Balding is one of the best examples of how evolution really works. Evolution does not select for beneficial traits, it selects against harmful traits. And evolution is an extremely blunt instrument. There are only two outcomes with any trait; either it causes you to die or become sterile or it doesn't.

Baldness provides no advantage, and indeed is quite annoying, but it doesn't kill you or render you incapable of breeding. So it keeps getting passed on forever.
>>
>>7981650
>>7981731
A better way to say it is that evolution selects for sustainable traits.

Most reptiles have a fairly small brain to body size ratio when compared with mammals. More brains are better right and reptiles are older than mammals, so why don't reptiles have larger brains?

Because the price isn't worth the gain. Anatomy is expensive. If you want to be bigger, faster, stronger, smarter, then you will often require more calories. What's the point of having a race car when all you do commute for 15 minutes to work each day in bumper to bumper traffic?

Baldness persists because the drawback is incredibly minor.

If a bacterium doesn't have the ability to breakdown a certain protein, that's a relatively detrimental trait to survival compared to other bacteria if the protein is numerous enough
If a bacterium does have the ability, that means it has a relatively beneficial trait

Man, I had a friend who talked for years about how weird it is that no creature ever evolved wheels.
We tried to reason with him how there really where no roads in the past and that any 'wheel-rats' should've just start evolving during the last few centuries.
Another school of though meant that there is no way to bring nutrition to keep the bio-wheel healthy while spinning free.
It essentially need some way to dock with the host during rest, it's also very hard to dream up useful intermediate stages for a bio-wheel propulsion system.

It helps women identify beta males and alpha males and act accordingly:

Bald Beta males = bad genes but good providing capability, women will extract resources (beta bux) from bald beta to provide for offspring of genetically-superior alpha

Non-balding Alpha males = genetically superior, women want to get impregnated (alpha fux) by superior genes in order for maximum gene transmission (sexy sons hypothesis)

>How does it help us?
Yet another one of these "what's the evolutionary advantage of bullshit!?!1one1" threads?

It doesn't help us:
- How does atopic skin help us?
- How does type 1 diabetes help us?
- How does lactose intolerance or celiac disease help us?
- How does bad breath help us?
- How do small boobs help women?
- How does cancer help us? (about as common as baldness)

Human beings are flawed. We live way beyond what nature originally intended us to. We're filled with mistakes, problems, issues, and minor nuisances, every single damn one of us.

What does it take to ram it through your heads that evolution isn't something that happens by design? It's not just a scientific alternative to religions or other children's stories of intelligent design, it's something completely different. Mutations are random, but within that randomness, the traits that have an actual positive impact on a species' survival tend to survive and propagate, while those that have a negative impact tend to die off. And everything inbetween just randomly tags along and tends to survive. But it's an ongoing process.

So whatever happens to us after mid 20's has very little to do with evolution, since throughout most of our - and our genetic ancestors' - existence, our lives haven't been longer than that.
>>
>>7983755
It's literally that ugliest type
>>
>>7988356
>- How do small boobs help women?
Less strain on the back, lower chance for breast cancer, more attractive to men with higher income to name a few (source for the last one: https://www.staff.ncl.ac.uk/m.j.tovee/Swami-JScEc-2008.pdf, or just google it, there's a lot more studies)

Also, just because it is not immediately visible, doesn't mean there's a benefit, for example there exists a gene variationthat causes men to be born deaf, yet at the same time improves wound healing

If there is no benefit, then the gene variation will die out slowly over time, but if there the benefits are "good enough" compared to the downsides, it will survive

Any wide-spread gene variation at least has some benefits, otherwise it wouldn't be wide-spread
>>
>>7981650
Are you trying to imply that every genetic mutation has to help us?

Because that's not how it works

Balding is a work-in-progress for natural selection. It's basically just a error/dysfunction that happens when humans grow older because the human species is not perfect.

Also, we rushed evolution and stopped here where we are now, so I don't think it's going to get much better.

The thing is that people generally reproduce before they show signs of balding, so having more hair after reproduction is irrelevant to whether you have already reproduced or not. It's similar to why cancer is not selected against, because generally cancer doesn't develop until you are older, long after you have reproduced.

JUST
>>
>>7981650

balding probably hasn't played much of a role before modern times given that it hasn't really been that big of a factor in sexual selection as men have generally procreated before balding in their rather short lifespans

Humans females are the only mammals to have full breasts when not actively nursing offspring
All female monkeys and apes walk on all fours, when a female is in estrus (fertile and ready to breed) their sex organs engorge and become bright red, this is the signal to males
Most female mammals are only fertile at certain time of the year so this signaling is important for reproduction
When humans began walking upright this signal was no longer readily visible, when a human female becomes fertile, which is nearly a permanent state, unlike apes, facial lips swell, as do cheeks, breasts also swell, giving males visual clues
No other mammal gives birth to young that are as helpless as humans, a female needed a partner to help with food and protection, a female with permanently swollen lips, breasts and a large backside kept males interested even when she was not fertile and caused them to stay close and help her, so they would have opportunities to mate and reproduce
That's why a swollen ass, large breasts and big lips evoke a predictable response in most normal men
