Also

>Not having an in depth knowledge of the subject matter before you went to college.

Normal but selective universities that have good programs and great social life are probably the best for practicality. No point in going to an elite school if no one knows what it is or if you can't make any friends there.

An easy guide for this is basically to find good schools with top-tier sports programs or active greek life.

Think:

>UPenn
>Duke
>Berkeley
>UMichigan
>Northwestern
>Vanderbilt
>Notre Dame
>Georgetown
>UCLA
>USC

Basically, if you're not going to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, or Stanford, no one will really know or care how good your school is past the threshold of "good school" so you might as well go to the listed above and make the most out of college.

I redid the entire list here:>>8003662

Below are a list of schools that have very strong programs that are outside of Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Princeton, Columbia, MIT, etc. Order doesn't matter here.

University of California—Berkeley
University of California—Los Angeles
University of Virginia
University of Michigan—Ann Arbor
University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill
Georgia Institute of Technology
University of California—San Diego
University of Wisconsin—Madison
Pennsylvania State University—University Park
University of Washington
University of Texas--Austin

Vanderbilt University
Northwestern
University of Notre Dame
University of Chicago
Duke
University of Pennsylvania
California Institute of Technology
Carnegie Mellon University
University of Southern California
>>
>>8004132

I agree with this list. There are a couple other regional ones but these are all fine.

It's interesting to compare what /sci/ sees as a good school and what schools are considered target schools for banks.

Northwestern checking in.

I may add Rice to the list.

Just an educated guess or observation,

Back in the old days universities were seen as a place to learn abstract liberal arts. But "land grant" universities were endowed to teach practical things like engineering, sciences, etc.

Usually within a State you'll find the more traditional liberal arts university and the STEM ones. This doesn't mean the former universities lack STEM programs (sometimes they are some of the top STEM programs in the nation), but it'll be more obvious which of the two schools is the engineering or STEM one.

Due to this you sometimes have: University of [State] -- at XXX because one school will be the more liberal arts one (traditionally) and the other will be your more traditional STEM one. I noticed that a lot of STEM ones follow the name of "The [State] University" while your liberal arts one is "University of [State]" but that isn't always the case...

Anyway, TL;DR universities have different purposes and since they all exist in the same state they may overlap with names.

btw this could be entirely wrong just my guess

true GOAT coming through

Things discovered by cambridge:

>Calculus
>Gravity
>Evolution
>DNA
>The Computer
>The Electron
>The Neutron
>Cloning
>IVF
>Hydrogen
>Laws of Thermodynamics
>The scientific method
>Electromagnetic theory

The list goes on and on. What has your university contributed to science?
>>
>>8004598

Cambridge did not, by itself, contribute all of these things. Cambridge was a collaborator on many of these projects. Cambridge deserves credit for doing so (as do other collaborating universities), but don't be a cunt about it.
>>
>>8004609

I think most Ivies have CS departments ranked lower than CS departments at non-Ivies. (I'm another person from an Ivy, by the way.)
>>

Indeed, that's very subjective. The question deserves a detailed post about mathematical education in France and the whole culture around the Grandes Écoles, it's a unique system that performs badly by most worldwide rankings criterias because of the very limited number of students in the top schools and many other factors. If you want I can write a more detailed post.

Bread and butter. This is where you should thrive to go to MIT, Harvard, etc. Universities should be paying you to get your PhD there. Even if they don't, it is still worth getting it at those schools.

>>
>>8004470
Hey dumbass, you can get certifications proving you're qualified, even from Harvard and MIT now. You can volunteer to develop for projects like Blender or Firefox, you can get work online programming for individual people. If you wanna be a sysadmin you can host servers for people to play videogames on, and charge them for it. There's tons of ways to get experience thanks to the internet.

You don't need to go to college to be a programmer. You need to go to college to be on the cutting edge of Comp Sci in an ACADEMIC setting.
>>
>>8003663
I want to design and/or help work on making computer chips. I'm going to college for computer engineering. Should I get certs instead? If so, which ones?

Duke exist in the same state as UNC. It isn't a secret that UNC is comparable to Duke (eg they are both ranked the same in CS), but at a cheaper (in state) price. Something like 60k compared to 20k. I think UNC is something like 50k out of state so more comparable OOT. UNC Is also a top 5 public school, so no it doesn't overshadow every school in the state. Plus, even though Duke has a better name it's engineering department is ranked similarity or the same as NC State's which has a strong in state program.

Not involved in this, but wouldn't it make more sense to look at those who were schooled in France vs. those schooled in the US? If someone has earned all of their degrees in one country, it makes more sense to count them as a winner in said country as opposed to one they were born in.

Just saying. It may not even matter.
