I seem to recall learning a while back that the primary reason for this is how "crash" is defined by the people who put those statistics together. In short: many things they call "crashes" are not what you and I would call a "crash", and this thereby skews the statistics to make real airplane crashes (like this one) look less likely to kill you than they really are.

Most accidents take place at takeoff or landing. I think a lot of crashes that take place at takeoff, the pilot can still safely abort before things get too bad.

>>57451767
If I recall correctly, most landing crashes are due to faulty landing gear, which is a problem good pilots are generally equipped to deal with. Very rarely does a plane just stop working properly 30,000 feet in the air.

Aircraft accident means an occurrence associated with the operation of an aircraft which takes place between the time any person boards the aircraft with the intention of flight and all such persons have disembarked, and in which any person suffers death or serious injury, or in which the aircraft receives substantial damage. For purposes of this part, the definition of “aircraft accident” includes “unmanned aircraft accident,” as defined herein.

people are so irrational about these things.
>>
>>57451934
Oh wow. Good on the pilot for putting it in the drink instead of crashing into the road.

>>57451937
Some say that the pilot's reaction was very basic, or that the plane lost lift in the left wing, causing the turn.
>>
>>57451944
I don't think so. News is a bit sketchy. There are survivors though, so we can attribute that to the pilot for now.
>>
>>57451941
No kidding, that was some serious flying. He was dropping like a rock and as soon as he banked to make the water he lost what little lift he had. A few seconds earlier and he would have hit the bridge head on, a few seconds later and he would have missed. At least that's what it looked like to me.
>>
>>57451941
Basques are always a question mark

There is a chance that something blew up at altitude but didn't completely blow up the plane...

But overall I think it's <5% chance of terrorism.

Happening threads are the lifeblood of /sp/ and what made /sp/ great.

I'm not some outlaw faggot, but as long as it's a one off event like a plane crash or an invasion, in my opinion it should be allowed to stay.

I wonder if he is confusing "seven times as likely to be struck" and "more likely to be struck seven times". There is a massive difference.

Not really. You cannot control the actions of others drivers. Go watch that video of the nuns in a car that was hit by an oncoming car. They did everything right and correct. Didn't matter one bit

You don't know enough about the incredible safety mechanisms and safety measures airplanes employ.

>>57452138
take comfort in the fact that it is by far the safest form of travel. If I feel stressed on a plane, I just ask myself why I'm not a nervous wreck while driving a car, and then I remember my emotions are stupid.

You know the funny thing about it?

I actually considered flying to Nizza with German Wings, thanks to following bargain.
It would have been my suicide trip anyways.

Topkek, would have spared me the work to do it myself.
>>
>>57452145
Don't sweat it. Engine failures on takeoff are critically dangerous and so commercial airliners are designed to withstand them and pilots train engine-failure-on-takeoff scenarios all the time in the simulator.

Yes, pilots train this maneuver all the time. And one reason these are trained in the simulator is because they are dangerous to train in the airplane. The only hull loss at ExpressJet airlines occurred while training this maneuver in Beaumont, TX. So....

I'm sorry, but did the people already die? Oh, that's right. The bodies weren't even found yet. In fact, the plane still might be flying. Does not landing a plane on shedule count as a crash? Is that what you're saying? Because if you're saying that I can assure you that you're wrong. Why would you make this topic when the plane still hasnt been found? The French are still searching for the plane right now and they have been the best country at rescueing dead bodies for how many years now? They're looking for one of the best planes in the world who just happens to have a small delay because of a secret investiation of a criminal flight guest . But you know what? They may still fucking live. The French are one of the bravest fucking people in the world, they went 2-0 in World Wars so far and would of won the world dominance in their leader wouldn't have been a manlet. Maybe you should shut the fuck up before you make retarded topics like this. You know why? Because you're going to be embarrassed when the big guys get off the plane and someone bumps this topic. Are you a fucking drunk? Are you retarded? Are you autistic? You are a fucking idiot and you should never make a topic on this board again and I'm fucking serious. I almost have a feeling you're the only guy making all these Bane topics because you're a faggot hater who doesn't like the movie because it's literal peotry. Fuck you, be good at something in YOUR life and then maybe try to troll these fucking people on the 4chan, like I give a fuck. It's so easy to spot out your threads now, you're a retard. Always doing stupid shit like this. Why don't you try to be a good poster? Just for once? For once in your fucking life try not to make a topic like this. That's just you, you're always right at getting it wrong. Fuck you. You are nothing.

Mechanical engineer here, close enough I guess. The ATR-72 is capable of dumping fuel, but as the plane had just taken off they probably wouldn't be given authority to dump fuel that low.

Do you have a source for that? I'd imagine on a plane whose MTOW and MLW are so close together that the plane wouldn't be equipped to dump. I didn't see anything on the overhead either.
>>
>>57452194
First class armchair pilot, concur that it would not be advisable to bother with dumping fuel if decent rate is faster then gliding rate, with incoming metro area's or no clear ''fall path''.

From the livestream, they reported that the taxi driver and the female passenger suffered mild injuries and are in the hospital- mostly scratches and a head injury on the driver, from what I've heard.
>>
>>57452208
Could be mild whiplash or laceration or face ripped off or turned into vegetable or just banged up and bruised... Any one of those is survivable and could be "stable".

If you are asking about the bagram crash that was a cargo plane.

>>57452260
some military equipment (tanks I think) broke loose on take off and rolled to the rear of the plane which totally messed up the weight distribution and made the plane impossible to control and a crash inevitable.
