The Philippines, which we did think they would probably attack, was practically indefensible. The cost of fortifying it correctly would have made fighting a war against Japan a lot more difficult, better to leave and then crush the Japanese.

They weren't bombers. And we didn't. The radar station at Opana Point detected incoming planes, but they assumed it was incoming American bombers. And by that point, the fighters were too close. Even if they recognized that they were Japanese, there would have been practically no time to organize a defense.
In the Philippines, MacArthur had nine fucking hours advance warning because the Japanese hit Pearl Harbor first, and he still wasn't able to organize an effective defense in time. It takes a while to get these things set up.

I think casualties were projected to be around 400,000 American soldiers and 1 million+ Japanese, which is pretty reasonable when you consider how difficult it is to invade Japan and the fanatical resistance American forces already encountered at islands like Iwo Jima. And that's not including all the Japanese civilians who would continue to die from starvation and disease in the meantime. The atomic bombs killed a fraction of that number and ended the war much more quickly.

I'm assuming that you're talking about Marshall's estimate of 31,000 American casualties in the first month alone (not counting any Japanese casualties, which were estimated at 120,000+ IIRC). That was wildly optimistic, none of Truman's other advisors had anything near that low. And the range wasn't 30k to 200k. The highest estimated number of American casualties was from the Army, which estimated 400,000.

And their offers were as absurd and impossible as the terms they offered to the US. Keeping sovereignty over their home territory was just not happening for any of the Axis, the Soviets would have been even less likely to give it to the Japanese than we were.

But Japanese casualties still would have been insanely high if Truman opted for blockade+an extreme version of LeMay's "stone age" plan*. IMO, the whole thing have just ended up collapsing entirely, there wouldn't have been a Japanese government left to surrender to the US.

Not with enough time. The radar station detected those planes less than an hour away, even if they hadn't mistaken them for American planes that's not enough time. MaCarthur had 7 hours warning to defend the Philippines and it made almost no difference in the end.
