Biology is science right?

I just smoked some weed and realsied my mum and dad have brown eyes but I have blue eyes, is my dad really my dad or did my mum fuck some dude with blues eyes.

They broke up when I was young because they were always fighting, were they fighting over my mum cheating or something?

I love my dad though and he is awesome but I'm curious.
>>
blue eyes are a recessive gene, my grandma has blue eyes yet none of her children and grandchildren have blue eyes

My entire mums side of the family has brown eyes same with my dad

You could always ask.

I'm in the same boat sort of, but instead of eye color it's blood type.

Blue is recessive. If your parents both have Bb then there's a 25% chance you got bb.

There's primarily 2 genes that affect colour, let's call them A and B.

AB would be brown, Ab/AB would be brown, aB would be green and ab would be blue. They're called Herc2 and Gey I think. there's a bunch of others that affect it a bit, but it's primarily those. My parents both have brown eyes, yet my sister has blue eyes. I have grandparents on both sides that have blue yes though, which explains the recessiveness of it.

ITT: We act like mendelian genetics always apply, and we apply them wrong.

Because fuck looking shit up in google, or god forbid, a genetics book.

The only thing more dangerous than half knowledge is some fucking sophomore running around thinking he knows Shit
>>
>>8010751
What other explaination is there ? Non dissociation that gives two genes by one parent and 0 by the other ? Mutation ?

Nothing wrong with applying Mendelian models to Mendelian traits.
>>
>>8010773
>>8010798

This>>8010709 applies to you.

Its amusing how people predicates as facts the baby-tier simplifications made for children who ask question with a somewhat complicated answer.

>>8010798
Come on son, k̶i̶l̶l̶ apply yourself
>>
From the paper quoted by>>8010709
> Eye color is not an example of a simple genetic trait, and blue eyes are not determined by a recessive allele at one gene. Instead, eye color is determined by variation at several different genes and the interactions between them, and this makes it possible for two blue-eyed parents to have brown-eyed children.

>>8010798
In human even apriori simple looking trait such as eye color or hair color height etc do not follow the the mandelian trait pattern; usually recombination may complicate the matter
>>
>>8010773
Non dissociation ? Does OP sound like he have some sort of trisomy?
Some guys link to to a verry nice papper explaining how intricate traits in humans can be, I suggest you read it ;
A mutation could be possible but highly unlikely
>>
>>8010843
haven't read the paper, but if eye color is a more complicated genetic trait, why does it appear to be a Mandellian trait? By that I mean, at a superficial level, it seems to be a trait that would be carried by one or two genes, based on how it expresses itself. Is there an explanation for how the dynamics of those several genes expressing themselves can be so contsrained?
>>
Do a punnet square, guy.

A=Brown.
a=Blue.

Mummy=Aa
Daddy=Aa.

AA=Brown (25% chance).
Aa=Brown (50% chance).
aa=Blue (25%).

Congratulations, you had a 1 in 4 chance of inheriting two blue eye alleles. This is oversimplifying it, but the moral of the story is that your dad probably wasn't cucked and you are not a Lannister bastard.
>>
>>8010851

First think of what eye colour really is. If you dont know, look it up.
Then read the damned paper.
Wa-la, questions answered.

You are gonna have trouble in your academic life if you cant follow those steps.

And fucks sake neverever spout incorrect shit without knowing, please.

>>8010873

At least bother to read the thread man

>>8010849
trisomy can be prevented if non dissociation happens in both parents and one parent gives 2 chromosomes while the other gives 0

What.
I am certain they are my biological parents, aside from blood type there's a strong family resemblance to my mother's whole family, and I have my dad's hair, excessive sweating and very distinctive body odor.

time to face reality, OP

your "dad" got cucked by a blue eyed man

>Can't answer what is apparently a basic question when asked
>tells others their academic life is going to go poorly

Pointing to a paper is not asking a question. Pointing to a paper is either an admission of ignorance (inability to simply state the conclusions for a layman) or an admission of being an asshole. Both are bad for your academic life.
>>
>>8010546
Even stupider is the fact hazel eyes can turn blue or brown or green. Jesus christ did no one realize hazel eyes are a thing?

btw what you are thinking about is the laws that allowed for divorce awhile back before people realized genetics doesn't work like that.

>>
>>8011338
OK you homo, ill take the big boy spoon and feed you with simple terms.

Eye color varies with the melanin (different forms/substances if i recall correctly) amount and distribution in the iris.

This seems to depend mainly on two genes, whose name i dont recall but im sure you can find on your own. There are also other genes (about 10 or 15 i dont remember) which seem to be correlated. I think most of them are located in the chromosome 15.

The phenotype depends not only in the aleles the individual posseses, but also in how those interact. (It is not as simple as absolute dominant and absolute recessive, im sure you can look it up, too.)

Finally, pointing to a paper it is an answer, if the answer is written in it. And admission of ignorance is a vital point of learning.
I admit everything i said is better explained and detailed in published papers. Not doing so is an admission of being a major asshole.

You owe me 5 minutes of my life
>>
>>8011435
>pointing to a paper it is an answer, if the answer is written in it

A paper is written to target specialists, not laymen. Thus, when addressing a general population of non-specialists, you are being an asshole by pointing to a paper [or, again, admitting that you do not understand the paper sufficiently to explain it to a layman and are just trying to sound superior, which brings us back to being an asshole].
>>
>>8011452
Calling someone an asshole while being so lazy that you refuse to look up the meaning of simple terminology requires some fucking nerve.

I dont expect the general population to be non-specialists when they state (mostly incorrect) shit as specialists. But i should have known better.

If you have any doubt, please ask. I studied the subject a couple of years ago but i still remember a grosso modo. I can even take my old notes from the closet they are in just to help you with any doubt or big scary word.
>>
>>8011477
I have next to no interest in this matter. I just like the extreme language and defenses you put up for pointing non-specialists at a paper that you (or someone else) took the time to look for when they could have simply stated the conclusions, as you have already demonstrated.

>I dont expect the general population to be non-specialists when they state (mostly incorrect) shit as specialists.

Eye color is often presented as a classical Mendelian trait in the courses non-specialists take. Thus, it is not unreasonable for the general population to assume it is such, especially when it is presented as such by (supposed) specialists.

[I say supposed specialists because whoever is teaching the intro bio course could very well not have a clue about the genetics of eye color beyond the simplification they are presenting]
>>
>>8011496
I always found unreasonable how people just swallows what they are told. Do as you fucking please my man.

As for the """""""""""xtreme"""" language, mate, you made me mad af. Seriously, im used to talk to people who look for answers by themselves before trusting someone elses knowledge.

see ya around
>>
>>8011514
>I always found unreasonable how people just swallows what they are told.

I do not expect you to understand papers in my field because you have presumably spent your time gaining expertise in your own field. Specialization exists for a reason, anon.
>>
>>8011520
The paper i posted required 5mins of research.
Anyone interested could have understood it np.

As for papers in your field, you made me curious, post something.

And sage please, it seems it is just you and me shitting in this thread
>>
>>8011523
>The paper i posted required 5mins of research.
Ahh, I see. I did not actually look at the paper, if I am going to be honest (see: "I have next to no interest in this"), but looking at it quickly, it seems targeted at nonspecialists. Sorry for giving you shit.

Anyways, I will give a sample of similar complexity and another actual paper.

This is the best I could find that was relatively non-technical, not Wikipedia and not a press release.
