Neil Walker is a good offensive 2B, he's never been a good defensive 2B, which is a must for that position. He's good enough, better than Murphy, but he's not that great.
Factor in the control, how much he'll make and his back issues, and it's not a steal for the Mets. Not to mention the fact that he's 2 for 31 in the postseason.

Happ has had a shakier track record than Niese, he was solid for 10 games, it's not like he was that consistent for 10 years with the Pirates.
The market was quiet on Alvarez, everyone knew the Pirates were going to offer him a contract, so teams probably didn't offer anything.
Walker is 31 years old and has had back issues, he's playing a position where he'll probably get worse and worse defensively. In return, he got a solid 4th or 5th starter, something they needed.
People criticized the Pirates heavily last year for letting Martin walk, Cervelli did a great job replacing him. They received criticism for replacing Volquez with Burnett, worked out pretty well.
I trust Neal Huntington, I think the Pirates will take a small step back from last season, as far as wins go, but the postseason is what counts. Neil Walker didn't help for shit in that category.

What I'm not happy about is Nutting's refusal to put the money he saved from Burnett/Happ/Alvarez/Walker toward a good and affordable starting pitcher in Kazmir, which is something we DESPERATELY need. Morton AND Locke in one rotation is NOT acceptable, end of story. One of these days ownership is going to have to realize that if we really want to win the division, we can't keep throwing away the first two months of the season by starting with an incomplete team. It's blown up in our face for the past two seasons and it's going to happen again.
99% of the time I'm fully behind the moves the front office makes. I think the majority of the time that they take tons of unearned flack from the public just for making this team better. HOWEVER, the fact that this season will start with Michael fucking Morse as our starting 1B as well as Morton and Locke both in the rotation when we have the payroll space for a proper replacement is not being smart with money. It's being cheap.

I don't see Kazmir leaving Houston nor do I see him fitting how the Pirates pitch.
He's not a ground-ball pitcher, he was actually in the lower half of that stat, and he didn't really pitch that well with Houston last season towards the end. I like Kazmir, and while I think he'd be an upgrade over Locke, the Pirates have Glasnow and Taillon waiting in AAA. There's no guarantee there, but committing to a guy like Kazmir seems risky and not really how the Pirates do business.
I don't think it's a matter of being cheap, it's just a matter of being smart. Once again, results don't really lie. Nutting has had success, he's not going to change very much when the team is being built and put in a position for success. I think he responded by spending more when the Pirates fell off for a 2nd year in a row, he showed commitment by shelling out money for Martin three years ago.
There's not much in the way of first base talent. You could sign Napoli, which would be a pretty lateral move from Morse. You could sign Reynolds, which would be a lateral move from Alvarez. You could trade for Lind, then again do you want to send a mid to high level prospect to the Brewers for an aging player? Moreland wouldn't be a bad pickup, but if Texas wants Diaz, they can go fuck off.
Right now, their starting pitching isn't bad, I like the addition of Niese. All you can hope is Morton bounces back and Locke is less inconsistent. I like Harrison at 2B over Walker, Mercer at SS and Kang at 3B once he's healthy. Cervelli should be back, he and Stewart should be a good combo, plus our outfield. It's a solid lineup, even without Alvarez.

The problem is we need established major league hitting in order to trade a top starter. Bryant, Soler, Baez, etc. They're not established yet, not enough. There's still some risk with them. And prospects just won't get it done like normal. SS is one of the last things we need because we have Lindor. Anything less than some established bats will be a failure. The Cubs have some great pieces but I don't think they have enough track record to justify giving up a starter, unless the Cubs start offering 2 or 3 of their young guys which just gets crazy
