'Taste' Is a perceived concept, it's the norm, a stereotype. Everyone has their own 'taste' which is what makes us human, it makes us normal. The people that follow the trends religiously to 'fit in' because they believe it will make them look better in others eyes usually fail.
Girls will want to meet the real you, and not some fake person. But you should still let the defenses down and try something new, this allows them to see you, and not the walls you've built.

The market would pretty much regulate itself tho. They can't fuck with the customers, because guess what, they won't have any customers then. Just take a look at places where the government regulated EVERYTHING - export, import. They did not survive, because a company as large as the government can't really see how much food / clothing/ etc. is needed.
Many small corperations can tho. If noone is buying their shit, there is no need for their items atm, and they die.
And think about the opportunities- if you, as a person, can see a demand of a specific item in the population, you can "easily" start importing these items if you want to make "some" cash.

And the market doesn't regulate itself. An Apple phone cost to much for it's value. The other companies aren't even lowering their prices, they adjust their to apple prices.

The transition happend because of the georgian kings. Especially George I. had to get his shit together in Hanover. And I wouldn't count Alfred as a british king. (Actually everybody before the Georges would be just an english and not a british king) Alfred was anglo-saxonic and he probably could still hold a conversation his saxon continental friends which just got integrated in the frankish empire.
