Where are my Minnesotanons at? Let's talk about this.

http://www.twincities.com/sports/ci_29299421/west-metro-no-current-plans-counter-st-paul

>"We understand there is a plan forthcoming from St. Paul and United," Hennepin County Commissioner Mike Opat said Tuesday. "If that plan doesn't come together, we certainly are interested in talking with United again."

>Even Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges, who balked at United's request for property tax relief, has acknowledged a willingness to revisit a soccer stadium in her city if the St. Paul deal falls through.

Why is Minneapolis so cuck'd? Did they really not expect them to go to St. Paul or what?

MUH DICK
>>
>>64422688
It's all a bit of a dumb idea, but here's what I can come up with:
1) They're partnering with Rayo to say "Look, we've got a LA LIGA team on board with us! We're a big freaking deal!"
2) They probably already had at least some of the groundwork still laid from the original Oklahoma City FC plan which saved time and trouble establishing this new team
3) If I'm remembering correctly, one of the conditions for being D1 in US Soccer is having a team in each time zone: they still don't have one in the Pacific zone, and after Minnesota leaves for the MLS too, that would leave them empty in the Central as well (literally all the other teams apart from Edmonton are in the Eastern time zone)
>>
>>64422688
NASL gets to finish setting up their OKC team after one of the owners bailed to USL, and Rayo gets to piss off their fanbase and confuse Okie emu ranchers.

Larin's career is over if he goes to Tigres. They're known for signing a bunch of youth prospects and not giving them any playing time. Plus, Tigres is stacked on offense. Joffre Guerron, one of their forwards before signing with Cruz Azul, is a national team regular for Ecuador but was a benchwarmer with Tigres. Though if Larin wants an early retirement with good salary, signing with Tigres isnt a bad idea.

I'm working on a custom database for Football Manager 2016 that creates a "traditional" American soccer pyramid
With that in mind, I want your opinions: What would be the best way to implement/organize promotion/relegation in the United States?
inb4 >it'll never work
That's not an option here
If it were to work, how do you think it would work?
>>
>>64433875
MLS: 2-3 teams relegated
NASL: 2-3 teams promoted, 1-2 relegated
US Pro whatever the fuck it's called: 1-2 promoted
>>
>>64433875
Fuck Miles and whoever his U.S. pyramid scouts are for Football Manager. They're ALWAYS missing a ton of teams from the lower leagues. And I'm not just talkin bout regional and state leagues. Even the national leagues at the so-called top of the USASA pyramid: the USL's PDL and the NPSL. I can't even manage >my local team in their games all because Miles and his cronies need a team to play on ESPN or Fox Sports to justify including it in their game.
>>
>>64433875
In order for pro/rel to work right now, in the US, you'd have to take in to account factors outside of league results. You can't be promoted unless you can meet certain standards for the higher league, capital requirements, stadium, attendance things like that. People don't like to talk about it, but as a practical mater you'll need to also consider market size for MLS. Chicago and Philly may be terrible, but the fact remains they are the 3rd and 4th largest media markets in the country. MLS needs them when it goes to negotiate its TV contracts.
>>
>>64433933
Hypothetically, that's logical
Realistically, those leagues would never agree on anything that simple
For one, the talent gap is too huge. For another, money is a mess.
Right now, I'm looking at having the MLS give a chunk of their TV money to the NASL in exchange for the NASL agreeing to pro/rel, because that's the only way I could imagine the NASL accepting their #2 spot in the pyramid, and because that's the only way a newly-promoted NASL team would financially stand a chance in the MLS.

>>64434301
Well yeah, but this can be fixed through the editor, which is what I intend on doing.

>>64434321
How does the rest of the world handle this?
I can't think of a fair comparison because London has a billion teams, so there's no "what if London got relegated"
Rangers got relegated, and it's not like the blue half of Glasgow was suddenly going to support Celtic. Anyone know how this affected the SPL, tv-wise?
In short, I don't know that market size is THAT important, save maybe New York and LA, both of whom will have multiple teams to protect them from this kind of thing.
>>
>>64433875
MLS 32 team 2 team pro/rel, bottom team is automatic relegation, second from bottom plays second from top in second league to determine pro/rel

who cares about the rest
>>
>>64433875
without taking into consideration financial constraints, leagues competing against each other and the semipro/amateur status of some lower leagues:

MLS - 2 teams relegated
NASL - 2 teams promoted, 2 relegated
USL - 2 teams promoted, 4-5 relegated
PDL and NPSL - 2 teams promoted from each league, 1 playoff spot between 3rd place PDL/NPSL team, and 4 teams relegated from each league
USASA - 8 teams promoted, 2 from each region

pretty random idea, but sounds decent
>>
>>64434465
>How does the rest of the world handle this?
Its not as much of a problem for most of them because the country is small, and the sport is big.
>>
>>64433875
You would have to regionalize the entire thing to make sense.

