If you're creating a chat type client something like meteor will be good (I just finished a rewrite of an app I built - http://tab.bz). Would recommend just using websockets and some nice js libs instead (npm and browserify are your friends here) unless you want something up real fast.
PHP is actually fine for a backend nowadays, it just doesn't have the community of the node ecosystem. Also you should use postgres over mysql, there's no reason not to.
