Since the elementary school until the 8th grade, I was a right hitter. I was right-handed, so I thought it was natural. I got a lot of hits, even inside-the-park homeruns, when I was at the elementary school.
But, when I entered the junior-high, I realized I coudn't hit as far as my seniors. Everyone was big, but I was thin and short. When I was a 7th grader, the bats were too heavy for me to swing. Even when I could hit a ball, it just bounced a little and didn't go so far. [...] I guess I had lost confidence with my batting at that point.
Of course, not being in the game is not a problem with me. There is always something to do, like raking the ground and maintaining the equipments. But, I wanted to be a regular, of course. So, I just had to practice everyday.
It was then when I saw him.
A friend of mine told me about him.
There is always that kind of guy, right? Someone who would tell you all sorts of information. He was really excited. 'There is a player who might hit .400.' He was called Ichiro.
Honestly, my first reaction was 'Who the hell is Ichiro?' There was no way I knew him. I was a local kid in Kagoshima. I watched only Giants games, and was sleeping when the sports news were on TV. I thought it was weird, you know. 'Ichiro' is just a first name, to begin with.
I immediately watched sports news. Seeing the guy hit and run, I was stunned how slim a baseball player can be. I believed that a strong ballplayer has to be big, like Kazuhiro Kiyohara or Hideki Matsui. But, the guy was strong even though he was that thin. He hit further than anyone. He was faster than anyone.
To me, he was a light.
He was that thin, and he was more successful than anyone. At that point, I had given up something just because my body was small, but he gave me some courage.
I can never say things like this any more, but as an ignorant junior high school kid, I thought I could do it if Ichiro can.
I guess I judged it just based on his appearance. `Ichiro does it with his thin body. He can beat big and strong pitchers. He hits tons of hits, homeruns.'
It's like Superman. I even imagined he might be a usual business man in the daytime, and turns to a strong ballplayer at night. I wondered why he can hit more than anybody with the thin body.
I thought I wanted to be a Superman, too. `I am small, but I may become like Ichiro', My brain was telling me. 'I can't become like Kiyohara or Matsui, but I can be Ichiro.' My brain decided so. If Ichiro can hit, I may be able to do it. It mustn't be only me who thought that way. I was just one of the millions of Japanese baseball kids who thought the same way.
I was obsessed with Ichiro. I bought a book with my money for the first time in my life. The book was called 'Everything about Ichiro'. I read it like crazy. I was an 8th grader.
Then, Ichiro came to Kagoshima.
I was a 9th grader then. April 16th, 1996, Kamoike Stadium in Kagoshima. I heard that there would be a Marines-Bluewave game, so I asked my mom for tickets, and went there to see the game with two friends.
I dropped my teeth just watching the fielding practice.
'What a strong arm he has.'
During the game, I saw him catch a right liner sliding, and throw the ball like a lightening. I saw him being run after by the fans after the game. They climbed down to the ground and approached Ichiro, but he ran away. That was also really fast.
He also hit a homer.
I was sitting in a seat right above the first-base dugout. Two hits and a home run. I learned later that the hits were from Hideki Irabu, and the homer was from Toshihide Narumoto. But, it didn't matter to me who pitched. Ichiro clashed the homer to the right, springing the thin body like a rubber, right in front of me.
He was no longer something in the too far away universe.
I saw him that close, and he was a light.

