better racepace than Bottas in Australia.
>>
>>66347746

So yeah they have made a HUGE step and i believe this will be the slowest race pace they will have all year and they will improve more than almost everyone else.

>They are faster than FI,Haas,Sauber,Manor,Renault and almost neck and neck with STR. They were faster than one of the Williams (a merc powered) car.

Yes i think the engine still lacks a grunt but they are ahead of Renault right now in peak power but not how the power is delivered. With McLaren's and Honda's $$$$ i believe they will outpace the development rate of FI,STR and Williams and 4th Fastest car is easily doable. RBR is still a tall task but seeing the race pace of Jenson , we can be optimistic. ALonso will be a bit faster than him.
>>
>>66347746
>Sainz STR,

F1 was pretty damn lucky to have a relatively exciting race at all.

If the race had also been a shit MWL fest with no action or drama at all people would have been so outraged. But now everyone has other topics to talk about, how Alonso crashed, Haas, Ferrari pace, tyre strats etc.

I also can't believe that people whose education levels top out at "graduated high school" and have spent their entire adult lives racing cars for a living have to explain to professional businessmen how to run a sport in a slightly less retarded way. Pretty sure F1 is going to Hockenheim this year for the German GP.

Adelaide will never happen. Jerez is pretty shit, Motegi isn't great, Buddh is awesome to drive but was a borefest race every time. I'd rather return to Korea than India if we had to choose from the Tilkedromes

Istanbul Park isn't going to come back ever again either. They should just remake that track in the countryside of some less shitty country in the middle of the woods and mountains Spa/Austria style.

I'd love to see F1 race at Macau for maximum memes.

I would happily drop Catalunya from the calendar, it's a boring race almost exclusively. Shanghai should definitely be dropped as well in favor of Macau or something else in Asia that's less shit.

They aren't feuding at all. Kimi doesn't give half a shit and they're barely friends anyway (which is hilarious in it's own right - being from a tiny 5 million people country and miraculously both have a drive at the same time at the most elite level of motorsport, chances of there being 2 Finnish drivers simultaneously on an F1 grid is like 0.00001% - should you become friends with your fellow countryman? Probably not)

Bottas said in a Finnish interview that they haven't really discussed the crashes and there's no real need to. They are on ok terms and there's no beef. It's not like they hang out together a lot and are best buddies just because they're both Finnish. They seem like vastly different people anyway.

"Beefs" and "feuds" are reserved exclusively for black, brown and American people.

Somewhat. Maybe Bottas is just too autistic though. I don't think he's friends with anyone on the paddock except maybe Massa.

Räikkönen and Häkkinen are friends and Mika famously pretty much gave his seat away and retired to give Kimi a drive at McLaren. I don't know if they're still close but I doubt there's anything bad between them. Häkkinen also manages Bottas and obviously sees something in him.

Mika Salo seems to really hate Kimi or at least his driving and constantly criticizes it. Then again Mika Salo seems to hate being Mika Salo and is ultra bitter because he never won a GP and is totally overshadowed by Häkkinen and Räikkönen as far as Finnish drivers go. I don't even know why he continues to commentate the Finnish broadcast, he just shits on people, constantly makes predictions that prove to be untrue e.g."Oh, he locked up, there goes Hamilton's lap, its over" - 10 seconds later Hamilton sets pole anyway.

Kovalainen is just a chill dude and seems to get along with everybody. Wish they would get him involved as a commentator for the Finnish broadcast instead.

Also a sidenote, but a bit weird how Keke is never at the races anymore now that his son is winning races all the time. He used to be trackside all the time when Nico was younger and there's basically no talk about Nico and Keke anymore.

>I don't think he's friends with anyone on the paddock except maybe Massa.
If anything he seems pretty distant towards Massa, particularly because he keeps expecting Felipe to move aside. Of all the drivers on the grid (aside from maybe the new Manor kids), it looks like Bottas is the one with the fewest on-the-grid friends. He may be Finnish, but even for him, I can't imagine that being fun.

Mika's kinda gone on the offensive against Kimi recently, but that's likely more because Mika's very biased towards Bottas for obvious reasons.

Keke never struck me as someone who really liked F1 outside of the driving. He was always the outsider among the drivers, the last relic of the pre-80s era which had a lot of awful people on the grid (Andretti, Hunt, Lauda etc).

