They quit or are fired on their first burnout.

If you do peasant stuff in software (programming, testing, QA, etc.) you will be fired. If you go into management you are safer.
If you are a scientist you will probably be pretty broke at 40, but hopefully now have gotten tenure, so the only way forward is up.
If you are a scientist in industry you should be doing pretty well.

All this is from my own hard earned experience.

>All this is from my own hard earned experience.

So by your 40s you were a software developer, tester and QA, an academia scientist and an industry scientist all at the same time?

Well, that's a good fucking record.

We're right here, kid. Now get off my lawn.

The peasant stuff in software is raking in big bucks in Silicon Valley & Seattle. People whom I would describe as complete and utter retards are getting six figure jobs.

You...

You mean my colleagues?

>Looks around room
>retirement-ready people errywhere

The answer is: "Not in startups" because 40+ year old people have children and mortgages so they cannot bet on the startup success story and hope for billions, they have to settle for the $100k steady, but there are plenty of steady companies with older programmers.
