Martinez is good in these kinds of situation. He reads the game perfectly and he's got the physical strength to win critical duels in the box so it would have been a smart move to have him play upfront in such a stagnant stage of the game. Just look at the super cup game against Chelsea in 2013 the whole preceding season when he was still playing in midfield. Despite his defensive role he had a lot of excellent offensive efforts when the opposing team didn't expect him to go forward.
