Why are freshman physics textbooks 1000+ pages long?

Why are these niggers so verbose?

I don't get it, you spend more time reading through the bullshit then actually getting to the topic.

Because many students need the hand holding not to fail since it's their first real problem solving class. You can always read Kleppner & Kolenkow or Purcell & Morin if you want something to the point and more intense.
>>
Because they usually have a lot of questions/exercises.

Read landau & lifshitz if you want to understand why being verbose is helpful to all but the most gifted students.

Because freshmen gotta learn a lot. They know nothing yet, so of course their books must contain more information than the texts for higher students.

1) Broader topics ranging from mechanics, E&M, Thermo, and modern physics

2) more pages for examples, figures, and problems because freshman physics class probably has 1000 students and prof doesn't want to write his own questions

3) Mo' pages, mo' money

A good guideline for intro textbooks is anything from 1960's-80's probably does a better job as a pedagogical text than anything recent
