I'm retarded and so the only way I do well academically is through hours of study. How do you guys manage?
For me:
>Do it early in the morning after a high fat, high protein, medium complex carb breakfast
>Don't use loads of caffeine, just green tea, 3 cups a day maximum
>Instrumental electronic music ie Tycho or Fat Jon
>Slightly boring but interesting podcasts like EconTalk, ONLY IF THE MATERIAL IS EASY AND DOESN'T REQUIRE MUCH FOCUS
>Hourly breaks where you take a quick walk up and down some stairs
>After a couple hours go for a long walk
>Shittonnes of past papers/problems (most important one)

Finally, just do it. Just sit your ass down and study. There isn't any trick to make you more motivated, just push through.

music is weird how it works. I listen to classical, and when a fast tempo song like

I don't study because I have a superior IQ and can understand everything as soon as I hear it. Studying is for brainlets.

How to push through the daily burnout? I'm trying to study efficiently at longer hours but after a point I can't help but start to mind wander.
>>
>>8062043
Take lots of 15 minute breaks during study, and use that time for something you enjoy.

You'll have lower stress and higher memory retention.

Only tryhards actually study for like 10 hours straight.
>>
>>8060515
This.
>>
>>8060627
THIS.
>>
Honestly, if you're studying for hours and hours you are studying the complete wrong way for retention and learning to occur. You should try and read as much background material before classes/lectures so you get a good overall of the subject, take good notes during class then summarise your notes straight away after. I also find talking to classmates or lecturers like I'm dumb and basically rephrasing key points in simple speak helps to gel it all in my head. If you set out maybe an hour or two a day to reread your notes and understand them you'll do fine. Obviously this is all preventative, when I haven't been paying attention and have to cram I just constantly rewrite notes over and over, eventually getting them to a bullet point list with key phrases that act as prompts. Some people learn better by talking or listening to things, though.
>>
>>8062227
Only reason I am (trying to, don't succeed most days) to study 10-12 hours per day is because I have entrance exams in one month, getting a full ride out of this shithole filthy fucking country
By the way, any advice to stay alive for one more month and study better?
>>
>>8062989
Grab a friend / pretend you're having a conversation with someone and talk like you are teaching them the material. Never fails to help me remember more efficiently
>>
I don't get people who read notes. I just do problems until I'm good at them.
>>
>>8062989
A lot of good, whole food, time outside, study breaks and sleep. Without being fully rested you won't learn. I know it sounds childish but I also like scheduling my study time - specifically setting out an hour just for questions on one area, an hour general reading/note taking etc. Good luck anon, I'm sure it will all pay off!
>>
>>8063846
Instead of hourly breaks I just set goals, i.e. do half a paper, 15 minutes of shitposting, finish the paper, 20 minutes of shitposting, half of another paper etc
>>

>>
>>8060515
How am I supposed to block out the noise then
>>
>>8060515
>>8060744
idk, if you have a noisy area like traffic and people outside regularly talking

and you contrast it to repetitive or calm music without a lot of variation (and no vocals)

then the music could block out the irregular outside sounds and keep you in a more regular environment that does not break your concentration.

> Focused on work, cut internet while working on computer, download every pdf and all before so I'm not going to stop everytime to get the next document.

If I'm too nervous about the exam and/or I don't know much :
> Sleep in the afternoon, 4-5 hours
> Wake up, whole night of studying
> 4-6am to 9-10 get some sleep
> Go back studying

Note that I've taken a lot of time to learn to memorize efficiently, since I'm a lazy fat-ass, I need to study faster and better than others.
Note (x2) that this only works for knowledge-based lessons (I study human science so works for me), not practice, you can go faster than your own brain when understand something like physics or math.

But I tend to begin my day with some funky stuff, it makes me motivated while happy, then I use the burst of energy with jazz, the whole day. I could do from 8am to 10pm with 15min breaks.

example of funky stuff I listen to in the morning while in the subway (+/- 40 min for an album)

Don't let school cuck you to the point where you're studying and stressing all the time. Have other hobbies like working out and balance them with studying. Study a few hours a day then stop. The only time you will have to study a shitload of hours straight is if you let everything for last minute.

