I want a tattoo, but I can't think of what to get and I don't want to just get something on a whim like so many do. Where do people usually get ideas?

Lots of places, really. If your interest is the aesthetic/artistic one (that's the reason why I like Japanese traditional so much) you can look into photography or art books of the style. If you want something with a personal meaning behind, get the imagery that has a significance for you and discuss it with an artist. Just avoid browsing stuff like pinterest for tattoos, that's just a bunch of people copy pasting the exact same stuff onto their skin

Honestly it depends of the artist, some are so good that even if you're skinny they can draw some pretty good stuff on small/skinny arms too !