It's a vicious cycle:

This is true, it's a self-defeating business strategy. They need to take a hit now to put the sport more out there in order to attract more people, which will provide a wider audience. A wider audience will bring in more sponsors who will compete with one another, bringing more money to the sport.

Maybe that is a tiny bit extreme but honestly what is the problem with this?

I really don't understand all this memeage of Finns never talking to strangers, being cold, distant, avoiding strangers etc. Why would anyone want it any other way? I've lived in like 4 different countries and people are roughly the same as far as their conversations with strangers go anyway, a bit more open in certain places but even then the differences aren't that huge. Plus wtf, do Americans seriously just start up a random conversation with a stranger on a busstop when its -20, dark and you're waiting to get to work at 7 am?

Small talk is cancer. Why do you need to insist on making conversation with someone you have no reason to be talking to? How fucking annoying would that be if someone came up to me every morning just to ask about my day even though they don't even care and they're just asking because they are uncomfortable with not talking. Jesus christ.

Many cities are just overpopulated shitholes anyway so you actually COUDLNT line up like this even if you really wanted to because there would be 10 sweaty men rubbed up against you in all directions because there's no space anywhere.

Laguna Seca just to see F1 cars crash in that devil's corner Corkscrew.
>>
>>66352274

That track is honestly shit for racing and the corkscrew is probably the most overrated "legendary corner" of all time.

If you've actually watched races there it's mostly a borefest because you literally can't overtake except a divebomb into first or last corner. It's a fun track to drive in sims but it would honestly suck a lot for F1. Not that it will ever happen despite some rumors last year.

>When was the last time you saw the amount of action we had in Q1 or Q2?

>Why do we need to focus on Q3; why throw out Q1?

>Q2 was almost better so why not tweak it a little bit more

This shit again?

Here's what I'd do:
Split quali into 5 periods. Each period gives time for a driver to go out, do a warmup lap, then do several fast laps. 8 minutes would be ok. You can complete laps you start before the session ends.

At the end of each period, kick out 4 cars. Final period decides the top 6.
Times reset at the start of each period of course.

Also, one kind of tyre only (the fastest available).

Yes, the man that that had enough integrity to make his last name easier to pronounce for foreigners. Well, Keijo Rosberg did that for his first name.

JJ got 2 years 4 months conviction involuntary manslaughter, boating under influence and endangering traffic in court. Court of appeal overturned it after he changed his statement and prosecution couldn't prove was JJ or his dead friend on helm. Supreme court denied appeal from prosecution.

Educational part of the story to all prospective racing drivers around. If you slam a small boat with 150hp or so outboard engine to concrete bridge at 40 to 50 knots while drunk as fuck people may die... and you might lose a lucrative post racing career job as result. Concrete bridge wins.

>>
>>66352751

Dude there is a difference. It's not like I (or Finns) in general just sit in silence and never talk to anyone. At work and school, uni, you meet new people and you do talk to them because there is SOMETHING YOU HAVE IN COMMON. If you're classmates then of course you're going to become acquintances and talk to each other.

What I don't get is smalltalk with irrelevant strangers. I'm not going to sit next to someone on the bus and start talking to them about their day because there's no reason to. Of course you can get pretty assburgers with your definition of "irrelevant strangers" which results in people who avoid their neighbours so they don't have to say hi to them but I think people are something of a minority.

Finns do talk to people when there is a need or reason for it. Small talk in the sense of talk that serves no purpose other than to fill the air with noise is what is avoided.

If there is no reason to get close or talk to a person, why do it? I legitimately enjoy being not hassled by other people when commuting etc and I assume most normal people are like this as well.

neither of those circuits are that great, but the aesthetic of old hockenheim almost makes it worth having

imo the tracks f1 doesn't need are barcelona, china, bahrain (which is a decent track), hockenheim, and potentially abu dhabi, COTA, and sochi, the rest are worth keeping for various reasons.

the nurburgring nordschleife would be great for f1, and potentially viable with a small-medium upgrade, i'd like to see how the teams handled something like that. they could do the steilstrecke instead of karussell if the karussell would be too much of an issue

magny cours is great, so we could have that back - paul ricard is shit anyway

which leaves you with 15 races, the perfect number is 16 so with only one spot left its a toss-up between watkins glen and istanbul

It was great to watch the cars go around Old Hockenheim, and Reuben's overtakes in 2000 were shown on TV, just not to the people at the track, and I don't really care about them.
>>
>>66354001
hockenheim and monza are more difficult than monaco and singapore in terms of getting a good laptime because there's less room for error and so many turns with long braking zones have really important exits. monaco and singapore are difficult in terms of you will maybe crash, but there are lots of chances to make up for small mistakes

also the way the cars move around in the corners at monza is really cool with their low downforce.

