Rich people do it because they know they'll get away with it. He won't spend any time in prison.

I never understand this attitude. If you earn millions upon millions of Euros each year, why would you cheap out and risk getting jailed and your image ruined?

Almost all rich people and especially corporations do it, they rarely get any negative blowback from it. Would knowing normiebook paid fuck all tax last year stop you from using it? You probably have it open in a tab right now.

Probably because he didn't know it was illegal. It's most likely that his accountant went to him and said 'Hey, I have this way to save you money on your taxes. And best of all it's completely legal.'
>>
>>65079756
That's definitely not how it happened.

Most of them avoid taxes with loopholes and clever tricks, but plain tax evasion is retarded. Make the punishment something like a year worth of salary or something.

his sentence will most likely be changed to fine only.

He already agreed to change it for a economic fine.

no, jail sentences in Spain are not enforced if they are under 2 years and it is the first one, he accepted 1 year in jail because he won't have to go, and that way he doesn't risks getting anymore

in other news, Victor Valdés is going to Standard de Liege on loan. That poor bastard ruined his career. Apparently the cause he left is he was building himself a very expensive house in Gavà and had to leave because he needed more money. Apparently he is bankrupt now

They weren''t clearly aware they are commiting a fraud. This was a common issue in Spain since the laws weren't clear regarding image rights income (the reason this to sportists massively only in Spain in contrast to other euro countries). You have many such identical instances (Nadal, Casillas, Alonso etc) where the sports person is making huge amounts of money on image rights deals (commercials and such) so their financial advisors propose them to create offshore companies in tax havens (Madeira, Belize etc), do these image rights deals from there and pay tax in there. Their reasoning was: why would you pay 40+% of tax on image rights income in Spain when you can pay 5-10% elsewhere? They didn't thought they were committing a fraud, they didn't hide income, they just reported it elsewhere. After few years, Spanish tax authorities pursue them because to them image rights deals should be taxed in Spain since players are residents there or whatever.

>It's a rich person gets away with tax dodging episode
>>
>>65080044
But this particular issue (image rights income) happens massively only among players in Spain (Nadal, Alonso, Casillas, Mascherano, Messi etc all had this IDENTICAL issue). Because of unclear national laws on image rights, they reported their income in other places.
>>
>>65079503
The sad thing about this is that it's so easy to dodge taxes legally.
>>
>>65080145
It sounds like players are knowingly attempting to illegally circumvent something and are taking the risks.

Do you think these people don't have accountants that don't explicitly give them options and recommendations? Do you think these players are completely oblivious to this sort of stuff?

They just don't care. It doesn't matter, doesn't make them terrible people.

This sort of thing isn't uncommon among wealthy people.
>>
>>65080175
>It sounds like players are knowingly attempting to illegally circumvent something and are taking the risks.
They aren't doing this fully knowing it is illegal. The national laws regarding the issue weren't clear, that's why these issues so frequently happened ONLY in Spain.

>Do you think these people don't have accountants that don't explicitly give them options and recommendations? Do you think these players are completely oblivious to this sort of stuff?
Accountants/financial advisors presented them that option. They don't know laws m8 and big money is in play, they are listening what is being proposed to them. I believe they were warned of the risk that Spanish tax authority could consider it as a fraud and advised to deposit money immediately if they charged them. That's what all of them did, literally deposited sum+interest first thing morning after they charged them.

Just look chronologically, tax evasions for all mentioned players happened almost at the same time period. No one will try to do this trick now after these charges made it clear how Spain will treat it, but at that time they weren't so sure because of unclear laws.