My classmates always take school super seriously and stress about a 4.0 all the time, they study for hours and hours weeks before exams. I'll never understand that mentality. I guess I'm fortunate that I have to study less than them.

i read about it once but i didnt like the mentality it promoted

i see it like this:
a) i have a good enough memory already, and its worked for me just fine my whole life, i dont need some animu powerup technique to succeed

b) encouraging rote memorization is a mistake that will only cost me in the long run (like cheating)

c) its better to just learn and understand the material sufficiently enough that i dont need to specifically dedicate time towards retaining it, ie it should come naturally

That said for trash courses where literally all you can do to succeed is memorize everything by rote, sure go for it.

Most of medical school is a waste of time. Even the clinical stuff. Hey buddy it's time to spend 3 months doing a surgical rotation where you literally stand at the foot of a patient bed during surgery for 9 hours a day, learning nothing because you can't even see what's happening! And if you don't appear to enjoy it your grades will take a hit due to lack of "engagement." To say nothing of the fact that you spend most of your time on rotations that don't interest you in the least, learning shit you'll eventually forget. It should be a 2 year thing, but then it'd cost 100,000$ less.

What exactly do you mean by this? I am an extremely unmotivated person, meaning that I never feel like doing anything, but I just force myself to work out, eat healthy and study a lot, and have been doing this for years.

Looks like you didn't really read my post.

I like learning.

I can't think of a single time in my life where I've felt this so-called motivation to do something, with the exception of fulfilling basic needs.

Just so we're clear, I define motivation non-rigorously as an emotional drive to do something. I've never had this, and no, I'm not schizophrenic or psychopathic, and I'm not a sperg, I am fully capable of experiencing normal human feelings.
>>
>>8072091
I'm a CS nerd who feels similar. I enjoy learning (though I've slowed lately as I've become a bit confused which direction to head). Community college was easy as shit but I didn't want to get a transfer degree for CS when I had covered 10x the course material so far on my own so I stopped. I haven't written code aside from assignments pretty much ever.

Just adding that I have no clue what motivation feels like either. I paid attention, read the material, did no study that wasn't turned in, and passed all of the tests flawlessly. I assumed I'd find problems that I enjoy working on when I acquired more skills, and that never happened.
>>
where can i get in some decent practice with just difficult simplifications? the stuff that trips me up the most in my math classes is simple algebra stuff; getting a coefficient wrong, or miswriting a complicated expression, and then everything i do from that point ends up wrong
>>
>>8069624
>What did the test cover
The test covered linear systems of first order differential equations, matrix algebra like determinants, inverses, transposes etc., orthogonal spaces, eigenvectors and eigenvalues, vector spaces, Markov chains and least squares. The problems were a mix of calculations and proofs

>how did you do it?
At first I tried getting the bigger picture but there was just so many theorems that were so related that I got overwhelmed in a sea of definitions and theorems that was hard to really visualise and get a "feel" for, so I did it the hard way and opened up my book at chapter 1.1 and read through the whole fucking thing (well, the parts that could come up on the test anyways, I posted the class material earlier in the thread) and wrote down every single theorem, definition, remark etc. but in my own words and if I didn't understand it right away (which was the case for like 90% of it) I would not skip it but rather just hammer it until I fucking understood it, at some points literally reading every single word out loud and tracking the words with my finger. But anyways, the important bit is I didn't just copy the things I read, I explained in my words and in simple enough language to where I could understand it. All of it, every single little detail.

I then picked a previous exam at random (got one from 2010) and worked through it. Would've gotten an A on that so I decided I was prepared enough and that I'd get to sleep and be well rested for the exam, which I was. So yeah that's pretty much it.

Whats the best way to check workings in exams?

I once lost quite a few marks in an exam by thinking that 28/2 was 19 early in a question, but when checking I just skipped over it. To illustrate my point, count the number of letter f's in pic related. The answer is 15^0.66, but the chances are that you just glanced over a lot of them. That sort of 'glancing' (reading but not /really/ reading..) is what I want to tackle.

so ive basically been a husk of a person due to medication this entire academic year, finally got off it and ive been doing all the work i should have been doing in the space of a couple of weeks. ive just looked at some past papers for two of my exams and im absolutely scared shitless, ive got about 10 days to learn an entire module (200 hours of study)

im scared fucking shitless, anyone been in a similar situation?
>>
>>8074547
>anyone been in a similar situation?
In a similar situation now. Except I lost the time to health problems and have 4 days to go. Working 15 hour days. Even though my willpower feels decent I still waste 15 mins here and there, which feels awful. Trying to get faster at the non-work things like making and eating food and studying while I do it. Only at the end of the day do I shitpost to de-excite the brain for sleep.