Hard to say, but at this rate I don't see it getting any better unless Bernie, Todt, the CVC and the entirety of the FIA all get replaced. At least the first one on that list won't last much longer, but then I have no idea who would replace him.

For F1's sake, I hope the old quartet (RAI/MAS/ALO/BUT) don't all leave around the same time. With that and the ridiculous Sky deal, F1 stands to lose a huge portion of its fanbase.

Here's an idea

>Have one "FIA/Formula 1 owned" Team in F1
>Basically like Manor backmarker
>Driver who finishes last out of the two gets relegated to GP2 for the next race
>Driver who finishes first out of the two gets to keep his F1 seat
>winner of GP2 feature race gets the other vacant FIA-F1 seat for the next race
>constant revolving door of rookies who are F1 hopefuls anyway
>greater interest in GP2, higher rewards for winning feature race, greater chance for drivers with perhaps no financial backing to impress in F1

Assumptions here are that GP2 is always before F1 quali (its not0 and GP2 is on every race weekend (it's not)

What could possibly go wrong?? It's literally a perfect idea to bring more EXCITEMENT into F1

I think Button's more likely to retire this year. Massa's said numerous times that he's plenty happy with his current situation, so while I can see him retiring, I don't think it's very likely unless he's slow even with the new nose. The atmosphere at Williams is currently very good for him and he knows that.

Button, on the other hand, has been complaining, being sarcastic and generally not being pleasant in interviews and on team radio quite a bit over the last 2 years, and while this year's car definitely seems better, it's not good enough. His demeanor looks to me like that of a man who's almost fully run out of patience, whereas, say, Alonso's renewed drive to win another championship is likely to beat that.

Eh, I'm as big of a Massafag as one could be and I think he got massively lucky. If it wasn't for Grosjean lucking into a 0-stop race and being brilliant in his defense after the red flag, everyone from Hulkenberg to Palmer would've likely caught him, pushing him way down the order, possibly even outside the points. The car is such a mess at the rear that defending with it looks very difficult at the moment, at least for Massa who is well known to struggle when his car has such issues.

Bottas seemed a hell of a lot faster to me, especially in the first stint on harder tyres. While qualifying as far back as he did was his fault, I don't think he's going to finish behind him very often in the next few races at least.
>>
>>66354348
>Alonso's renewed drive to win another championship is likely to beat that
rumors of him going to Mercedes in a year or two when HAM or ROS leave as well

personally, i don't think that is ever going to happen at all and it's just wishful thinking and people needing something to gossip about.
>>
>>66354481
I bet Mercedes are going to take Bottas or Wehrlein instead if they don't re-sign Rosberg. Alonso's only chance is if Hamilton also leaves, which, to your credit, is pretty likely, but then Mercedes staying dominant for much longer isn't the most likely thing in the world.

Odds are Alonso is going to finish his career with McLaren. For his sake, I hope they get good enough to give him at least another win.

yeah but to be fair he was riding off a good start and a lucky first corner to be fifth then the right tire choice at the red flag, raikkonen dropping out, and STR shooting themselves with track position, he was moving backwards the whole race. meanwhile bottas was on the 3rd last row of the grid cause of a penalty and then had a bad start - he was fighting with the manors in the first corner.

from there bottas could have had a race twice as good as massa's and still finished outside the points, the race itself wasn't really representative of their relative performance

pic related - coming out of t1/t2, massa battling with hamilton, bottas battling with wehrlein

>meanwhile bottas was on the 3rd last row of the grid cause of a penalty and then had a bad start - he was fighting with the manors in the first corner.
Mind you, both of those were his fault, just as how Massa getting a good start was largely through his own skill, so I think those are representative of their relative performance, even if Bottas was the faster of the two after that.

As great as he is for you, I think it's pretty likely that Grosjean will replace Kimi at Ferrari once he retires. Bottas is now out of the question, Red Bull are probably doing their best to secure Ricciardo's contract extension, and while Vergne's still an option as he's Ferrari's current test & third driver, I reckon they would've put him in the second Haas car if they actually cared about him.
