Basketball ratings are always up and down. Its been on the decline for awhile now but people are starting to tune in more now that there is a young up-and-coming superstar in Curry. Once that generational talent enters the NBA, basketball ratings go up. But that should just go without saying. They play in the same arenas though, outselling is impossible when both leagues average the same attendance. And a lot of hockey teams are in Canada (Vancouver, Montreal, probably Toronto , at least 3 more I can't rememeber) along with a huge chunk of hockey's fanbase. NHL is more Canada's thing than America's.
Hockey doesn't even come close to basketball in terms of cultural relevance. People don't play pickup hockey on the weekends, hockey doesn't get referenced in pop music, the average American could name a dozen basketball players but no more than 1 or 2 baseball players. TV and player endorsement deals are also far larger in the NBA than in the NHL.