>>64411546
>In his last at-bat of the season, with a chance to be a hero, Ross has a vision of his earlier years, when he was considered always dependable for the team. It inspires him to sacrifice his last chance with a bunt instead so the team can win a game and finish third in its division. Although Ross never reaches the "3,000" milestone, his newfound generosity and attitude gets him inducted into the Hall of Fame. He renames his businesses "Mr. 2,999."
Holy crap thats retarded,
>>64411605
Takes a long period of time of either being elite or well above average
A homerun hitting player can have 4-5 good seasons and mabe rack up over 400 homeruns but it takes someone being consistently productive over the years to get too 3000
Howard would be someone who fits that homerun player mold perfectly
>>64406759
Sisters is the best movie of 2015
>>64411605
Consistency over a long period of time. Players with 3000 hits have long careers with good offensive production throughout it. Some people like to say that it isn't a good milestone because all you need is a lot of at-bats, which in some ways is true but it can still contradict itself. If Hank Aaron had batted .243 throughout his career with the same number of at-bats, he would still be in the 3000 hit club. However, if Hank Aaron were a career .243 hitter, he wouldn't be given that many at-bats. It sort of evens itself out. However, there are cases like Craig Biggio where he never really had an absolutely dominant year offensively, yet he was consistent enough to just get over 3000 hits in his final season. You could argue that he wasn't really Hall of Fame caliber and he just compiled those hits, yet he reached a milestone that not many people have reached in their career.
>>64407129
>Castro
When did that become a thing? Only autistic behavior I've seen is when he has to mess with his eyelid, specifically when it's cold/windy and he literally spits on his hand multiple times and rubs it on his eyelid. This is just due to his eyelid being jacked up.
>>64411724
Biggio earned that HoF spot
He was consistently above average for over 20 years, that in of itself makes him elite
>>64411756
>above average
That was the point I was trying to make. Being "above average" isn't exactly something you would want to put on your resume to be immortalized in a hall with the like of Ruth, Gehrig, and Mantle. Being above average for a long time shouldn't warrant a spot in the Hall of Fame. Biggio's only claim to fame was 3,000 hits, and an argument can be made that those hits were just compiled rather than a show of elite offense.
>>64411796
So what, only players who did something extordanary should be allowed into the HoF? He was a good player year after year, and that's a lot more than most players can claim. How many mediocre players can you name that played 10 years ago?
>>64411796
There are different tiers to the HoF
Biggio is not on the same tier as ruth, clearly
>>64411855
>only player who did something extraordinary should be allowed into the HoF?
Yes.
>He was a good player year after year, and that's a lot more than most players can claim
And? He wasn't a dominant player year after year, just consistent. The Hall of Fame shouldn't be a participation award.
>How many mediocre player can you name that played 10 years ago?
What point does that prove? If a mediocre player averages a 2.0 WAR every year, should we let someone in just because they average 2.5-3.0 every year?
>>64406572
w-where is the dodgers?
>>64411925
He had a 9 war season
>>64411869
That was an extreme example, but my point was that he wasn't a HoF tier player.
>>64411961
>but my point was that he wasn't a HoF tier player.
yes he is, he's just not a top tier example of it he's still a HoF tier player
>>64411959
So did Bret Boone. Having 1 dominant season shouldn't be a lock for the Hall of Fame.
>>64411961
He was better than you
>>64411986
He had one dominant season and the 19 years of consecutive above average play. thats a HoF career
he rated in the top 10 in almost everything throughout that span
>>64411980
Other than his one season with a 9 WAR, and just barely getting over 3000 hits after 20 seasons, what did he accomplish that Hall of Fame worthy?
>>64411941
They're obviously all AL teams. Holy shit.
>>64412003
he had 3 seasons of over 6 war and on top of that he had 20 years of good play
He is a HoF player and if you can't see that, you need to start learning about baseball

He had one 200 hit season, he only batted over .300 four times. The two statistics that he led the league the most in were Plate Appearances and Hit by Pitch. The picture is his 162 game average. Looking at that, I see a guy that I'd like on my team that would be good, not great, offensively and be able to get the job done. I don't see a Hall of Fame caliber player. Just because he was serviceable for 20 years doesn't mean he is one of the All-Time greats. There are people not in the Hall of Fame that were much more dominant than he was.
>>64412089

You actually bring up a compelling argument... I can't say I really disagree with you
>>64412116

>>64412089
>>64412107
here you go
Every other player that amassed 3,000 hits made it to the Hall of Fame, but from Biggio’s detractors, you hear the word “compiler” get thrown around a lot. What they mean by that is Biggio’s 3,000 hits weren’t as much a function of him being one of the game’s truly elite players as they were a function of his longevity. Of course, durability is a skill, too, but the Hall of Fame tends to reward greatness more than it does longevity, as it should. The two put together is what makes you a lock.
So, I wanted to look at Biggio’s peak years, and I wanted to look at the peak years of other Hall of Famers. If there’s a notion that Biggio was never elite, that notion is false. He put up a 9-win season in 1997, and that’s something only 11 other players have done in the last 20 years. His four-year peak, from 1995-98, was worth about +27 WAR, which ranks 56th all-time among position players and is better than the four-year peak of first ballot Hall of Famers like Willie McCovey, Tony Gwynn and Brooks Robinson. Biggio’s numbers are largely a function of his durability, but there’s no mistaking that the greatness was there.

>I don't see a Hall of Fame caliber player. Just because he was serviceable for 20 years doesn't mean he is one of the All-Time greats. There are people not in the Hall of Fame that were much more dominant than he was.

For Brad Lidge, it was Pujols' massive home run in the 2005 NLCS.
For Johan, this must've hurt. He declined after that year.

Interesting. Other Sox fans what do you think?
>>64416608
There are plenty of players that were dominant for a good portion of their career, Biggio isn't one of those players
>>64416611
They would have to offer him an absurd amount of money. I don't think he'd be dumb enough to stay in the division if he left KC.

Not to mention Jeff Kent, Chuck Knoblauch, and Mark Grudzialanek.
>>64416658
Biggio is extremely underrated. 3000 hits, nearly 300 HRs, 7 time all star. I feel like if he played for the Red Sox or Yankess he'd be considered a top 10 all time 2nd baseman.

