Seen him on a talk show here and seemed like a sound lad. Revolutionized rugby, obviously especially the wing. Was an absolute beast of a lad, just some athlete.

>All Blacks great Jonah Lomu has revealed his major ambition is to live long enough to see his two sons turn 21.

>Lomu has to receive dialysis on a regular basis because the kidney transplant that fixed his giant body in 2004 was rejected in 2011. The 40-year-old, who proved such a sensation at the 1995 World Cup in South Africa, and also played in the 1999 tournament in Europe, hopes to receive a second transplant but accepts the odds of his body rejecting the organ are now much greater.

He was the first real superstar in a very sensationalist way of rugby so you decide. Puskas/Pele maybe?
>>
>>63642705
don't have a clue about football, association or american. Probably easier to compare to American because they're more similar, relative, to a really fucking giant and fast running back GOAT

the thing about jonah was that the game was amateur when he started, and training was lesser. He was played on the position for really fast, but usually really small guys with a low workrate. They just had to finish off tries.

He revolutionized it. He was 6'5, fucking huge and really fast. He'd just run right through people and still be the fastest player on the team. Really encouraged people to bulk up the year or two after the World Cup. Led to players like Julian Savea.

He was a complete outlier in that position. Insane.
>>
>>63642705

>>
>>63642705
David Beckham

Had a really good period but overall his reputation plus marketing exceeded his actual production

Like Beckham he never won a World Cup
>>
>>63642705
One of the ones that was a big dude who wasn't very skilled but ran over a ton of people.

He was a big guy who was fast and played in a position that was typically filled by small dudes. So he basically just ran over all the manlets that he was matched up against, often in spectacular fashion. As a result of him the game changed - defence became much more important and the size of the average player increased a lot.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsXTa7UCGlk
>>
>>63642756

Natural causes.
>>
>>63642754
Yeah, he was a literal game changer. Both changed how the game was played on the field and could change the outcome of a game single-handedly.

I met the big guy once, it was at the Halberg awards (annual sports awards show). A bunch of people from my school were helping out and I got to show him to his table. This was when he first got unwell, before his transplant. He could barely walk.

When he got to his table he looked up after sitting down and said 'cheers mate' like I'd done him a huge favor. Really I'd done nothing, just pointed him to a table.

Always made me happy seeing him on TV the last 10 years or so, doing so well. Seemes like such a good guy.Not anymore tho lads. Tough day.

Literally the first and best example of the 'meme' player

I don't think anybody here is old enough to actually have watched him play and while he was very good there is so many guys I would say were better all round wingers than he was. Nobody was better at trampling small French accountants and Englishmen than he was and highlight reel is as good as it gets but overall I think he was iconic on an individual level based on how he looked and his size rather than his skill level.

He ayed when rugby was practically amateur and if you look at his competition there was some absolutely dreadful wingers that he played against

Gonna make me sick watching all the shit people will dribble about him even though they only watched his highlights reel on youtube today

What the fuck did you expect? Everyone winger to be Grant Fox or something? I watched Lomu for most of his career, as early as when he used to play No.8 for Auckland and this no skill meme is literally the shallowest. He was a winger who did his job 10x better than anyone else, you weren't expecting him to to flick passes or meme offloads, his job was to finish.

REKT!!!

FUCK YOU AUSSIES

The thing to remember about the bogan is that their allegiance is not to any particular sport, but to the nation of Australia.

It is for this reason that the Australian bogan gravitates so strongly to the three tent-pole sports of boganism - Cricket, Rugby League and AFL. The bogan gravitates to these sports not because he enjoys, or even understands them. The bogan cares only that Australia is the best, thereby validating the bogan. And where else can the bogan assert that Australia is best, other than on the sporting field, where there is a clear winner and loser.

It is for this reason that the bogan will sometimes be seen supporting the wallabies - albeit often furrowing his brow in a vain attempt to understand the sport of rugby. They can't understand how an Australian team might not be the best in a sport, but they will support the team when the team appears to be on the cusp of establishing themselves as the best in the world, only to promptly decry the sport, and not the team, in the event that Australia should lose. A failure of the national side is a failure of the bogan himself, and the distancing of one's self worth from the worth of the national sporting team would require a degree of metacognition that the bogan is simply not capable of.

So the rest of Australia will continue to humour the bogan, as without them our shipping, construction and minerals industries would grind to a halt. And the television networks will continue to play AFL, rugby league and cricket in order to pacify these puzzling creatures. And every now and again on a humid summer breeze you will hear their cries of ">muh state of origin" and ">muh Warney" and you will know that the Australian economy is in safe hands, at least for the immediate future.

He was moved to wing because of his low work rate. But his speed/size were revolutionary. That's why he's up there with the GOAT wings.

Everyone from the All Blacks in the 90s from Mains to Fitzpatrick don't have a bad word about him, don't feel like they stole their thunder. He was something new.

He didn't have the best ball handling skills, but he was just so good at his memery that he was that good. He deserves to be remembered.

