There is a lottery that determines who wins the first picks in the draft. And the lower you are in the league table, the bigger change you have winning the lottery.
Besides that I guess the most important thing is that draft picks can be included in trades.

No relegation like in football. All eligible players are drafted in June and the order in which teams pick is essentially determined by how they placed in the season (ie Stanley cup winner picks 30th). However there is a lottery for all teams that didn't make the playoffs for the 1st, and now 2nd and 3rd overall picks and the odds they get the picks are once again determined by their place (last year 30th place Buffalo had a 20%chance to get the 1st overall, with all others having sequentially worst).
Deadmonton is always mentioned because since 2010 they have had FOUR 1st overall picks including 2 back to back and STILL are dogshit. Basically all other 1st OA teams in the last 10 years are now competing or have been competitive for the cup. Edmonton has had 4 1stOA, a 3rd OA and an 11th and can't put together a respectable team. They literally ruin every prospect and future hockey star and they should relocate to Vegas.

They improperly develop their talent by forcing them into the league too early without support and into a cancerous environment. These kids are put up against gilts like Getzlaf, Neal, Chara, etc and get injured time and time again until they are too scared to touch the puck. Meanwhile there are no consequences to hurting these players because no one on Edmonton fights.
Also their fans feel entitled to pick after pick and at this point keep getting excited to lose, it's embarrassing.
Also their management was, until recently, and old boys club made of players from the 80s who were shit at hockey management and one of them killed a guy.

Usually there is a consensus #1 (ie McDavid last year or Matthews his year) but there has been years where there is no clear cut. The most recent example was the 2014 draft where the first 4 were really a toss up and even then it's still up on the air who was the best from that draft. You're embarrassing yourself with this damage control. The WJC does matter and it is a lot of fun to watch, your just bitter we lost. It was clear from the very first game we were not going to medal, this was the natural result. Our goaltending was trash, just like last year, but above that our coaching was GOD awful. We did not progress between games or work on ANY strategy whatsoever. The roster was crazy talented but they were misused constantly (Virtanen shouldn't have been getting ice time) and they never played as a cohesive team. They played like a Jr all star team who were just trying to show off their "sick dangles" then got outclassed by national teams who wanted to win. Plain as that.

It's a great excuse though because every bit of it is true. Your great players in your leagues suck dick when they transition over to the NHL, and same goes for most NHL players when they try to play in your leagues (ie lockout fun). It is a fact that the majority of international players will either not make it in the NHL or take a few years in the AHL to figure out how to play on the smaller ice surface. Where as the American and Canadian players are already there and can jump in a lot quicker, and also have a higher probability to play in the NHL.

Campbell is by far the most underrated dman in the league though. Always has been. Won a cup with Chicago, but his offense went down there and his 7mil contract was too much, so they shipped him off to Florida (which was gm'd by Chicago's previous gm who manufactured their amazing core). His foot speed and smart hockey sense is one of the best in the league, and if his contract wasn't so high he'd probably still be a Hawk.

They don't really have a 1st pairing playing big minutes. The shutdown pair with Mitchell and Petrovic plays with the Huby-Barkov-Jagr line, which gets most of the defensive zone starts. The other two pairs play with the more offensively oriented 2nd and 3rd lines. Ekblad and Kulikov are playing with the 1st PP unit though.
Soupy is an elite puck mover and still very agile. He'd be a perfect mentor for a team like Edmonton whose D have trouble with breakouts. He made Jason Garrison and Tom Gilbert look like top-pairing defensemen.

Non-system babies are the ones who would do well any where they go, regardless of teammates around them. Hossa has proven he can do this. Toews, Keith, and Seabrook are also great enough to fall into this category. Kane is questionable because he has been sheltered by the Toews/Hossa line for a long time. He doesn't typically see minutes against other teams top lines. But as a second line, that gets matched up against other teams bottom three lines, he would be great for anyone. But some teams wouldn't be able to run that scheme, especially when Kane would be their highest paid player. Hjalmarsson is also questionable because he has been sheltered by Keith and Seabrook. He is a great number 3-4 dman though, but I wouldn't want him as my top pairing guy.