Way to play it safe. I doubt the same teams from last year all make the post season. There's always a surprise team or 2 every year.
>>64416937
Cardinals and Pirates will regress too and the Cubs have done more to improve their roster than either of those two
>>64416941
Dodgers have had a terrible off season and haven't improved at all.
>>64416947
The cubs look like a complete team. The only bad parts would be there 3-5 starters.
>>64416980
I was actually referring more so to Pittsburgh and St Louis. But everyone doubts the cards and every year they make it.
>>64416959
I know it'll be another tight race but if I had to, I'd put money on the cardinals
>>64416980
They'll get both Maeda and Chen, and they're dominate 2016 with the asian invasion rotation.
>>64417034
Everyone in the cards rotation is questionable. They're outfield is also shady, 1st base, to. Looking at there roster now is kinda ugly. But yeah, they always seem to make the playoffs
>>64417085
Maybe to fulfill pissboys fetish then yes, they will.
>>64417085
The Dodgers already tried that in the mid 90s.
>Hideo Nomo
>Chan Ho Park
Didn't really dominate.
>>64417044
I highly doubt it, they'll regress the most considering their historically high LOB%
They also lost Lackey (FA) and Lynn (TJS). Getting Leake and Wainwright offsets that partly but not completely.
And lastly they lost their best position player last year and have yet to replace him

What do the Yankees have? 3 or 4 former all stars who are in their mid to late 30s...
Yeah, they'll go for that over young controllable ace caliber (one currently, the other a future) starters and two high ceiling OF prospects so we can borrow Trout for a year or two.

>>64417223
There's no need to spend stupidly right now. The best players were free agent pitchers, which the mets have absolutely no need for. They have great bat in Granderson, and a promising rookie in Conforto. So they just plugged in that outfield hole, might be gold glover Lagares. Then you have locked roster spots in d'arnaud, duda, and wright. only thing left is middle infield, which they've shopped for two guys. Its not like some Jose Reyes or Troy Tulowitzki bat was available.
>>64417700
I know. I feel the same way about it. He seems to always start out hot, then his control disappears. Before you know it, it's the middle of the 6th inning and he's thrown 120 pitches with 8 K's and 5 BBs and the score is 2-0.

If he can't tie it together early this season, he'll end up on the block for the trade deadline. Then again, Cleveland has been very lenient with his autistic methods of training and preparation. Other clubs would probably force him to change everything, from prep to mechanics.

>tanking
>in MLB
this is the absolute worst sport to tank in. More times than not, top picks dont even see the majors. This isn't like NBA or MLB, where the top pick is a guaranteed a starting spot. Unless they're waiting until contracts expire.
>>64417802
I think it should be a straight one for one trade. Funny thing about the Todd Frazier trade from Cincinnati was they asked for the damn world in return from Cleveland and ended getting a shitty package in return weeks later
>>64417878
It's because teams know what the Indians have and what they can't afford to lose. So they've got the Tribe between a rock and a hard place. The Reds knew that the Indians didn't want to part with their bigger starters. Can't afford to lose them, but they have a big hole in the lineup and 3rd base. Frazier fills both needs. Chicago has more market flexibility and can still move under financial pressure. Cleveland can't.
>>64417878
It's even rare for Cleveland, at this junction, to have this much talent actually locked up for several seasons. The last time they did, they made some playoff runs and ended up in the WS. The problem then becomes, do you sacrifice your short term multi year window of some playoff runs, or do you risk it all and go all in for one season and have to rebuild for the next 5 or 6 years?
>>64417938
Burn it all for 2016
Fernandez and trout should help
>>64417878
>>64417938
And they have to do it within the next couple years with Brantley on the roster. Once he hits the market, his contract will be too big to handle. He'll end up in either NY, CHI, LA, or BOS, where he will most likely finish his career as a great player with the Indians just being a footnote right beside "*player to be named in CC Sabathia trade with MIL"
>>64417910
Yeah even though everyone knew Cincinnati's asking price would be crazy by any standard. And yeah, Cleveland would be even better if they actually spent money. The swisher and Bourne(to a lesser extent) deals were going to be bad and that's what happened. Another bad thing being the third base free agent market hasn't been good to good either. Chisenhall has like one or to good months then slumps the rest of the season which sucks to watch.
>>64417968
Fernandez? Did he get a cybernetic arm implant during his surgery to ensure he will never get injured again?
>>64417993
Chisenhall will hopefully turn into Alex Gordon 2.0. A former 3B who moved to the OF and revitalized his career. Gotta get more consistent at the plate though.
>>64417938
>>64417987
Also like Toronto, they need to spend now because this window isn't gonna last another 3-4 years since there core players will hit the markets like you said
>>64417999
No player is a guarantee to never get injured again. Do you not think Fernandez is worth the risk?
>>64417987
>>64418017
Maybe. But he has a short leash from what it seems. Also, sucks about Matt laporta, huh?
>>64418023
I'd just be cautious. The Tribe already gambled on Brady Aiken in the draft. He'll either be the next great LHP in the majors, or he'll just be another tale of a former #1 overall pick who didn't make it to the big show because he had TJS at 18 years old.
>>64417538
You say that as if any team has any bargaining chips for Trout
>>64418049
What's LaPorta doing these days anyway? I always thought he'd at least be serviceable. Did he become an insurance salesman or some shit?
>>64418074
I'm not that dense. Trout will be an Angel for eternity. If someone even did have anything close to what they'd want, it would be the Mets entire rotation and a credit card that lets the organization eat at Cracker Barrell forever.

