How similar is studying statistics compared to studying mathematics? I doubt I could handle a complete mathematics degree (or at least well with decent grades) but statistics looks somewhat fun.
What I'm especially concerned about is about the emphasis on mathematical proofs.

Statistics is applied math. I suppose it varies on the individual institution, but in my UG classes we did proofs in class to show that something worked (more importantly for intuition WHY it worked) and then actual out of class work was typically doing statistics. Studying to do statistics isn't too bad, studying to understand statistics can be hard because it gets VERY intuitive.

Idk how it is in other schools but you have the option of taking lots of stats classes as a math major for your math electives. So with either major you could pick up a minor in the other.
You'll have to learn to program in R or SAS for many statistics classes.
