They are certainly different types of player and I would also give Messi the edge right now on current form and overall in their career. The problem is ronaldo's athleticism is in decline which really stood him out, which was always going to happen and messi is going to take awhile to fade because he doesn't rely on his speed as much as ronaldo does and his game can evolve again, so people just assume that messi has always been better by a distance that are fairly new whereas it's been pretty close in the past