His name: Tupac Shakur

New York Mets
>>64419759
Bryant is not FAR better, he just has more power, and Russell is definitely not better defensively. I know the Cubs just got good but atleast pretend you've been watching more than a season.
>>64419785
the giants
the cardinals
the mets
the cubs
>>64419818
What do the Mariners and Padres have in common though?

Why don't you take all the Ls that the Dodgers took from the Mets?
>>64419876
no bully
>>64419905
27 year bye motherfucker. At least we're not the the second best team in our state.
Sorry guys, I just wanted to see how many (you)s I'd get if I adapted Pissy Memeke's style of posting.

The point is I think we can all agree that the Giants Cubs and Mets are all taking their respective divisions.
>>64420079
Sounds about right.
>>64419836
Bryant wRC+ was 20 points higher, that's FAR better
Russell UZR/150 (20.4) was 8.5 points higher than Crawford's (11.9)
Russell's DRS (10) was half as much as Crawford's (20), despite playing just two fifths of the innings as shortstop that Crawford did (Russell played 471.1, Crawford 1200.1) In other words, Russell save 0.021 runs per inning, while Crawford saved just 0.017 runs per inning. (note: Russell's 2B stats are not included, only his SS stats)
So yeah, Russell is better on defense
>>64419759
>3B: Bryant is far better offensively but Duffy is a little better defensively; Bryant gets the clear edge (unanimous Roty)
True
>SS: Crawford gets the edge, but Russell is slightly better defensibly
Crawford is superior defensively too
> 2B: Close but Panik has the edge on both sides of the ball
True
>1B: This one is right, Rizzo better offensively, about the same defensively
Belt's got a clear edge defensively, Rizzo is better offensively, but not by much.
>Depth: Baez > Tomlinson
Tomlinson is superior offensively and defensively
Giants>Cubs, especially when you take into account Posey.
>>64418954
Giants mariners here
>>64420167
>Crawford is superior defensively too
nope, see >>64420126
>Belt's got a clear edge defensively Rizzo is better offensively, but not by much.
In 2015 Belt was better, but career wise Rizzo is better, no way you can give Belt a clear edge.
>Rizzo is better offensively, but not by much.
With the exception of a .002 point lower BA, Rizzo was better in every category in 2015. This difference isn't as much as Bryant/Duffy, but it's still pretty big. (10 point higher wRC+)
>Tomlinson is superior offensively and defensively
This one is difficult because neither have a full season of experience, but Baez has the far higher ceiling and far more trade value.
So Cubs > Giants
If you include catcher it puts the Giant's over the top, but catcher isn't considered infield.
Mets > Cubs=Giants
>>64420079
Nah, there are still going to be people who pick the Gnats, despite the fact that they are an absolute train wreck in motion and have only gotten worse this offseason.
>You are now reminded that there are real-life human beings who think Dusty Baker will turn the Washington Nationals around.
Both Cubs and Giants are trash what is the discussion?
Bamgarner > Arrieta.

>>64420495
Amen
>>64419735
So what is the argument against him not being in there then? He was one of the cornerstones of the organization for pretty much his entire career. When you refer to the "quality" of a player, what defines that quality? Does he need to be a Roberto Clemente? Does he need championships to cement a legacy? Half the players who are in Cooperstown don't have them. What exactly are you basing the quality on? What criterion has he not met, in your opinion? Are stats irrelevant?

Hoffman>Rivera
J-Just let me have my delusions. I don't have anything else.
Youre not wrong. Hoffman was a better closed than Rivera. And Gangé in his prime was better than both.

Will he finally get into the Hall, bros?
>>64420666
>Craig Fucking Biggio got into the Hall of Fame before Based Edgar
Why are baseball writers so fucking retarded? Is it because Edgar doesn't have 3000 hits?
Hey guys, I have a trivia question
This team had a 56 WS series drought, almost moved twice, and is obsessed with a larger market team that has won more WS than they have.
What team is this?
>>64420685
Edgar didn't field the baseball and Craig did.

doesn't matter that he was one of the greatest hitters in history, despite having terrible eyesight. Baseball writers, mainly NL writers, don't want a DH in the hall.