>im scared fucking shitless
me too, there's a real chunk of chance I'll just drop dead of a heart attack from this shit.

Good luck mate anyway.

I'm having Math,Phy,Chem exams in exactly one month. I think I'm good on maths but I'm barely finishing classical mechanics, and have fucking no clue on chemistry. If I pass all three and suck dick on the interview I get a full ride scholarship to any university I can get into in Japan, this could save my 3rd world broke ass.

But I'm nervous, depressed, I really want to kill myself and I can't pull 10h days without seriously considering suicide. Any help?
Maybe try to go to the public library in the weekdays (not open on weekends) and what else? Fuck I'm really nervous and shaking a lot.

People go insane from studying too much, I don't see much of a point. If it's mathematics, just pay attention in class and think about it. If it's engineering, pay attention and take notes on the important points. Read this over once before the test to remind yourself. If it's something memorization-based, short-term memory is always better; drill it into your head one to three days before and you're good. Make mnemonics and do something active with your hands so you don't drift off.

I have it as a second major and really enjoy it. Making it your only major is a bad idea even if your program is excellent; find something else to complement it.

Hey i feel you bro fuck them
>>
>>8075219
I think people go insane from ignoring their other psychological needs such as socializing with other people also physical needs at times ( sleep, nutrition, exercise ). You gotta have some relief, but you can still study quite a bit.
>>
>>8075219
I actually enjoy studying maths and hate everything else. I'm doing CS and spend 90% of my time revising for my elective pure maths module just because it's so damn fun
>>
>>8068331
Fancy stuff motivates me.

I bought some fancy pencils and they got me going.

If you aren't constantly pushing the pencil with my math class you miss the notes needed for exam + lose participation grade.

I never get to think about shit in class.

There's that pomodoro technique, the thing where you study for 25 minutes and take a 5 minute break. Some on /sci/ will tell you it's a waste of time. Here's how to use the technique, and make sure it will actually work:

Study for 25 minutes, then go walk around, up and down stairs, do jumping jacks or whatever, for a couple of minutes. The physical activity will force you into an alert state. Return to your studies.

Don't just say "sure I'll do timed breaks" without specifying. Start a timer on your phone. Whenever you start goofing off, glance at your phone to realize your 25 minutes aren't up and then force yourself back on your studies. Develop a nice pavlovian reaction to that timer.

Have fun in Tokyo.

Should I bother finishing my degree anons? I don't even have a clue what I want to do with it. Biochemfag here.

I'm studying Chemistry too, friend. Physics is more interesting though.

I don't even know man. I graduate next Spring and don't have a clue. I can't even work in a hospital because that requires special certification. I have no lab experience, and am not really sure I even want to do research.

Got just over a week to go and I'm so fucking burnt out lads. Only two exams thankfully

I'm a no-previous-math-experiencefag and reading through baby Rudin. Many proofs seem complex to understand and for sure impossible to recreate after a few days.

Which approach would you recommend:
a) memorize whole proofs by heart,
b) memorize what are they about,
c) understand and move on,
to get as much as I should aiming to learn UG math.

What level of QM is it?
>>

Use these, you shouldn't memorise every step but you should remember milestones, the general idea of the theory and understand it's implication

It's my first course of QM. Basically the course ends with the construction of the hydrogen atom.

I would love to miss class so dearly at times with my sleep deprivation but all the shit is required and you don't learn there anyway.

I know this varies a lot, but how much studying time should I aim for every day? I have about 2 weeks until big tests/exams start, having about 2 per week for a month. Subjects are physics/maths (differential equations, electromagnetism, statistics) and compsci stuff (compilers, software engineering). I don't want to study too little but I don't want to get burnt out either. Help?

Daily reminder that if you aren't going for a Master's your grades don't matter after 4 years of work. Even then, they only matter enough to get into a Master's program

>all the work and stress you've been putting on for years will be meaningless
>employers wont give a fuck if you graduated with highest honors
>noone gives a fuck about honors classes unless you are going to med/law school

And this is why I stopped giving a fuck and my grades are slowly going towards a 3

Because of the growing gender gap and lack of compliance to UN resolutions, what is the possibility for those Chinese scientists to eventually successfully genetically mass-producing "perfect" women?(height, hair color, eye color, eye shape, face shape, age degradation, personality, etc.) Pic possibly related.
