Never played it myself, but my wife's son is really big into it.
This sport is crumbling down just because other countries are so butthurt because we're literally the best.
Same goes with tennis and american/british butthurt.
if this was bigger in the states I would have played it, looks fun as fuck

I wish it was more popular. I played it for about 10 years growing up but then I moved to a bigger city and nobody plays it here.
Can confirm the sport is dirty as fuck though. You can get away with a LOT underwater that the refs can't see well. Punching, getting pulled down with your speedo.. It's all there. I used to stab my finger into guy's armpits to make them flinch and get better position on them.

on the coasts, officials call a lot more drawn fouls, so playing dirty is came upon harder
In the Midwest, it can vary from a wrestling match to some officiating. I have had a teammate get a concussion from getting kicked in the head after a turnover in a transition.
TL;DR yes, and playing girls is awful, claw marks for days
