NFL has been considering expanding to 7 teams in each division making playoffs for a while now.
I suppose the way that would work is only the 1st seed gets the bye week, and in the wildcard round seed 2 plays seed 7, 3 plays 6, and 4 plays 5

NFL playoff rule change when? Top 8 teams from each conference make the playoffs regardless of division. Winning your division should not guarantee a spot in the playoffs. See NFC south a few years back, now this.