Having a top flight for both the East and the West, and several regional based leagues under that would make the most sense
>>
>West Coastfags won't have christmas for another 5 (FIVE) hours

Yeah, Brazil's probably the closest point of reference in terms of a country of similar geographical spread that's at least got developed infrastructure when it comes to soccer. And Brazil's domestic league(s) is even more of a clusterfuck than the U.S.'s.

Australia and Canada are more like each other, in terms of inhabited cities typically only being located around certain edges of the country (Australia's coast and Canada's border with the U.S.).

Anyone want to give me a crash course on the structure of the Brazilian leagues? I know nothing about them save that they're...unique, to say the least. Weird extra state leagues and all that.
>>
>>64434576
In that case, you would need to implement state leagues. If I'm not mistaken, the best ranked teams from each state league that are not part of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd division get invited to participate in the 4th division. Its a clusterfuck of a situation, especially in some states like Rio and Sao Paulo, that have pro/rel within their state leagues.
>>
>>64434614
You must a real lonely Neckbeard this holiday.
>>
>>64434465
>so there's no "what if London got relegated"
Not only is there that, but a lot of leagues protect their biggest teams. La Liga pretty much gives all of its money to Madrid and Barcelona ensuring they'll never have to worry about losing them to relegation.

Giving each state a league in the US seems silly given how many states we have and how much the population of each varies, but I'm thinking of doing something similar with leagues based on regions. Of course the PDL does the same thing, they just call them "conferences."

>>64434648
Yeah, but that's a self-perpetuating cycle. Madrid and Barcelona out earn every other club BECAUSE they're so popular, and in turn they're able to out spend everyone and constantly stay up.
No club in that MLS is that far ahead in terms of popularity. To be honest, I think any MLS club could get relegated without having much an impact on economics save maybe Galaxy. Even then, as long as LAFC stayed up, I don't think it'd affect the league too badly.

Its not about losing one club, its about the possibility of losing markets. Do you think ESPN or Fox would write as big a check as they did if Garber had to tell them, "hey, we might lose Chicago, but in exchange we'd bring in Sacramento"? Of course not. Pro/rel hurts MLS's bargaining power.
>>
>>64435029
In theory, sure, but I think in practice, it wouldn't make as big a difference as you think. It's not like the entire country is tuning in to see Chicago the way they might in other sports for say the Dallas Cowboys or New York Yankees. Only Chicago cares about Fire. Individually, on their own, the difference between Chicago and Sacramento? Not that big, especially given that Fire are what, the 6th? 7th? most popular sports team in town.
>>
>>64435082
Chicago has a lot of room to grow though, if there was the same level of interest as in say the blackhawks then the Fire theoretically could have one of the biggest wealthiest fanbases in the world, this goes with any huge media market
>>
>>64435106
Theoretically, sure, but it's not going to happen any time soon, and it'd be silly to build your pyramid structure around something that might hypothetically happen 50 years down the line
>>
>>64435145
it kind of makes sense though because MLS is all about holding all the major media markets and that's what generates most of the revenue aside from expansion fees

this is where NASL really falters, their market power and media ability is extremely lower than MLS and not much higher than USL.

I think we need to give it another 10 years before we can talk about pyramid, just let shit grow and expand, MLS is the top league in the US and that won't change for a while
>>
>>64435145
Well the whole point is to grow the sports popularity. You don't want soccer to be, say, the 4th largest sport in the country, then look around and realize you don't have a team in some of the biggest cities.
That goes hand in hand with the fact that making soccer big in Chicago or Philly gets you more people than making soccer big in Sacramento.

>MLS is all about holding all the major media markets

Is it though? We still don't have a team in Miami and we're just now getting Atlanta, but we've had little Kansas City and Columbus since the very beginning.
The reason why seems fairly obvious -that it can be more profitable to face less competition in a smaller market than to be just a blip on the radar in a bigger one.

