You need to keep the conditions in mind too. SA are basically invincible here, and they do have some top class batsman including probably the best in the world. The way they've contained England today will give them some confidence too, they have good players who have just been playing badly.

In terms of the standard of cricket; this will trigger the statsgook, but Sydney grade cricket is objectively the highest standard of amateur cricket in the world, by far.
Both historically and presently the Australian cricket team IS New South Wales. And obviously all the NSW players play in Sydney. Even the rural bogans like Hazlememe all move to Sydney at quite a young age.
But the standard isn't as good as it was and the gulf between Shield and grade is quite wide now. That's because they ruined the 2nd's competition by making it an U23's comp basically which fucked the pathway.
I was speaking to Kurtis Patterson a couple of years ago. He made a century on debut for NSW at 18yo (youngest ever to do that) but then didn't get a game for awhile and wasn't going anywhere in grade because the standard was a massive drop-off and then he struggled when he got back into the Shield side.

Alright I'll concede that is close to the point, but it is still not quite exactly what Katich was saying.
That is more just inferring that players prefer t20 comps because of the money and because of that don't see the need to play County cricket.
Katich's arguement was that the IPL actually directly overlaps with the English season on the calendar and so therefore by playing IPL you physically are ineligible to participate in County Cricket.
And the point isn't about the money like in that article, it's about the growth of t20 comps. The IPL is getting longer and longer. The BBL will surely expand in size and duration in a couple of years. That is what the discussion is about.
