Except audio engineering isn't engineering. Acoustic engineering would be but I don't think he's interested in that.

Trust your ears. Fuck a scientific method.
Fuck Sylenth preset surfers.
Start with subtractive synthesis. It's easy and still gives you enough role to hang yourself with. Then move on to additive (FM, phase distortion, etc.).
Pick one synthesizer and master it. Tons of people get gearlust, buy way too many synths, and don't know any of them in depth. Follow along with YouTube tutorials on that synth.
Once you start getting the hang of synthesis, try recreating patches from tracks that you like. Try layering multiple patches.
Fuck Sylenth preset surfers.
Listen to soundtracks. For me, writing for film/games is harder than a priest in a nursery.
Don't use Vengeance Sample Packs. They're cheesy, over-used, and over-compressed.
Spend more time making music than reading and talking about making music.
Fuck Sylenth preset surfers.

audio engineering isn't engineering

For synths, I'd pick Synth1. It's free and there's a ton of documentation out there. Stay away from Massive, FM8, Razer, and the rest of the popular "pro" synths for now. They've got a ton of bells and whistles you won't even touch for a long time.
What DAW are you using?

FL studio.

I haven't spent any appreciable time with FL, but the workflow seems really fluid once you're adept.

thanks bro.
I rather learn the foundamentals and make my own shit I have in my mind than wasting time browsing a million presets.