>>
>>63643225
He was a bit of a meme player even back then, he couldn't catch well or kick which were the only things the wingers had to do besides finish tries. Him and Campese changed that position though, Campo when on the blind side would wrap around and act as another half and set others up for tries constantly if he didn't back himself.

Lomu was special in that if he was healthy and had the ball pretty much no one was stopping him. He only started to get shut down when teams literally made it their goal to shut him down. He was the first winger who really could make something out of literally nothing and just go it himself, opposed to just getting the ball after the rest of the backs did all the work.
>>

>for you Jonah
Kia Ora, my name is Davis Lomu.
I’m a 27 year old American Rugger (Rugby fan for you uneducated). I watch and discuss all things Rugby on my tablet, and spend my days perfecting my knowledge and playing superior British Commonwealth games.

I train with my Gilbert every day, this superior ball can cut clean through the air because of the renowned torpedo punt kick and spiral cut-out pass techniques, and is vastly superior to any other ball on earth. I bought my first pair of Rugby "boots" two years ago, and I have been getting better every day.

I speak Kiwi fluently, both the North and the South Island dialects as well as Maori, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about Christchurch history and their earthquake building codes, which I follow 100%.

When I get my New Zealand visa, I am moving to Christchurch to attend the prestigious Christchurch Boys' High School to learn more about their magnificent culture and their illustrious rivalry with Christ's College. I hope I can earn a spot on the school's First XV!

I own several pairs of jandals, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to New Zealand, so I can fit in easier. I bow to my cuzzies and speak Maori as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

Wish me luck in Aotearoa!

Greetings /rug/byunion. Not sure if I'm in the right place or not, but I watched the world cup game this weekend and I have a few questions. Rugby is hardly on television in the United States so we don't get a chance to watch it that much (although it seems most Universities here have a Rugby team). But first, an observation:

This sport is fucking insane.

It reminds me of a childhood game we play on the playground in America called "smear the queer". Yeah, not a real politically correct name, but neither are 12 year olds. The whole point of the game is to tackle the guy with the ball. There's no points or rules or any shit like that, you just attempt to tackle the guy with the ball and if you have the ball you run like hell.

I've spent a decent portion of my life watching American football (NFL) and playing contact sports so I'm familiar with the physicality of it all, but the amount of time that players spend "in the trenches" in Rubgy seems a lot higher.

I have a few quick questions that I hope don't sound too ridiculous:

Maybe I missed something, but when on offense and each player is pitching the ball backwards to their teammates, they never seem to switch direction and pitch the ball the other way. Can you only keep running towards one side of the field?

Why aren't more ball-handlers evading tackles? I noticed that many times it would be 1-on-1 and the ball carrier would just run right into the defender. Why not put a few jukes on the defender?

Can you just kick the ball downfield any time you like? It seems so.

Are there any "plays" that are designed or is it more free-flowing like soccer?

Cheers mates and RIP Jonah Lomu

e All Blacks won the match 39-35.

I always fancied, somehow, that however much Lomu was revered in New Zealand, still we loved him more in Australia. Not just for his ability, but for his humility. He was a man who had every right to swagger, but never did. It seemed odd, and not right, that such a force of nature should suffer from a debilitating kidney disease, but he never complained of it. He just got on with it.

It seems now, downright wrong, that one such as he should die so young.

But what a legacy he leaves behind, and what memories. Jonah Lomu. He changed the way the game was played. He was the most thrilling player not just of his generation, but of all time.

He will be missed.

>talking about pooicide watch

I think this is the most appropriate time to discuss this. If New Zealand had implemented a more thorough degree of pooicide watch then Jonah would still be with us today.

Frankly I'm disappointed. Australians have been giving New Zealanders friendly reminders to be on pooicide watch regularly for a number of years. In exchange for Australia's concern for the wellbeing of their Eastern neighbours, kiwis responded by calling us "Poopeelians", an insult that is as nonsensical as it is offensive.

Australia even took more drastic measures, placing New Zealand immigrants in detention so that they could be informed about the risks they faced when their pacific islander bodies tried to squeeze out a monster dook.

This is the lesson you had to have New Zealand. We can only pray that in future you will not be so foolhardy as to completely ignore your friends, who need you more than anyone, to keep them on pooicide watch.

I grew up in South Africa and some of my first real clear memories are of watching Jonah Lomu run through people in the 1995 world cup. At school the name rang with an almost mythic quality. Him and Pete Sampras were the only foreign people kids would play as (and the Pete Sampras thing might have just me).

When I moved to Australia a couple of years later the first friend I made was a kid from New Zealand. "Are you from New Zealand?" "Yeah" "Do you like rugby" "Yeah" "How good is Jonah Lomu hey" and we were instantly friends.

This is really sad news. The guy was a hero.

>"The night before a game I used to list the two teams, and I said in a team meeting 'there's absolutely nobody I'd swap man for man'. I was doing my motivational talk. I got to the end and Will Greenwood put his hand up and said: 'Clive we're all with you, but on behalf of all the team I think we'd swap Austin Healey for Jonah Lomu'."