As for the NASL, well, what do they expect? The MLS was well-established and brings in the big names when the NASL doesn't. Without deeper pockets or some kind of gimmick, how are they ever going to get attention?

That's why, under the model as I envision it, the NASL just reluctantly accepts its role as #2 in exchange for some cash. You sacrifice the chance to be a major league for the opportunity for each club individually to have a chance at being major league.

Realistically, no, we can't talk about pro/rel for a long time, but like I said in my original post, don't tell me it can't happen. That doesn't help me. In my FM universe, it's happening. It's just a matter of how.

It's like sci-fi: if you look at the nitty gritty details, it's impossible, but at the same time, you want enough detail behind it that it seems to be plausible on the surface.

>>64435192
The NFL hasn't been in LA in 20 years and it's doing just fine. Sacramento over Chicago? Probably a loss, but not a huge one. Economics prevents the league from ever becoming entirely mid-markets, and one or two cases of Sacramento instead of Chi Town wouldn't be the end of the world for it.

>>
>>64436004
In other leagues (to the best of my knowledge), reserve teams are just that, completely made up of reserves of a given club. Like Bayern Munich II is all Bayern players.

By all means, if I'm wrong about this, someone correct me.

BSFC are allowed to somewhat make their own signings, the coach brings in some players he likes and the Union bring in some HGPs / who they want, and they link the training and play stile between the two, in a sense it is the reserve team, but not all of the players are realistically considered to be called up and are therefore mostly a USL player than an MLS one

If he does go, that'll be a big loss for Chicago. Transfer fee is rumored to be $4.3M though, which could be used to sign a couple of DP-level players and buy down their salaries. Which might be alright considering that they're really overhauling their roster this season.

Actually, I'm not sure. MLS rules are cryptic enough that I have no idea whether the transfer fee would count as regular money or allocation money, and I think only allocation money can be used to buy down salaries. Well, either way $4.3M should be able to bring in a few quality signings.

Why do you care so much about an MLS reserve league? There's already a team in an authentic grassroots league that anyone can enjoy.

You realize David Stern invented this way of following a sport to get the NBA popular, right? First he sold Bird-Magic as major market stars so those markets would be locked down, then he sold MJ so the whole world could rally around a singular talent, then he insured "a star for every team" once he got the people hooked on that formula. Now it's ingrained in sports culture and it's how many people feel the motivation required to support a team, which of course means they stop feeling motivated when that player leaves/retires.

As for following the league, you attend every local game of course. Follow your team and the league on Facebook (and Twitter if you want) and keep up with the website.

Detroit City FC is the biggest meme team. Their fanbase is like if the Cascadia SJWs and NYCFC hooligans had a baby, but it makes for an entertaining >Polish youth team ultras experience.

You cannot defend LAG's 2015 season. It was absolutely the most despicably underwhelming performance in MLS history. TFC get the pass despite spending similar Garberbucks because they don't have a history of success, but LAG thought they could buy another dynasty and ended up with their franchise in the toilet. It's over, bud, time to bandwagon LAFC now.

MLS teams can and in fact are encouraged to sign young designated players - the salary cap hits for U20 and U23 DPs are $150k and $200k respectively, vs the $436k cap hit for an older DP.

You just haven't heard much about young DPs because they tend to come from the south/central american leagues instead of the big yuro leagues. Old DPs like Slippy G end up being more beneficial for selling jerseys than anything else.

It wasn't even halfway subtle either like "I would like to go to MLS but I'm still enjoying my time in Europe" it was "MLS is below me, I would never play there". Disgusting desu.

Maybe if Rayo gets regulated you can scrap some of their first team. That's if the quit their first regular job.

Most MLS teams still spend more on players than Rayo does

except for the Cosmos, every MLS team outspends every NASL team, despite the salary cap

Ate some waffles and eggs for breakfast. My ass is going to explode.

Cosmos still don't outspent the cheapest team in MLS. They literally have people on $100 a week contracts.

Aren't Orlando entertaining bids for him already?

>>64539736
Orlando would need $9 million to get back any value because Larin is on a adidas contract
>>
>>64539592
Did the author even see Larin's NT performances? Embarrassing.

Marcus Haber, who plays in fucking League One has consistently better performances.

The only reason Larin did so well was due to Orlando's strong Midfield players. Kaka carried his ass all season.
