Kristaps Porzingis is ELITE. Deal with it. Can shoot the 3, hit the jumper, rebound, block shots, get to the basket and jumps out the gym. He's a hybrid of Malone and Garnett with a dash of Dirk. He's going to be an All-Star this year and most likely the rest of his career. He is a future DPOY and already has shown that he can lead a team and isn't afraid to take the big shots. He's been putting up BETTER numbers than rookie Ewing and is doing it at a better rate and fashion.

Because it's incredibly hard to reasonably quantify how good someone is on defense by stats using a box score? It depends so much on matchups, switches, other players on the team, defensive scheme etc. On offence, you can always go back to the ball going through the basket, you can't do that on defense.
So it comes down to the eye test. He looks really fucking good. Way better than ANY rookie should be on defence.

Blocks and (especially) steals are meme stats that tell you very little about how good a player is on defense. It's very easy to be complete garbage and get steals through gambling and be a massive net negative to your team.
Porzingis will likely be 2nd behind Towns in ROTY, but Porzingis has a ton more long-term upside, as he cuts down on sloppy fouls, plus his jumper, especially 3 shot, will keep improving (jumpshots tend to be the easiest thing for rookies to improve, with almost all NBA players getting better at it, especially Yuros and the longer 3pter).

There are stats that track defensive ability. But they're not in a box score.
They're only available with a subscription. Sports journalists and coaches use them.
Stuff like sport VU, camera tracking, advanced stats. Stuff like that. They can track the% of time a player will close out, what an opponents FG% is against that player that's then broken down by feet from the basket. That stuff fans don't really have access too.
But you can look up a team's defensive rating (which is the amount an opponent scores in 100 possessions) vs when said player is playing and when they're not. This isn't a great barometer, due to bench play and stuff, but is a good indicator.

Even those advanced stats can be deeply misleading, because good defenders do a lot of tough to measure things (e.g. change shots, change the structure of opposition offenses, force switches, get put on better offensive players, stay on their man, good vs bad steals, good fouling etc). You can be a way above-average defender individually without anyone really noticing or it turning up on the stat sheet.
I'm not anti-stats btw, just think that people like to ignore that it's often messy. It's just way way easier to quantify offensive production.
