It's probably the easiest to understand to the majority population. The average joe probably doesn't understand gene flow, genetic drift, or geographical isolation.

Well, the fact is that the first world got to where it is by extracting value from the indigenous populations of the areas they colonised.
This disparity of wealth has then obviously been handed down to the modern day, so some in the first world feel guilty that they live (comparatively) incredibly well on the handed-down wealth taken from the ancestors of those living in what is now the third world, which is a shithole mainly BECAUSE of the processes by which its value was extracted.
Some people just take that a bit too far and make these dramatic gestures, which I'm sure eases their consciences but doesn't really solve the problem.
The other extreme is to just declare 'vae victis' and say that if they didn't want their value taken they should have fought harder for it, but that's a little heartless for a start and ignores the fact that aiding the developing world is better for the developed world too in the long run.

There's nothing new there to find, and any primitive group that did live there and didn't assimilate is now surrounded by the modern world, making a true primitive way of life very difficult.
Sub-Saharan Africa, or the Amazon, or Polynesia were only explored by advanced society fairly reticently due to their remoteness. Since these areas tend to be at low latitudes their inhabitants tend to be high in melanin.
