Just jump in I say. Pick a good team in a so-so league with a decent transfer budget, like Ajax, Shakhtar, or Juventus and then look up some tactics online. Pick a shape you like the look of, sign some players you know irl, then spend a couple of seasons in misery with disappointing results with some minor tactical tweaks, so you can grasp how to create tactics. For one of these good teams you should pick two tactics: one that's broadly counterattacking for away games and one that's broadly possession-based for home games.
I think you learn better from the inside-out rather than trying to read a bunch of stuff and learning outside-in. Use online material as a reference rather than an instruction manual (/trb/ included).
