How long would a helicopter have to hover in the air for before the earth starts moving beneath it?

That would be impossible.

Not baiting. If you're riding a skateboard and someone picks you up off that skateboard, the skateboard would keep going but you would stop.

Same principle.
>>
about as long as a balloon

We're dealing with a planet here, the helicopter is spinning with the earth. No amount of hovering is going to make the helicopter suddenly not spin with the earth.

What I'd you hover a distance from the earth equal to the distance from earth to Pluto?
>>
>>8164774
You'd have a helicopter floating in space.
>>
>>8164774
You'd still be geosynchronous
>>
>>8164757
The helicopter is hovering in the atmosphere and the atmosphere is moving with the surface of the Earth. The winds aloft would have far more of an effect on where the helicopter goes than the rotation of the Earth
>>
>>8164757
Suppose the wind speed relative to the ground was zero.

As soon as the helicopter stops rotating with the earth the air (which it wouldn't unless the pilot accelerated in that direction first) would create a (very small) pressure gradient which accelerates the helicopter again untill it's rotating with the earth.

Holy shit you're dumb. The key component that you're neglecting here is gravity. The difference in gravitational pull between a human and the Earth is much greater than a human and a skateboard. Even when a helicopter is in the air the Earth is pulling it towards the center of mass, if we ignore gravitational effects then eventually the Earth will move away from the helicopter, as well as everything on the planet.

If you were out near Pluto then the gravitational pull from Earth would be very weak, therefore you would have a tendency to move towards whatever object is closer and has a larger gravitational influence, which would cause your position in reference to the Earth to shift

The air has a much larger effect on the helicopter than the earth moving below it, so never in a practical example.

If you take the atmosphere out of the equation, then it would be instant. and the higher it hovers, the faster the earth would move below it.
There is no longer anything to keep the helicopter moving with the earth, and a lower orbit will move faster relative to a higher one. They both keep the same velocity, bit the helicopter takes a slower path around earth.
