First problem with it is it always treats them as a regular coach or U19 coach so you have to make sure to change it to B team or you'll end up with no staff.
2nd problem is it doesn't seem to understand bonuses properly, for example my B team ass man wants a bonus for the team winning the CL but it won't let me give him even a £1 bonus supposedly because of board restrictions but I assume its something to do with the B team technically being a seperate team and the B team can't qualify for the CL. I suppose its possible the board are just being cunts but it seems very unlikely.

When in doubt, for a general "is this player good" look at the "war" stat (all the way on the right here).
It's "wins above replacement", which is basically a number of wins earned as compared to an average level player in that league. Anything positive is good. A single season value of 5+ is usually "all-star" quality, and a consistent 8+ almost guarantees you entry to the hall of fame.
