I dont think she was chosen from a large testing pool to be taught to speak or be educated. She was smart enough to take Mr. Roger's shoes off when he came to visit her after she watched the show everyday. She was in a great mood days after his visit, so theres some higher cognitive function there.
However, shes an annecdote. More gorillas like her should be produced, we dont know if koko is hugely above average from other gorillas or even if shes below average when it comes to cognitive ability.
