Bosman ruined every league besides the big ones that always had lodsamone. Porto's run on 2004 was nothing short of a miracle. The whole dutch league, that was once one of the top 3 leagues, is now irrelevant because of it.

They've always been one of the big three, when pro football started in the country they were one of the strongest clubs and have been ever since, just like Benfica and Porto. Obviously as they haven't won a championship in almost 15 years, there are less kids supporting them at this point than there were 15 years ago, but generally speaking most kids are fans of the club their father supports, which is something I'm sure happens everywhere in the world.
I remember when I was in primary school some 15 years ago in central interior Portugal, half the kids in the class were Benfica fans, the other half Sporting fans, and then 1 kid who supported Académica and another one Porto.
Nowadays my cousin goes to the same school and there's only 2 Sporting fans in his class of 20 something students, the rest being Benfica - Porto split like 75%-25%. In my time no one supported Porto in that region of the country, nowadays a lot more people do.
It's generally accepted that Salazar was a Benfica fan. The thing is that there's a myth here that football was corrupted during his time because he always made sure Benfica won everything for his own pleasure, when in reality this didn't happen and Sporting actually had more titles than Benfica during his government.

Sporting have more 2nd places in these last few years than benfica. Benfica has allot of 3rd places and in the last six years they got 3 times 1st place. Sporting got to 1 EL Final + 1 Semi final, Benfica got 2 Finals and 1 Semi final
